I'll be visiting Ireland for a week during August 17 -August 25, this summer, with my 17.5 yr. old son and would like to know about folk-type music events, open stages, song circles, etc. Well be landing in Dublin and tourng about by auto. We are Canadian with an Irish last name. Any thoughts from friendly folks from all parts of the island?

Any trip I've ever taken over the years, I've missed big festivals by a day or two...grrrr...However, we've been to West Clare on several occasions & there are wonderful traditional music seisuns in the pubs of Doolin, not far from the lovely Cliffs of Moher. In Dublin, especially on a Sunday morning, go to O'donohue's pub. They have a front & back room- one has musicians, the other ballad singers. Do try to get to the west...its enchanting. The 2 pubs in particular in Doolin are O'connors & McGann's. We prefer McGann's. have a lovely trip! I've heard in mid-february all the musicians gather in Doolin- informally. An acquaintance goes every year. He used to work at McGann's, so knows the 'craic.'

Hi

If you go to the filter box.. and put in "Ireland" and set the age to 6 months... you'll find a heap of threads.... but here's one to get you starte Ireland this summer

I'm biased (about the North) being from Belfast... but it's hard to beat the Antirm coast.... just head to Larne North of Belfast and keep heading North up the coast, when you get to the top.. turn left and head right across to Donegal, then West down the West Coast of Ireland.....

more beautiful scenery than you can shake a stick at.....

I arrive home the week after you leave...

If calling past Larne on a Saturday make sure you call in on 'Mattie Moores' pub. It has a great session and does good food. Check out http://www.geocities.com/snogtherock/matties.html

Don't miss the coast to the South of Dublin, if you can't make it over to the gaeltech or elsewhere in the West... The pub I enjoyed the most in Dublin itself was Molly Malone, right by the statue of herself with her wheelbarrow. I know it sounds corny but the band (The Ragamuffins) was great, the grub was good, and the Powers was excellent...

1.If its music your after (and if you don't want to miss the festivals by a day or two..) try to get a copy of the "Irish Music Magazine" (the May- issue) or go to their site: You can see ALL the festivals, workshops, and other music events (or other CULTURAL events, for that matter). 2.If you are touring and like to hear (or like to sing with) the locals, don't expect to much of the city's. The villages around them are often better and not aimed at tourists. 3.Remember that every part of Ireland has its own music: Two weeks ago we stayed in Killarney and ofcourse you find a lot of polka's there. So every part has its own. TIP: If you are in the neighborhood of Knocknagree (Kerry/Cork) on fridaynight....go there, and have the time af your life. They are even friendly to tourists!!!

Lots of fun,

Rob

we went to Doolin last year The sunsets over the sea and the aran islands are breathtaking ( go up to the tower for the best view ) Over the two weeks we were based there McDermotts pub ,opp. Mcganns was the friendliest, good music and food. The only thing that spoilt several nights were some ill mannered visitors who would stand between the musicians and their audience and talk very loudly! Eager visitors were given guest spots to perform their pieces. One wonderful singer from New Zealand was particularly memorable as were some enthusiastic Austrians. Say hello to Ted if he is still singing there...
