Subject: RE: Jean Pierre Rampal Passes From: Mbo Date: 22 May 00 - 08:26 PM Whoa, how did I miss this! What a shame, young guy too. I remember listening to his albums when I was on my insane Classical habit when I was 16. His performace of "Irlandaise" from Claude Bolling's Suite for Flute and jazz Piano is stunning...one of the things that led me into Celtic music back before I knew I would be here today. Bonjour, mon frere. |

Subject: RE: Jean Pierre Rampal Passes From: black walnut Date: 22 May 00 - 01:05 PM I was a flute major at university. Rampal was certainly one of the performers I listened to the most. 'A class act', as Rick would say.... ~black walnut |

Subject: RE: Jean Pierre Rampal Passes From: BDenz Date: 21 May 00 - 06:00 PM He will be sorely missed. Anyone who is a classically trained flute player and can say "I don't play a flaut and am a flutist" and play with the Muppets as well as transform a couple of generations of calssical flute players is ok in my book. Subject: RE: Jean Pierre Rampal Passes From: Rosebrook Date: 21 May 00 - 04:47 PM Thank you for starting this thread BlueJay. Rampal's work had a significant influence on my musical development when I was a teenager. He was the ultimate epitome of perfection in flute performance. A flute teacher encouraged me to listen to great flute playing as a way to improve my own, and Rampal was the performer I listened to. And now my daughter is fascinated with his work, also. He is truly one of the greats. Also with a tear in my eye, Rose I did a quick search at amazon in the classical store for Rampal and not surprisingly there are 115 items listed.

Subject: OBIT: Jean Pierre Rampal Passes From: BlueJay Date: 21 May 00 - 03:40 PM I haven't seen any threads, so I could not let this pass. Jean-Pierre Rampal, the master of the flute died yesterday, age 78. He played everything from Barouque to jazz to traditional folk songs, with a passion and expressiveness that very few accomplish on ANY instrument. He was largely responsible for the renewed popularity of the flute, especially as a solo instrument. My grown flute playing daughter was influenced by his music at a young age. I have always been astonished by his playing, and I'm not really that much into classical music. But Rampal was the consummate musician. IMHO, Galway et al have never even come close. The world has lost a true musical legend, the kind that only comes around once every couple of hundred years. So, flute players of any kind, be it pennywhistle, recorder or ocarina: play him a tune today. I'm sure he'd love to hear it, and it sure can't hurt your playing abilities to play a tunein honor of Jean-PierreRampal. I may even try one on the guitar. With a tear in my eye, BlueJay |
