I would love to get the lyrics (and cords, if someone's got 'em) to a lovely, lilting love song called "If Ever You Were Mine"--a Scots tune, I think--that I have heard, but not very often. The usual sources have turned up dry. One rendition of it can be found on the Narada label, on a collection called Celtic Legacy, performed there as an instrumental on guitar, piano, and fiddle. Please, please, please? Does it go by another name?

There is a thread here that contains this link to the lyrics. There is also some discussion in this thread.

    If Ever You Were Mine

    Tune - Maurice Lennon

    Lyrics by Jim Smith

I long to see you once again
Just to feel the warmth of your smile
To hear you laugh just one more time
The way we'd laugh if ever you were mine

    Chorus
    But you'll n'er be mine
    That just cannot be
And the smiles that you smile
    Are for another, not me.

    The sadness I'll feel
For the rest of all time
    Is the sadness of knowing
    If ever you were mine

    Words - Silver Donald Cameron,
of d'Escousse, for his wife Lulu

If you were mine one hour,
I'd be the proudest one you'd see
If you were mine one hour,
    How glad I'd be
If you were mine for just one hour,
Of all the hours of all my days
If you were mine one hour,
That hour would be the flame in me.

If you were mine one day,
I'd be the happiest one you'd see
If you were mine one day,
    In love with me
If you were mine for just one day,
Of all the long days of all my years
If you were mine one day,
That day would be a life to me.

If you were mine for a life
I'd be the humblest one you'd see
    I'd offer thanks
    For the wonder given me
And you've been mine through all the years
Through all the struggles, joys and tears
We've had a love, my sweet,
As deep, as constant as the sea.

This song is found on Scott MacMillan's Minnie Sessions Volume 1 recording.

HEre are a couple of other threads which touched on the tune

Thread about Natalie MacMaster
Thread on Celtic Waltzes

Enjoy them.

As for chords, sorry. I don't play any instruments, and have only heard it as a fiddle tune. Scott MacMillan plays it on his Minnie Sessions #1, on his guitar. He or Dave MacIsaac would know it. I believe Dave played it on Natalie's recording of it. The version that Natalie did is really neat since it has solos of each of them, Dave and Tracey as well as Natalie!

I DID find these:

Natalie MacMaster's version in RealAudio
Scott MacMillan's version in RealAudio
ABC of If Ever You Were Mine

Still no chords or MIDI files of it.

Another nice recording is by the great uillian piper from New york, Jerry O'Sullivan. I think it's on an album called "The Invasion". We used to play it alot in sessions in the DC area.
You could try these chords
each chord being a 1-2-3

G,em,C,C / G, em, D, D,
em, C, G, C / G, G, D, G

G, em, C, D, / G, em, C, D
em, C, G, C, / G, G, D, G

Great tune!, I could write out the tune if you want.

I just realized, and you probably know this, that there is an extra bar at the end of each time through each part. Which is just an extra 3 count on the G chord for both A and B parts.

Hi.. Guess this is a pretty old thread, but, Matticus, if that offer to write out the tune still stands, I would really appreciate it! I play the whistle, and know just bits of this tune; I've been dying to learn the rest. Thanks!

Many thanks for all the nice comments.I wrote "If Ever You Were Mine" when I was smitten back in 1978,just a few months before we formed the band Stockton's Wing.I've never recorded it myself but it's lovely to hear others enjoy it.I'm doing a solo fiddle and viola album at present and I think I may have this tune in the bag ,as they say in the music business!!! Maurice Lennon.

We've played this beautiful tune for many years (and always credited you, Maurice) It's one of the most commented on we do - on pipes and guitar.

At a gig in Bonar Bridge we had to play it six times!

Best of luck with the album - let us know when it's done.
If you're ever in Burnley.....
