Well! I we swung by ECU on the way out, and I had JUST given up when my sister flagged down a car with 2 guys with beards, as I described! We hung around together for maybe a half hour! Allan & Bill played some awesome songs on 12-string, and Bill fired up the accordion--and he gave me a RULIN' Mudcat button with me name on it! I didn't have much time, but I did play a few tunes. I played Rosbif Waltz on Bill's Mudcat Guitar, and I sang Feels So Near, and Fields of Athenry acapella, to make the ECU oaks to ringing! Ah...Thanks to the guys, I have some new songs to check out on the DT. It was great! Wish we could've stayed longer, but it was fun! Carry on guys, to the next 'Catter!

Well ... I'm all ready for the "boys" ... house is clean; marketing is done; beds are made and ready. I thought they might drive thru tonight ... but now I'm hoping they stop and come in tomorrow morning ... it's a 10 hour haul from Raleigh to Tallahassee ... and they're going to be tired puppies.

I'll post when they arrive ... moonchild

Bill - I wasn't at the Jug last week, but it seems the next St. Gobain contingent were in for their "induction"! I believe many songs were sung. Wish I'd stirred me stumps and gone. I don't know how accurate the headcount was, but I heard around 30 young French people were in!

C'mon Bill, let's have a report from you!

Mbo ... Thanks for the update ... I didn't check back in after my last post, but I was pretty sure they would stop, but I slept on the couch, just in case. Depending on what time they leave/left Savannah ... it's about a 6-hour drive to Tallahassee ... so I'm expecting them noonish.

Arose very early to peel peaches and cut-up cantaloupe (both local!) and peel and clean the shrimp. I was able to get huge shrimp but with the heads still on. Shrimp with heads look like big bugs!!!!! Also, got some grouper that they kindly filleted for me.

So ... whenever they arrive ... I'm ready.

'Spaw ... if you hop in your car right now ... you can be here for supper ... we'll set a place.

Allan, if you are near a computer and checking into this, be sure to leave Casper early enough in the morning that you have enough time in daylight to appreciate the spectacular views and wildlife of the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It's about 350 miles from Casper to Mammoth Hot Springs in the Park (Yellowstone, we just refer to as "the Park"). There is usually a herd of elk hanging around in Mammoth, which is near Gardiner, MT, the northern entrance where you will meet Wayne. At least the days are long this time of year.

Allan's plan is to "check-in" to mudcat while here ... so he'll be able to touch base with the next few legs of their journey ... wish I was going with them to Montana and Wyoming ... I also don't eat organs or entrails or anything slimy or anything made with blood, g-d forbid ... And, if someone tells me to "try it ... it's an acquired taste," my antennae go up about 6 inches.

Don't suck the heads on crawdads either do you Moon? Most of the shellfish things I've been able to do and enjoy, but that "Cajun crawdad head suckin' thing" was not my cup of tea. But tell the boys as they go through New Orleans to give it a try. Bill will have a "one-up" (possibly a "one-down") on the Jug gang!!

Jenny, hitch a ride and come on out! We don't have shrimp like yours, but I am sure you could find some Rocky Mountain oysters, though not at my house.*BG*

I am thinking we will also try to do at least a couple of tunes on HearMe, the night of the 10th, if everyone is willing and able. I'll be sure to post a thread early if we do decide to do that.

This is great! Just incredible! We are having the time of our lives! (Then again, we always are aren't we? Think about that...)

Both Bill and I are renouned for our navagational abilities. However, the past two days (when not meeting 'Catters) have been spent getting UN-lost! It has been comical. On the good side of that, we have gotten to see parts of the south we had not scheduled to see. Yesterday we got the car washed by rains which were driven by winds associated with something the weather service never quite called a tornado. We were not on the road at the time. So we were able to sit back and watch the entire storm as it drove the rain horizontally to the ground.

This brings up another thought. No, we were not able to locate a proper Plastic Jesus for the trip. We have instead a Folk Troll who peers out at the world from the driver's side of the car. He is a lovely beast and has brought us good fortune at each of our stops.

Ah-h-h the stops!

The Espresso Corner gig was quite an event. My girlfriend, Kathy, had created a wonderful poster of which I had made copies and had spread all over town. Zillions of folks at the college had promised to come. Guess what. About thirty all told - only one of which was from the college. I was a little bummed out. But it was a great crowd anyway.

Moonchild tell me that dinner is ready. I must go. More later.

I just realized that I forgot to tell you that this is me, Allan C., on moonchild's 'puter.

It was a pleasure to meet Mrr as a Mudcatter! I have known her for nearly seven years and have always known that she had a long-term interest in folk music. I had spoken with her about the Mudcat two summers ago. Nothing could have been more surprising than to discover that she had finally found the Mudcat. She has a good knowledge of Irish songs and quite a few other types as well. It was lovely to hear her sing.

BeauDangles has a permanant smile built into his face. I had spoken on the phone with him early last week. But it was still a wonderful surprise to see him in person. I had encouraged him to bring his flute to the E-Corner. And I am so very glad he did so. He is marvelously talented! He knew a huge number of songs that Bill also knew. I did my best to keep up. I was actually very happy to find that I could actually do so at times.

The end result was more of a jam than a performance. But the audience was both attentive and appreciative. Well, sorta. We got a total of five bucks in our gig jar!

Before we left the gig, we had the 'Catters sign one of the guitars we have. We plan to have each Mudcatter sign it as we travel along. So, if we visit you, please be sure to do so, okay?

I had met Dani at the 1999 Getaway. She has lovely rosey cheeks and a beautiful smile which tells the world about what a happy, cheerful person she is. She seems to love to surround herself with music. She has a cute little store at which she sells some hard-to-get food items. It was a pleasure to get a peek at where she spends her time when she is not at home with her two beautiful children and her "friendly giant" husband.

I hadn't seen BarbaraLynn in about thirty years. It was as if she was still standing on the porch of her house near the highschool we both attended. She has hardly changed. She and Bill and BarbaraLynn's husband, Casey sat and talked until the small hours of Friday night. Then Saturday morning, we shared a few songs. BarbaraLynn has a song she wrote about the atrocities of Custer and his troops that brought me to tears.

Unfortunately we got a late start in getting away from BarbaraLynn's and so we barely caught Mbo and his sister, Cbo, who were just about to give up on us. Mbo, BTW, is not as tall as Bill thought he was. Mbo was a lot quieter than either of us expected. He and his sister were wonderful to meet and we truly enjoyed hearing the songs Mbo shared with us in our brief time together. Mbo has a fine voice which is even better in person!

Bill and moonchild have just started playing a bit of music together so I think I'll go join in.

This is so much fun!

Allan C.

OK, Allan - I just wrote you an Email, so some of this may be repetitious, but I am not sure if you're getting your Email so ....

I spoke to my club owner friend, Keith at the Celtic Crossing in Shreveport. He was hopeful that you'd stop by. He said the Wed night jams have been great, and well attended. I know you'd love the place, and there are some great pickers/singers there. You gotta meet my friend, Sonny! He's a great player, and has a true joy for music. He is a real treat to play with, and a lotta fun to be around. I had an offer to put you up, while you're there, so if you're interested, please let me know (I put instructions in the Email). These are great folks; they take great care of us when we travel out there. At any rate; I told 'em Wed May 31 was the target date (the last date you gave me).

Also - in Dallas, I have warned my friends at the Sons of Hermann Hall to be on the look out for you. This is a world famous jam, at a world famous club (Robert Johnson played there, and some of the best in folks, blues and swing still play there). But it has a real homey feel to the place. There are all levels of players/writers there, and frequently multiple jams going in different rooms (although it's apt to be kinda slow this time of year with holidays and Kerrville Festival). Anyway - they start around 8PM. Look up directions on thehere, and then find my friend Ranger Randall. You'll enjoy it!

I am really sorry we're going to miss each other. My wife and I will be headed to Virginia while you're in Texas - but I know you'll enjoy the trip!

... This should open the album I created -- select the Friends album, and you should find 3 photos of Allan and Bill.

URL address to go to is:

Now I hit "submit" and see if this works!

Hi,
This is Allan C. again on MC's account. We are just about to head out to look for gaters and then begin our drive to New Orleans where we will hook up with my daughter, Kelly. It may take us a while to catch one of those gaters, so we may not get to N.O. before sundown.

Far too many wonderful things have happened here at moonchild's place for me to share in this brief moment. I will say, though, that she has shown Bill and me the highest form of Southern hospitality. We had the opportunity yesterday to make some music with MC and Harpgirl at moonchild's father's home and had a wonderful time doing so as we sat in the shade of the pecan tree and ate our honest-ta-God southern barbeque and watermelon and strawberry shortcake and the list goes on!

I'll try to post some more when we get farther down the road.

Having more fun than you could possibly imagine but we'll try to share what we can with you. We wish you could all be with us!

Allan C.

Note to Praise: We will be passing right through there after we leave a brief visit with Don Meixner. Let us know where we might meet you and we will do what we can to see you.

Note to Jed: Thanks. We will try to do both.

Note to ALL: I have no way of checking my email while on the trip. If it isn't posted here in the thread, I won't see it.

Hi, Allan, it sounds like a whirlwind, and you sound energized. If you can still get here on a Sunday (June 11, I think you were aiming for) we have our Sunday night session in the old hotel reinstalled in the lobby. The remodelling is finished, so we are back where the musicians have been gathering every Sunday evening since 1994. It would be great to have you there to participate. Les might be able to meet you in Gardiner.

From: GUEST,moonchild @ work

Well ... this morning I saw two old and dear friends off for the next leg of their journey ... I was sad and elated, both at once. Sad ... because they were leaving; elated ... because we had a wonderful time together.

I waited for them all day Sunday and was just about to call out the troops when they arrived about 8 PM. They had taken a tour through Savannah and made a right turn, instead of left, at "Florida", so they managed to see a bit more of South Georgia than planned.

They looked tired, hungry, and thirsty. So, while they fixed a cuppa, I readied the grill and started dinner. We had grilled Gulf shrimp and grouper fillets, local sliced beefsteak tomatoes and deviled eggs and just ate and chatted until we were stuffed. We played some music and played cath-up from the past few months.

Allan and I woke about the same time Monday AM, so I made coffee and we took it out on the patio to enjoy the slight cool breeze and listen to the cacophony of birds.

I cooked an authentic southern breakfast ... eggs, grits, redeye gravy, country ham, buttermilk biscuits, and fig preserves. Bill, who doesn't eat breakfast, ate like it was his last meal. (Allan likes every meal!)

Then we gathered myriad instruments and straw hats and headed northeast to Monticello, Florida, (a small, sleepy southern town of about 5,000) and my father's farm. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Daddy invited all the neighbors and then some ... with a promise of good food, good music, and good people.

We set up food tables, chairs, and stools underneath the 100-year-old pecan trees. Surrounding us were the garden; muscadine grape arbor; plum, orange, and fig trees. There was East Carolina minced barbecue, barbecue chicken, green beans, baked beans, potato salad, boiled potatoes and onions, and various other side dishes. Earlier that morning, Daddy had picked a couple of fresh watermelons. Lots of iced tea. Bill played a stirring, slow rendition of "Dixie," on the melodeon, to start the feast.

We started the music almost immediately and the crowd started gathering. harpgirl joined us a while later, with her son. The music was so damn good! We had 2,3, and 4-part harmonies going and some really good counterpoint harmony (actually my and harpgirl's speciality!). The dogs (Prince, Jack Russell Terrier, and Blackie, Cocker Spaniel) joined in to harmonize, as well.

When one of the neighbors, an Irish lady with a delightful lilt in her voice) requested Wild Rover ... we all looked at each other and broke into a rollicking version, with much audience participation ... Allan and I on guitar, harpgirl on autoharp, and Bill on melodeon. There were several veterans in attendance (my father was General Eisenhower's personal radioman at Omaha Beach) and Bill sang a couple of songs that brought tears ... then silent reverence.

All-in-all, it was a beautiful day in the deep south. This was Memorial Day as depicted by Norman Rockwell ...

We returned home late ... all three of us kind of caught up in the happenings of the day. Bill and Daddy are already talking about what they will do when Bill and Lorna visit me in January. My father gave both Bill and Allan a blanket invitation to any family gathering from now until ... These are the only two men I've ever brought "home" that my father liked ... which probably means they are probably the "safest" men I've every brought home!

So, for me, it's back to the work-a-day corporate world ... but I have wonderful memories ... and look forward to the next time we "get together."

2 requests: One, come cook for me, please, moonchild! I'll make you some authentic Hungarian food in exchange!
And the other, can anyone do a blicky and start a new thread for this, this one is getting awfully long and already I can only read it at work, where I have the faster Internet connection...? Thanks!

Dear Allan & Bill:
I sent my address & directions via email, but it was after you left on your journey. I hate to clutter up the 'kat with personal directions, but since that is your only active line of communications, here goes:

Our address is 522 South Country Club Road, Ada 74820 Ph: 580 436-2468. From Hwy 3 (4 lane divided as it approaches Ada) turn of to the right on Hwy 3 Business (I think), Cradduck Road. After approx 0.4 mi turn right (North) on Stadium Drive. Go 0.5 mi N to 18th (4-way stop sign). Turn right (E) on 18th past a 4-way stop sign at Scenic Drive and continue to Country Club Rd (Stop sign for CCR, but not for 18th)(total of 0.4 mi). Turn left (N) on CCR and go two short blocks. Our house is a red brick on the NE corner of CCR and 16th. We have a driveway off both 16th and CCR. Park in the driveway off CCR.
Arrive as early as you can on Sat. We will chat & make some music and have lunch, then leave for OCTMA around 4:00pm. MC's sounded great, I wish I could have been there.

This was a memorable event in early Mudcat history - way back in the year 2000. Allan Clark send me a photo today of himself and Bill Sables at "Big Red" Lighthouse in Holland, Michigan. I thought I ought to share it.
Clickety-click.
