Roger the Skiffler has just been preening himself for being nominated for the originator of the worst thread ever. I don't think he'd be in with a chance - It was a pretty good thread, I'm afraid. But it set me thinking, we could try and get nominations.

And then I thought, that's bit negative. So how about nominations for the best threads? With links. Obviously Spancil Hill is in there, but there are probably lots of ones that have slipped out of memory. And which predate the arrival of many of us on the Mudcat. So older tye better, as is only right and proper for a folk-oriented community.

Oh, all right, nominations for worst might be fun too - but they should be the kind of worst that are enjoyable to mull over, rather than just real worst, which would be boring and flat. "Outrageous" might be the better word, really.

Damn, and I though "fame at last". How transient it was, sob,I even fail at being worst!
Of the story parody threads I think Leej, Peter T and others' Blake Morrison thread was masterly, glad to see it revived(but then I read a lot of "thick-ear" P.I. fiction).

For "Worst," I would nominate any thread that goes over about 50 postings. I think there should be an automatic cutoff at 50, and those who still want to post can start a second thread on the same subject. Those that get that long are generally not strictly folk music related anyway. The time it takes to download the really long threads is annoying and generally disappointing when after waiting and scrolling the new addition is something like "Right on."

What seems generally recognised as one of the best ever thread "Where is Spancil Hill" comes to something like 106 posts, so I don't think that nomination really stands up. (That's not to say that it's not a good idea to restart threads once they get a bit too long to load conveniently - anyone can do that already.)

The FAQ now has a section about classic Mudcat threads, so my suggestion above is a bit redundant now.

Is this a trap to make me download 106 posts only to find out there is no place called Spancil Hill. Or at least there is a place called Spancil without a hill in sight but rhymed better with an illusory hill?

Is that a different Roger? Try it anyway.

My favorites have been the ones that uncovered the history and origins of a song, namely Where Is Spancil Hill, and Carrickfergus. Those are the two that top my Mudcat list because it was not just a simple post of lyrics or links or a debate about something, but a progressive revelation, so to speak.

I think my least favorite is "Why are guitars SEXY and banjos not." The only reason I say that is because it keeps appearing on my damned screen. We're up to 148 posts now. I'm not really concerned about the download time; I just don't want to read 148 posts on the same subject.

My favorite is "My bodhran is too thight." It not only taught people about bodhran maintenance, it also allowed 'Spaw to launch yet another product idea.
