Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 15 - 10:10 PM long ago a belle and beau with hearts in tune Met and danced, became entranced and parted soon. Though the dance was over when the music waned That was oh,so long ago, but love remained. Lovers often hum this soft and sweet refrain Even after love and laughter cease to reign. It recalls a night when hearts were unrestrained. With the dawn the night had gone, but love remained. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 06 Apr 14 - 02:17 PM Words from the Scribner Radio Music Library, 1931. Copy this into a word-processing program and remove the returns at the end of the lines, and you would have words and chords lined up. A slash shows you where the rhymes are. The word before the clash lasts 6 beats. Bear in mind that there will be some dissonance, esp on the third beat of a measure. That's one of the characteristics of the waltz. Let it tingle rather than clash. This is in G, 3/4 time. G Words are D vain when G music's D strain says "Love G me D do!"/When Swift Bm feet cry D as they Bm fleet, "Love, G I D love G you!"/ C Hands each D other G press- Em ing, Am with each D clasp re- B new/ D vows that G say "Dear love, for C ay, I'll love D you G true."/ |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: GUEST,ckoh rhode island Date: 03 Mar 12 - 08:09 AM remember all but one hazy lines. hear sweet music softly playing i love you,may from your heart come those words i love you too. tenderly hands pressing fondest vows renew, saying once again 'my love,ah,i love you'. and (in a daze we ?) dance, our hearts would fain entranced. our hearts no more repine but seem to murmur 'oh,be mine'.and yet gliding silently, no words are said twixt you and me, my fond heart speaks those words 'l love but thee alone'. (refrain : the first four lines) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: Alice Date: 10 Jun 00 - 04:37 PM As I mentioned earlier, the original lyrics to the opera are in German, and there are translations of the opera into English and other languages.
The music is beautiful, so it is no wonder there are many popular versions sung to the tune. I just found another verse in an old book called Treasure Chest of Old Time Song Hits. If you put all the offerings together in these two Mudcat threads, you can come up with several workable verses.
This isn't the opera version, but variations of what people probably sang around a parlor piano. Alice |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: Alice Date: 26 May 00 - 03:55 PM Here is an even more complete description of the plot, as well as a list of the song titles in English (my favorite is Vilia, but Maxim's is funny). The Merry Widow -click here This is from an MGM page on the film version that starred Jeanette MacDonald. This is really a great comedy to watch. I saw a video of a Met production, and it was wonderful. Alice |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Merry Widow Waltz From: Alice Date: 26 May 00 - 03:49 PM If you read the rest of that thread, you will see my message that The Merry Widow is an operetta by Franz Lehar. The lyrics are in German, the story is set in France. There are productions done in English speaking countries (videos available) that are performed in English translations. There are probably lots of different English versions set to the tune.

Subject: The Merry Widow Waltz From: GUEST,BeauDangles Date: 26 May 00 - 02:32 PM Hey I have some more impressions from last nights meeting with Allan & Bill, which I shall post later to the appropriate thread. Meanwhile, my Mom has asked me for the lyrics to the Merry Widow Waltz...has anybody out there heard of this? It is from a musical of the same name. Possibly a ballet? I'd sure appreciate any help. Thanks, BeauD |
