Hey I have some more impressions from last nights meeting with Allan & Bill, which I shall post later to the appropriate thread. Meanwhile, my Mom has asked me for the lyrics to the Merry Widow Waltz...has anybody out there heard of this? It is from a musical of the same name. Possibly a ballet? I'd sure appreciate any help.

The sheet music is at the Levy Collection, Box 171 Item 098. It's from an opera by Franz Lehar, a good crossword puzzle name/word.

If you read the rest of that thread, you will see my message that The Merry Widow is an operetta by Franz Lehar. The lyrics are in German, the story is set in France. There are productions done in English speaking countries (videos available) that are performed in English translations. There are probably lots of different English versions set to the tune.

The Merry Widow -click here This is from an MGM page on the film version that starred Jeanette MacDonald. This is really a great comedy to watch. I saw a video of a Met production, and it was wonderful.

As I mentioned earlier, the original lyrics to the opera are in German, and there are translations of the opera into English and other languages.

The music is beautiful, so it is no wonder there are many popular versions sung to the tune. I just found another verse in an old book called Treasure Chest of Old Time Song Hits. If you put all the offerings together in these two Mudcat threads, you can come up with several workable verses.
While we're waltzing whisper softly, "I love you",
Let your sweet lips sound the echo, "I love you",
Keep the night for dancing, dear one do not sigh,
We will meet again someday, til then, goodbye.

This isn't the opera version, but variations of what people probably sang around a parlor piano.

Copy this into a word-processing program and remove the returns at the end of the lines, and you would have words and chords lined up. A slash shows you where the rhymes are. The word before the clash lasts 6 beats.

Bear in mind that there will be some dissonance, esp on the third beat of a measure. That's one of the characteristics of the waltz. Let it tingle rather than clash.
