Hi, JP, my dad still sings this one frequently. If noone else has the lyrics in a day or so, I'll call him over the weekend and get them for you.

You might also try looking at some of the sites in the Links on the menu bar up top and maybe at some of the ones listed at this site.

Thanks,

kat

Thanks Katman. I couldn't find it on the link you gave me, so if you can get it from your dad, it would be most helpful. Thanks again! Jim

Sure thing, Jim, only it's kat*woman*laughing. No prob! Sometimes it's hard to tell in cyberspace. I'll call my dad on Sunday and, as long as he is home, I'll get them. If not, it might be Monday. Glad to help.

Here is one verse I remember:

I've heard Hawiians play in the land of the Wiki Waki But I must say I like "Turkey in the Straw" by Cracky

That is all I remember.

My Mom had it as:

I love mountain music,
Good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band.

I've heard Hawaiians play
In the land of the Wicki-Wacki,
But I must say:
They can't beat "Turkey in the Straw," by cracky!

I love mountain music, etc...

That's all I can remember, too.

Sandy

And that is what my dad sings, too, Sandy, with a slight variation:

I like mountain music,
Good ole mountain music
played by a real hill billy band
I like what rural rhythym
rural and get right with them
I think the mountain tunes are grand

I heard Hawaiians play in the land of the Wiki Waki
I can say it can't beat turkeys in the straw by crackee

repeat first part

Sorry it took so long, JM.

Dad will be calling into the radio program in a week or two to chat and sing a couple of songs, if you're interested in hearing him. I'll be sure to post a note so folks will know when and you can always catch it in teh archives, too.

Thanks,

kat

Good show, Kat. I suspected there was a bit Mom missed, or that I missed in my memory of what Mom sang. Thanks, lass! Give my best regards and thanks to your dad.

Oh, Sandy! Thanks, I will, but you are so kind not to point out my mistakes! That's what I get for being too impatient! Here's what the missing bit should say:

I like rural rhythm
Rural and get right with them,
I think the mountain tunes are grand

On the "by crackee" part, Dad's got a neat way of singing it up high and almost in a *cackley* way that, of course to me, sounds just right!

Thanks, Sandydarlin', nice ta see ya, luv.

From: Stewie

Roy Acuff's 1956 recording for Decca [De30141] is slightly different. It is credited to James Cavanaugh and Frank Weldon:

To the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee
Came a hula girl from over the sea
With sparkling eyes, lips so red
She looked at me and then she said

I like mountain music,
Good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band,
Give me rural rhythm,
Let me sway right with 'em ,
I think the melodies are grand
I have heard Hawaiians play in the land of the wicki wacki
But I must say, you can't beat 'Turkey in the straw' by cracky
I like mountain music,
Good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band

Instrumental break

Her flashy clothes are really neat
Flowing hair and dancing feet
When she does the hula she, can drive you wild
Swingin' and swayin' in the mountain style

Instrumental break

While the fiddles play and the guitars ring
The people laugh, you can hear them sing
This hula girl can swing and sway
You can hear her shout to the break of day

I like mountain music,
Good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band,
Give me rural rhythm,
Let me sway right with 'em ,
I think the melodies are grand
I have heard Hawaiians play in the land of the wicki wacki
But I must say, you can't beat 'Turkey in the straw' by cracky
I like mountain music,
Good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band

Sorry for missing the line break in the chorus. There should be a new line with 'But'. I also had a novel spelling of 'hear' the 'fiddles' stanza.

My truncated memory of this song is:

I love country music
Good old country music
Played by a real hill-billy band.

I love rural rhythm
Let me play right with 'em
I think their melody is grand.

I've heard Hawaiians play
In the land of the wicky-wacky
Still I say, "You can't beat 'Turkey
in the straw' by cracky

I love country music
Good old country music
Played by a real hill-billy band.

I would love to have more info on this
I know the music to it.

We were taught to sing this song at the "Victorian Banjo Club" (Aus.)in 1956. The words were as Stewie gives them and were no doubt straight from the Roy Acuff record. I doubt there is much more to it than the information Stewie gives. Cheers, Joy

Funny to see this surface. I used to sing this as a kid. I think The Hoosier Hot Shots had a hit with this. I have it by Roy Acuff, too.

You can tell who has distinguished taste in this joint.

Oh, I would like to know the tune for the verse. I remember hearing this on the radio. Can't remember the verse at all. Maybe I can find someone who knows it. Thank you Stewie and everyone for the words.

They didn't teach us the verse, but it probably doesn't matter much. You could just sort of chant it Rita. Problem is how am I ever going to get it out of my head!! Especially the "Turkey in the Straw by cracky" bit. I really like the way that rolls off your tongue. Cheers, Joy

Hello everyone, I have many copies of the lyrics for this tune (I Like Mountain Music - 1936), but am really looking for a mp3, midi or sheet music of it, as I would like to play it for my seniors group. Thank you.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the old hilarious Bugs Bunny episode "Hillbilly Hare" from 1950. That's where I originally heard this song -- just a bit of the chorus.

There was also a 1933 Warner Brothers b&w cartoon called I Like Mountain Music that featured the song (or part of it).

The story took place in a magazine shop after-hours. Characters (real and fictitious) came to life from the periodicals, some musical numbers were performed, and the whole thing ended with a big chase.

YouTube was very productive for this one.

From the '30s:
Billy Cotton and his band
Henry Hall and his BBC Dance Orchestra
a merry melodies cartoon

And this piano version by Allen Dale led me to search for Del Wood and the title.

On the google search was this site where I found this:

I LIKE MOUNTAIN MUSIC
(Frank Weldon / James Cavanaugh)

Hoosier Hot Shots - 1936
Roy Acuff - 1956
Also recorded by:
Don Reno; Jimmy Martin; Jim Hendricks; Ray Budzilek.

1. When the sun goes down and the chores are through,
There ain't nothin' better I like to do
Than sit around the house when the folks ain't home
And listen to the music on a gramophone.

CHORUS: I like mountain music, good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band.
Give me rural rhythm; let me sway right with 'em.
I think the melodies are grand.
I have heard Hawaiians play
In the land of the wicki-wacki,
But I must say
You can't beat "Turkey in the straw," by cracky!
I like mountain music, good old mountain music,
Played by a real hillbilly band.

2. To the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee
Came a hula girl from over the sea.
With sparkling eyes, lips so red,
She looked at me and then she said: CHORUS

(Instrumental break)

3. Her flashy clothes are really neat,
Flowing hair and dancing feet.
When she does the hula, she can drive you wild
Swingin' and swayin' in the mountain style. CHORUS

(Instrumental break)

4. While the fiddles play and the guitars ring,
The people laugh; you can hear them sing.
This hula girl can swing and sway.
You can hear her shout to the break of day: CHORUS

I am so happy I found these results to my search for the lyrics to this song. I have been searching my BRAIN for them with no results.
My great Grand Children were visiting last week and I wanted so much to sing it to them .I know the tune but forgot the words. We as children used to sing it in the car as we traveled, until my Mom and Dad cried "enough please" That was 85 yrs. ago.
