Subject: Cape Town Hedgehog Pie #2 on the folk polls
From: GUEST,radio presenter /author Shiloh Noone
Date: 23 Oct 11 - 08:35 AM

To all those folk seaworthy maties in the cold North

The vote came from the listeners, pipped by Mandy Mortons & the Spriguns, a worthy contender. Largely because of Doonan's flute and and Jenkins ' fiddle, the Pie is largeley an unknown group to Capetonians who fell in love with their sound. (A few zealous indivuduals even arrived at the studio with the LP in their hands)
I put it down to all the ex pats and Brit colonials that settled in the Cape of Goodhope in the late 18 century. You will still hear Fairport and Steeleye Span in the pubs in the southern suburbs

Saw the original Hedgehog Pie at the Turks Head in Lincoln and booked the DB version for a gig at Hull Uni just after they'd formed.

Tony Capstick was the best of that group seventies of folk/comedians by a long way. When he sang a "straight" song I would put him up against anyone. On the flip side I also remember getting seriously pissed with him on my eighteenth birthday (again at the Turks Head). Given what happened later I still a bit guilty about it.

If you can find it the Gaughan/Capstick/Burland LP of Ewan MacColl songs is well worth a listen.

Steve

Working with Tony was fine: as I recall, we'd hit the pub after a day in Impulse Studios
(where the engineer, Mick Sweeney, had to communicate via a security camera!), but despite Tony's later rep as something of a wild card, he was good to work with and we all laughed quite a lot.

He was possibly the most edgy and brilliant of that set of 'folk comedians', and a fine singer and player too.

Dave Burland's written a song for Tony, which we may well include in the new set.

The Doonan Family Band. Wonderful.

Saw them at Cleethorpes Folk festival about 4 years ago. So talented.
They did one song that impressed me so much. They did a Labi Siffri song and all the audience joined in and it was so moving and awesome.

There was only one hedgehog pie my friend! (well, different line ups of the same).Just been listening to a poor quality copy of ,'just act normal'(1978)- cracking stuff. Pity this line up was short lived and as far as I know only recorded this one album. It should be re-released for all to hear. Did anyone ever see them?

How many hedgehog pies were there? I am sure there was a band in Stroud with that name - I will enquire on Jan 15 when there is a free ceilidh and the musician I think would know will be present.

Really good band from those days back when.

I saw them in the Merseyside area in the mid seventies. But where???

Amazingly picked up a copy of 'Green Lady' in the Lake District last August. Vinyl not in great condition but the cover looks to have been signed by all the band on the individual photos inside the gatefold as follows

Enjoy it???? Stu Luckley

Michael Doonan

Love Margi x

Scuse the underwear Jed Grimes

Lots of luv Martin Jenkins

Lots of Dik

Could it be authentic??????

Folkypaul - I also saw Hedgehog Pie at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt in 1975 and spoke to Michael Doonan at the bar during the interval, a great gig, on the strength of that I bought the first Hedgehog Pie album.

BanjoRay - I actually spoke again (over 30 years later) to Michael Doonan at a gig they were doing in Wakefield last Saturday night. He is still playing but he is now with a band called the Solicitors who are a soul based band, but he still plays folk with his band the Doonan Family and tour quite frequently. I took my album along to show him, he was gobsmacked when he saw it and how much he'd changed (sadly the dark long curly hair and beard have gone) but he was such a lovely man and we had a really good chat.

The only drummer the Pie ever had
One album, The Green Lady, one E.P The Lambton Worm
And one single, Well I know why I love you
Brilliant band topped The Folk Proms at the Albert Hall
And Toured with John Martyn on the University circuit
Best gig, Possibly The July Wakes festival at Chorley Lancs

I'm pretty sure I have a recording of "Lowlands of Holland" by Hedgehog Pie, recorded live when they played in Coventry (several times). That was the line-up feat Dave Burland, Mick Doonan and Jed Grimes. Late 70s I think. Don't ask for a copy though, as I have no idea where it is lurking at the moment.

We also did a concert with Hedgehog Pie AND Five Hand Reel on the same bill! That was a great night.

I remember seeing Hedgehog Pie in Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt a lot of years ago now.
Age makes me forget how many.
I was at the bar having a drink with the old man(John Doonan)and I asked him what he thought of young Mick's playing.
He thought a bit and said "He could be better than me.   But don't tell him I said that".
I never did.

Hi

I saw Hedgehog Pie a few times in the 70's. Excellent, especially at the Chorley Folk Festival (75 I think) with Steeley Span, Mike Harding, Gallagher & Lyle, Barbera Dickson, ... saw many of them just jamming in the bar ... terrific. My Green Lady vinyl wore out a long time ago so very keen to get the live CD. Interested to hear if any of the old band are doing any Yorkshire Folk Clubs in 2008?

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Someone copied me two albums - one self titled and one called The Green Lady and an e.p. called the Lambton Worm from the vinyl (seeing as they've never got onto CD). There's some really good stuff on there, but I know virtually nothing about them and a Google search doesn't seem to bring much up. Sounds from the posts above like they were more of a big gang of musicians than a band!

I did their folk club in Hebburn a long ,long time ago, when there were (it seems)well over a dozen of them. Every one of them was a better singer and musician than I was !!!so enough said about THAT night.
Fabulous people - all of them including ( bless him Mick's Dad - John Doonan).
If you ever want to recreate the powerful ambiance get along to see the Doonan Family whenever and wherever you can. Good that someone also mentioned Phil Murray who also plays with the Doonans - an unequaled acoustic bass player with the Doonans along with Stu Luckley, Mick's brothers - and if you're lucky - you'll get their Irish dancers to complete a more-than memorable occasion.

Nicole, Full Circle appears to be available here BUT the tracklist says Lowlands Away, which I know as a different song from Lowlands of Holland. I don't have the disc to verify my suspicion that this is not what you are looking for.

Swan Arcade did record Lowlands of Holland on their LP Matchless, and that track fits your description, but I don't know if it ever reached CD.

Dave Burland recorded LoH on his CD Benchmark, but that is quite a spare, reflective, solo treatment. Nice, but not the one you are after.

I hope this may help, I was surprised to find I have no less than 8 recordings of this song, like Nicole I really like the Swan Arcade version, the Waterson:Carthy one is also rather good.

Hello Mr Rabbit.
Re The H.Pie Live release.
The Tracks listed from "Gander in the Pratie Hole" to "Dancing The Baby" (Inclusive) are from a BBC In Concert recorded in the Concert Hall at Broadcasting House.
In exactly the same order!!
Must have been an "Off-Air" recording, and I'm pretty sure the original tapes no longer exist.
The In Concert series was produced out of Birmingham, and that department (Folk On Two) were disbanded many years ago, when Smooth Ops took over the programme. Indeed the building "Pebble Mill" is also no more!
Hope this helps...
And, Yes, they were a fine band, in whatever incarnation.
Ralphie

I once heard the song "The Lowlands of Holland" and thought it was by Swan Arcade. I can't find it so now I think it was by Hedgehog Pie (with Dave Burland). It was sung by a man and a woman and had a wonderfull folk-violin in it. Can someone help me?

I have an album from 1974 called "Hedgehog Pie". Its on Rubber Records rub009. The lineup was Margi Luckley, Stu Luckley, Jed Grimes, Michael Doonan and Martin Jenkins. The tracks were:
The Reverend Johnson and The Big Kerry
Mariners
Rosemary Lane
The March of the King of Laois
New York Trader
O'Rourke's Flogging Chair
Fishing Song
Jack Orion
Spalpeen's Lament
They were a terrific band who could fill our folk club with no trouble at all. Their lineup changed every time we saw them, and was sometimes very big. The guy in our Doncaster club who first found them did a gig in Newcastle and said "I got up and did a set then the audience got up and did a set!".
They had a superb singer called Mick "Domino" and a cracking acoustic base guitar player called Phil. If anyone knows what's happened to these guys nowadays, I'd like to know - in fact one of them's still got my sleeping bag!
Cheers
