I've been puzzled looking for this song. I came across it in a novel by the great maritime and nature writer, Patrick O' Brian. In his novel, The Fortunes of War, there is a throwaway reference to it when a character fleeing through the streets of Boston during the 1812 war hears "a man singing 'Oh, Oh, the Mourning Dove' as though his heart would break". O' Brian had fine taste in music - his novels are littered with references to songs, ballads and symphonies alike - and most of the references are traceable. I cannot, however find any reference to this song. It must be American as we have no mourning doves in Europe, but I can find no trace of it on the Web. Has anyone ever heard of it? Tks & rgds, Simon Turmaine

'Oh, oh, the mourning dove
Says, where can she be?
She was my only love
But gone from me, oh gone from me.'

Other than the single quotation from Book 6, p.156, I cannot locate anything further. However, I'll look more.

I've been resisting the Oh oh oh to touch and feel ... mnemonic. I just gave in.

Patrick Tull does a good job of singing this in the audiobook.
