Subject: Rock-a-bye baby by Charlie Magee
From: GUEST,tony_o'kelly@bcit.ca

When I lived in Ireland I heard the song Rock-a-bye baby sung by Charlie Magee on the Walton's programme on RTE. I am trying to find the words to the song. When I visited Waltons they didn't have the record or the lyrics. Some of the words are: "...his head is just splitting, he said it's the flu, but that's not the real reason between me and you..." Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Tony,

My mum used to sing it sometimes, (and my dad didn't drink at all).
Here's what I remember, hope you can get the rest.

CHORUS: Rock-a-bye, baby, so warm in your nest.
Your poor daddy's not well, and he must have a rest.
His head is just splitting. He says it's the 'flu,
But that's not the real reason between me and you.

He went out on Monday to buy you some shoes,
But he heard of a gee-gee that just couldn't lose.
The money bought new shoes, to that I can vow,
But the book-maker's daughter is wearing them now. CHORUS

He went out on Tuesday, he hadn't a bob*,
But he met Billy Murphy, who'd got a new job.
They went celebratin', a jar here and there,
He blames the bad whisky, but why should we care? CHORUS

He went out on Wednesday, in the late afternoon,
And he happened to pass by a billiard saloon.
The balls ran against him, I'm sorry to say,
And that's one of the reasons he's not feeling gay. CHORUS

That's all I've got, and while it is close, it may not be exactly accurate.

*For those unacquainted with the slang, a 'bob' was a shilling. "He hadn't a bob" means he was completely broke.

BETWEEN ME AND YOU
(Traditional English/Irish 20th Century)

Lulu Belle & Scotty - 1976
Joe & Antoinette Mckenna - 1984
Delia Bell & Bill Grant (with the Kiamichi Mountain Boys) - 1988
Geoff Grainger - 1998

Rock-a-bye Baby, so warm in your nest
Your poor Da-da's not well and he must have a rest
His head is just splittin', he says it's the flu
But it's not the real reason, between me and you

He went out on Monday to buy us some shoes
And he heard of a horse now that just couldn't lose
Well, he bought the new shoes, that I can vow
For the Bookmaker's daughter is wearing them now

Rock-a-bye Baby, so warm in your nest
Your poor Da-da's not well and he must have a rest
His head is just splittin', he says it's the flu
But it's not the real reason, between me and you

He went out on Wednesday, in the late afternoon
And he happened to pass by a billiard saloon
The balls ran against him, I'm sorry to say
And that's one of the reasons he's not feeling gay

Rock-a-bye Baby, so warm in your nest
Your poor Da-da's not well and he must have a rest
His head is just splittin', he says it's the flu
But it's not the real reason, between me and you

He went out last night and he hadn't a bob
But he met Tommy Carty who'd got a new job
They went celebratin', just a pint here and there
And he sears he was poisoned, and I'm sure we don't care

Rock-a-bye Baby, so warm in your nest
Your poor Da-da's not well and he must have a rest
His head is just splittin', he says it's the flu
But it's not the real reason, between me and you

Thanks Peace,
Those are pretty much the verses I had, but I'd assumed there were more. No wonder I could't find them!

Here's a verse I wrote when I played on Tuesday nights at O'Flaherty's in the French Quarter of New Orleans, as the Dart League was playing on the other side of the room:

He went out on Tuesday for some strawberry tarts
And stopped by the pub for a wee game of darts
He said he'd be back before the sun set,
Now it's going on sunrise and he isn't home yet.

I thought Leo Maguire, presenter of the Walton's programme wrote this. I know he did copyright it
