I don't know who sings it but there is a Scottish song that goes....

none so neat, none so sweet, none so fair none sae bonnie
Mairi o' the witchin' eyes my own my darling Mairi.

For years I struggled to get rid of idols in my life by using strategies and schemes, or promising to try harder. None of that worked. My idols lose their power over me only when I taste that Jesus is sweeter than anything they have to offer. As Dr. Tim Keller has reminded me, my idols will always ask me to die for them, but they will never die for me. Only when I see that Jesus died for me can I turn away from idols and towards him.

When by faith my Lord I see
Bleeding on a cross fro me
Quick my idols all depart
Jesus gets and fills my heart

Chorus:
None among the sons of men
None among the heavenly train
Can with Jesus then compare
None so sweet, none so fair

Soon my tongue would fain express
All His love and loveliness
But I lisp and falter forth
Broken words, not half his worth

Oh I try and try again
Still my efforts are in vain
And I know despite my pride
That his truth will still remain

Idols crowd my heart and mind
And demand I shed my blood
But the Lord, the risen Christ
Has secured me in the flood
Has secured me in the flood

The word Mairi I'm learning today, is, it seems, the Scottish form of Mary. Whatever the case, I was merely trying to recall a song that my father used to sing, in the hopes of remembering his often beautiful, and much cherished presence. The only words I can recall of his singing are "none so sweet, none so fair, none so Bonny".

Are you thinking of Mairi's Wedding? If so, Google it and there are about a half million versions on the www. At least twice that on Youtube.
