Subject: Lyr Add: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: Jim Dixon Date: 30 Mar 03 - 10:36 PM I can't believe this has never been posted at Mudcat before! Lyrics copied from http://www.coquetshack.com/lyrics/Lyrics_P/Pilgrim_0242.htm THE PILGRIM (CHAPTER 33) (Kris Kristofferson, © Resaca Music Publishing Co. 1971.) See him wasted on the sidewalk in his jacket and his jeans, Wearing yesterday's misfortunes like a smile. Once he had a future full of money, love, and dreams, Which he spent like they was going out of style. And he keeps right on a-changing for the better or the worse, Searching for a shrine he's never found, Never knowing if believing is a blessing or a curse, Or if the going up was worth the coming down. CHORUS: He's a poet, and he's a picker. He's a prophet, and he's a pusher. He's a pilgrim and a preacher, And a problem when he's stoned. He's a walking contradiction, Partly truth and partly fiction, Taking ev'ry wrong direction On his lonely way back home. He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars, And he's traded in tomorrow for today. Running from his devils, Lord, and reaching for the stars, Losing all he loved along the way. But if this world keeps right on turning, for the better or the worse, And all he ever gets is older and around. From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the hearse, The going up was worth the coming down. CHORUS An' there's a lotta wrong directions on that lonely way back home [Recorded by Kris Kristofferson on "Cisco Pike", 1971, and on several subsequent albums. Also recorded by Willie Nelson and Teresa Brewer.] |

You're absolutely right jim it's worthy being posted here. greetings from germany |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: Dave'sWife Date: 11 May 07 - 10:41 PM Incidnetally, there is now a wonderful tribute CD of Kris Kristofferson songs called 'The Pilgrim - A Celebration of Kris Kristofferson. It has some truly beautiful and memorable covers. You can get it on iTunes for $9.99 Right now I'm listening to Willy Nelson's cover of 'The Legend' which has just rolled over into a great version by Kris of his own song 'Please don't let the story end' - a wonderfully weary but sentimental song if ever there was one. Another remarkbale song is Patty Griffin's cover of 'Sandinista'. it only took another 25 years for the Sandinista revolution to have some kind of peaceful resolution after the right-wing reaction to it. It makes the lyrics that much more poignant. I was pleasently surprised by gretchen Wilson's version of 'Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down' - she's more than just a redneck marketing scheme afterall. Who knew? Certainly not I. One more good cover to mention - Russel Crowe's respectable cover of 'Darby's Castle'. It's a great song and he does it well. You don't often here this one anymore. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: oldhippie Date: 12 May 07 - 01:01 PM Agreed, another song that goes well with Silver Tongued Devil and Pilgrim Chapter 33 is "The Saints Who Have Never Been Caught" (Larry Jon Wilson/Sojourner LP). |

Subject: Lyr Add: MAYBE YOU HEARD and DARBY'S CASTLE From: Dave'sWife Date: 18 May 07 - 10:04 AM The tribute album has Pilgrim Chapter 33 on it covered by Emmylou Harris. It's a terrific song and never gets old. Whenever I hear it, I can think of a new person in my life that it describes to a "T" My current favorite song from the tribute CD is 'Maybe Your Heard' which is sung by Todd Snider. The lyrics are some of Kristofferson's biting best - it's about people who turn away from friends and family when they're on their way down, or more likely an exhortation to get the listner to not to turn away. The lyrics are wonderful but as with all kristofferson songs, the melody makes them even better: MAYBE YOU HEARD by Kris Kristofferson Verse 1 Maybe youve heard, your ole buddys gone crazy Searching for words, too deep, sweet reason and rhyme Living alone, more and more and hes prone to be lazy Turning to stone, blasted and blind. Chorus: Dont turn away there, hey, goddamn you, he was your brother Turn on your father, sister, mother, brother He was your friend. Dont you condemn him, leave it to strangers You ought to know him, give him a hand, if you can But at least for jesus christs sake, understand him. Verse 2 Maybe youve heard that they say that the ladys been changing Day after day, more than her mind Learning to play, where the part has her turning to strangers Going too far, line after line. Chorus: Dont turn away there - hey - goddamn you, you used to love her Turn on your father, sister, mother, mister She was your friend. Dont you condemn her, leave it to strangers You ought to know her, give her a hand, if you can But at least for jesus christs sake, understand her. The rest of the CD is pretty great but it has some bad missteps such as the failed R&B version of 'Me & Bobby McGee' by Brian Mcknight and the unoriginal cover of 'Why Me' by Shawn Camp. 'Why Me' was so perfect in its original form that covering it as a direct copy of KK's style is always a bad risk. It works well live, but why record it if you aren't going to do something special with it like say, for example, Johnny' Cash's sparse cover it towards the end of his life. Here are the lyrics for Darby's Castle which I mentioned in an above post: DARBY'S CASTLE by Kris Kristofferson Verse 1 See the ruin on the hill, where the smoke is hanging still, Like an echo of an age long forgotten. There's a story of a home, crushed beneath those blackened stones, And the roof that fell before the beams were rotten. Cecil Darby loved his wife, and he laboured all his life, To provide her with material possessions. And he built for her a home of the finest wood and stone. And the building soon became his sole obsession. Chorus Oh, it took three-hundred days, for the timbers to be raised, And the silhouette was seen for miles around. And the gables reached as high as the eagles in the sky, But it only took one night to bring it down, When Darby's castle tumbled to the ground. Verse 2 Though they shared a common bed, there was precious little said, In the moments that were set aside for sleepin'. For his busy dreams were filled with the rooms he'd yet to build, And he never heard young Helen Darby weeping. Then one night he heard a sound, as he laid his pencil down, And he traced it to her door and turned the handle. And the pale light of the moon through the window of the room, Split the shadows where two bodies lay entangled. Chorus Oh, it took three-hundred days, for the timbers to be raised, And the silhouette was seen for miles around. And the gables reached as high as the eagles in the sky, But it only took one night to bring it down, When Darby's castle tumbled to the ground. Another really beautiful melody is the one for his song 'The Circle' which is covered by Columbian folk singer Marta Gomez. I wish I could find the lyrics so I can figure out if the song is about The Disappeared or some other horrible tragedy. Anyone have the lyrics or the backstory to that song? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: Dave'sWife Date: 18 May 07 - 10:09 AM Aha, I found this statement about the song 'The Circle': >>> ...four new songs, such as "The Circle," written after two significant events, the story of the disappeared ones (los Olvidados) in Argentina and the late Iraqi artist Layla Al-Attar, who was killed during the Clinton administration's bombing of Baghdad--the pilots missed the target. Al-Attar..<<< So I was half right. The lyrics do mention Los Olvidados. I just didn't know about Layla Al-Attar. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: GUEST Date: 10 Jun 07 - 03:37 PM It's not the lyrics that I desire, it's the oratory intro when KK is talking about who he wrote the song about. Anybody knows those words, I'd be greatful. Beemer |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Pilgrim (Chapter 33) (Kris Kristofferson) From: frogprince Date: 10 Jun 07 - 04:57 PM Beener, here's the intro from the Silver Tongued Devil album: "Ah started writtin' this song about Chris Gantry...ended up writtin' about Dennis Hopper, 'n' Johnny Cash, 'n' Norman Norbert, Funky Donny Fritz, Dudley Swan, Bobby Neworth, Jerry Jeff Walker 'n' Paul Segal...Ramblin' Jack Elliot had a lot to do with it." |
