Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Highwayman From: GUEST,Mbo_at_ECU Date: 11 Jun 00 - 06:57 PM Yeah, "The Highwaymen" that Bedlam was looking for is the one Gene posted. It was sung by The Highwaymen, who were Willy Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash (the theif, the sailor, the dam-builder, and the starship pilot respectively in the song & the video) on the album "The Highwaymen". They also do excellent versions of "The Last Cowboy Song" and "Desperados Waiting For a Train" on the album as well. --Mbo |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Highwayman From: GUEST,Gene Shay Date: 12 Jun 00 - 08:32 PM Phil Ochs took a famous poem---the epic ballad, The Highwayman, and wrote a melody for the narrative The way Phil did it, he took out some verses and re-wrote a bit so that it would work with his tune. Phil recorded it in the 60s. Years later others would be attracted to Phil's version. Katy Moffatt, and Steve Gillette (on a Phil Ochs tribute album I produced--What's That I Hear? The Songs Of Phil Ochs--Sliced Bread Records. Recently, Canadian singer-harper, Loreena McKennitt took the same poem and set it to her own tune. A beautiful perfomance and using more of the original poem than Phil's edited version. Let's not confuse that with Jimmy Webb's great song, The Highwayman, which was recorded by Willie and Waylon, Kris and Cash. This is a whole different Highwayman--but one hell of a great song. I love em all. |
