This particular song, (Im My Own Grand-Pa) has been recorded by many people across the globe. In Australia (and still available) an entertainer (singing comedian) Chad Morgan - also known as The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, recorded this song during the 1970's, and again in the 1980's, he still performs the song at his live shows around the country, and it is a funny song. To know more about this funny many you can read up about him via http://chadmorgan.cjb.com

One of the best recordings I've heard is by Grandpa Jones Another good one is by Spike Jones and his City slickers. Just a coincidence that they're both Jones too, so don't blame me!

Joe Stafford, not so unlikely as it sounds. Was this in her days with Red Ingle and the Unnatural Seven where she used the name Cinderella G Stump ???

Hi! I just saw Ferrara's email about Plaisir d'Amour.... Francis Luzzatto was my dad and we sang that song as children all the time. I'd love to hear from you... marisaluzzatto@hotmail.com

Thank you,

Brings to mind the last confederate widow, who just passed away, and she actually did marry her husband's grandson--not nearly as complicated as the song--but to the same effect--

Probably Jo Stafford, as unlikely as that sounds.

Whoops, one tiny change that I just remembered. Totally not important but ... this phrase was one I really liked at the time (about 8 years old?).

I think I got the words from the DT and amended them, and bit by bit the original wording that I heard is coming back to me.

She sang, "FOR though he is my husband he is my grandfather, too."

Wish I knew who sang it.

Subject: Lyr Add: I'M MY OWN GRANDMA
From: Ferrara

Funny. I sang this on July 1 at an Open Sing. We had a 78rpm of a woman singing it. The singer could have been Judy Canova, but I think it was Esmeralda, and the flip side was probably "Hooo-eee, Ain't Nature Grand!".... Here's how she sung it, more or less....

I'M MY OWN GRANDMA

    It sounds funny, I know,
    But it really is so,
    Oh, I'm my own grandma.

1 Now many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widower who fell in love with me.
My hubby had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red,
My father fell in love with her, and soon they too were wed.

Chorus    I'm my own grandma.
    I'm my own grandma.
    It sounds funny, I know,
    But it really is so,
    Oh, I'm my own grandpa.

2 This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life,
For my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the mother of a bouncing baby boy. (Chorus)

3 My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
To my husband's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother. (Chorus)

4   Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son.
My hubby is my mother's father, and it makes me blue,
'Cause, though he is my husband he is my grandfather, too. (Chorus)

5   Now if my husband's my grandfather, then I'm his grandchild,
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
I'm married to my grandfather, so I'm my own grandma! (Chorus)

    Oh, I'm my own grandma.
    I'm my own grandma.
It sounds funny, I know, but it really is so,
    Oh, I'm my own grandma.

Not sure Iain MacKintosh's recording is still available. It was on 'Live In Glasgow' (1979).

Yes, indeed you have it entirely right. . . I have JUST performed this insane song with the choir I sing in. . . and we end the whole thing with a breaking down of order into a wild argument as to wether or not this actually works, then slide into a tag with a five part harmony "SORRY!" SIck, very sick. We're all sick men. And we love it :)

I have a recording of Iain Mackintosh singing this live. At some point, he stops singing and says, "I sat down one night and worked this all out on paper. And it really does work.....it's not legal, but it works."

I've written this from memory - I think it's right!

Many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widow, who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life.
My daughter became my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
This little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle – oh, it made me very sad -
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who of course was my stepmother.

I'm my own Grandpa. I'm my own Grandpa.
It sounds funny I know, but it really is so.
I'm my own Grandpa.

Father's wife then had a son, who kept them on the run,
And he became my grandchild, 'cause he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue,
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too.
Now, if my wife is my grandmother, I am her grandchild,
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw:
As husband of my grandmama, I am my own Grandpa.

I'm my own Grandpa. I'm my own Grandpa.
It sounds funny I know, but it really is so.
I'm my own Grandpa.

The text and the idea have been around since well before the War Between the States. I forget the name of the person who adapted it to music, but a duo named Lonzo and Oscar got a lot of air play with the song in the late 'forties. Mark Twain used it in some of his platform lectures, using the title "Whereby It May Be Demonstrated That A Man Might Become His Own Grandfather." As a spoken piece if has been in the oral tradition for many many years.

Talk about a metamorphosis... From big band to Homer and Jethro.

I first heard this one by Kay Kaiser's band. I think it was sung by Ish Kabibble.

Homer and Jethro made this song a hit, and it appeared most recently on Dr. Demento's album "Country Corn" on the Rhino label, available in stores everywhere.
