Subject: Lyr Add: THE FISHERMEN HUNG THE MONKEY, O! From: Conrad Bladey (Peasant- Inactive) Date: 12 Jun 00 - 12:00 PM The Fishermen Hung the Monkey, O! The Fishermen hung the Monkey, O!- These words are the greatest insult you can offer to the Hartlepool fishermen. It is supposed when Napoleon the Grat threatened to invade England the Fishermen were loyal and patriotic, and ever on the look-out for spies. A vessel having been wrecked about this time, all on board perished with the exception of a monkey, which was siezed by the fishermen for a french spy, and hung because hecould not or would not speak English. Tune- The Tinker's wedding. In former times, 'mid war an' strife, Chorus They tried ivery means te myek him speak, Spoken- Ladies an' cheps, a chorus this time to mark our disapprobashin o' the Pugnaeshis Fishermen for Dooram, etc. Some the Monkey's fate they did bewail, Spoken-- Chorus in considerashin of the removal and total annihilashin of the Monkey's auricular organ by all those who have an Dooram, etc. Hammere his ribs, the thunerin thief, Chorus (Afdter the style of "Lather and sheave' em.") Now let us hope that ever at sea Spoken- Aw asy, Mistor, mother says it, she telled me te ax ye, te tell me te tell her;; if ye tell me,- aw say, Mistor, can ye tell us-- (Sings)--Whe hung the Monkey, O? -Edward Corvan, 1862, In: Allan's Illustrated Edition of Tyneside Songs and Readings...., |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Fishermen Hung the Monkey O! From: PoppaGator Date: 20 Jun 03 - 03:18 PM I can't seem to locate the recent (or recently refreshed, as of June 2003) thread on this topic -- the one I ready just a couple of days ago -- but came up with this one by searching the forum. Just wanted to add this comment from by brother (American resident of England) after I had forwarded him what I had just learned here at Mudcat: "During local elections last year, a guy from Hartlepool ran as the monkey, as a protest against the uselessness of the two major parties. His platform was free bananas. He won." |
