Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: John Moulden Date: 20 Mar 00 - 05:29 AM Leitrim is not a county which comes to mind instantly in connection with songs. It adjoins Fermanagh however and some of the repertory is shared. The most important traditional singer to have been extensively documented is Thomas Moran of Mohill. Unfortunately, because of the interests of collectors, his repertory is represented mainly by Child and broadside ballad versions. Recordings of him are in the BBC Sound Archive at the National Sound Archive in London, at the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin and are sold commercially by Folktrax, who will supply. Ulstersongs (www.ulstersongs,com) also has stock and this bit is a plug because I run Ulstersongs. |
Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: Alice Date: 19 Mar 00 - 06:33 PM This is an old thread from '97, but I found a site to add on this topic. I keep my eyes open for anything about Leitrim music on the web, and today I found this page with history regarding the style of the tunes in this recording by the McNamara family.Leitrim's Hidden Treasure Alice |
Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: dick greenhaus Date: 13 Jul 97 - 12:25 PM Sam Henry's Songs of the People includes a map of Ireland, and identifies where eachj song was collected. Fine book. Lots of songs. |
Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: Alice Date: 11 Jul 97 - 10:47 AM Thanks, Laoise, I'll try to find O'Lochlainn's collections. I was able to find a copy of Vol I of Herbert Hughes collected Irish Country Songs from the turn of the century at the University library here. I'll have to search farther afield for the rest of the volumes. I found a reel called "The Leitrim Thrush" in a large book of fiddle tunes. Are you familiar with that one? Lyrics? Haven't heard "Leitrim's Fancy". :) Alice |
Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: Laoise, Belfast Date: 11 Jul 97 - 06:25 AM I don't know any specific songs from County Leitrim. You could, however, try getting hold of a copy of Colm O'Lochlainn's song collections. Apparently he toured round Ireland collecting songs early this Century and it is probable that he collected some from Leitrim. Have you heard the tune "Leitrim's Fancy"? Laoise. |
Subject: RE: county Leitrim trad. songs From: Bobby O'Brien Date: 10 Jul 97 - 11:23 PM Larry Cunningham certainly immortalized Leitrim with his smash hit "Lovely Leitrim", and there are others, such as "Pride of the West", "County Leitrim Queen", "The Likeable Lovable Leitrim Lad" and "Leitrim Lullabye". If you want i can run you off a tape of them all. Email me with your address to send the tape. Email: kincasslagh@att.net |

Subject: county Leitrim trad. songs From: Alice in Montana Date: 10 Jul 97 - 08:09 PM I've posted this question in the past on Irish sites with no response. Hope someone here can help me. My grandfather came to the US in the 1880's from county Leitrim. I am trying to compile a list of songs that could have been sung by my ancestors in Leitrim. I've been singing Irish songs since the early 60's, but just recently decided to identify the one's that could be specific to that county or part of Ireland. Thnx. Alice |
