I was lucky enough, no privileged enough, to see Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka, play here in Manchester tonight.

Whilst I'm doubtless still on a high having just got back from the concert, I have to say it was one of the most extraordinary and wonderful musical experiences of my life.

To anyone who loves music in its myriad of wonderful forms (even if you've never 'got' Indian music)I would recommend this tour as an absolute must.

The technical skill of both father and daughter puts almost every western musician to shame.

Says 80th birthday celebration tour!!! Is Ravi REALLY 80?? And still doing tour schedules like that? I would have screamed MERCY at the top of my lungs. Unfortunately, no place he is performing is less than 10 hrs from here. The wages of living in the Wilds.

I absolutely love Ravi's music from the Soundtrack to the movie "Gandhi." Gorgeous. I can be found, at times, singing "Raghupahti Raghava Rahja Ram", much to the annoyance of everyone...

I certainly count myself as a Shankar fan — have been since I heard his stuff back in the '60s — but I'm an even bigger fan of Ustid Ali Akbar Khan, who plays an Egyptian version of the sitar. It has fewer sympathetic strings and, while it is just as hypnotic, gives a much cleaner sound than the Indian instrument. Khan never got as big as Shankar, so him work might be harder to find, but he's definitely worth the effort.

Ustid Ali Akbar Khan sounds really interesting. Do you have any more info on him, album titles etc?

Ali Akbar Khan did a concert at my college. It was one of the most relaxing things I've ever been to. I let the music take me where it would, not trying to analyze or understand it one bit. (Quite a feat for the music to accomplish.) Great stuff.

Sorry, no. I don't have a lot more information on him and the only music I have by him now is on an old reel-to-reel tape which I haven't had out in a long time. I probably recorded it in the days before I understood the wisdom of copying ALL the information on a record, but I'll check when I get home and see if there is anything else that might be useful. If so, I'll post it tomorrow night.

just wanted to share one of my favorite recorded moments of ravi shankars music. there is about two minutes of atonal twanging at the begining of the concert for bangladesh followed by a ripple of applause. ravi shankar speaks to the audience "i glad you enjoyed the tuning so much i hope you will enjoy the music even more."

Wow! Wonderful info on Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi...my brother has some of Ravi's albums from the 60's...I've always loved their music.

I think this quote from the Khan site kind of speaks for a bunch of us: "For us, as a family, music is like food. When you need it you don't have to explain why, because it is basic to life."

I have an Ali Akbar CD with Subramanian on violin .. from Shankar Music Circle, P.O. Box 46026, Los Angeles CA 90046 -- there is a slow raga and a fast one, and of course they are beautiful. Johnny in OKC
