Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Alice Date: 14 Jun 00 - 03:15 PM Hey, Kendall, why is this thread titled BS? Isn't it about Mudcat and music? (poking you in the ribs) Just for fun, I typed in www.mudcat.org at the BullshitAnalyzer.com site. Does anyone know how they define "meaningless content"? Alice |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: MMario Date: 14 Jun 00 - 04:22 PM I'm not sure how they define it, but it is interesting that it goes (well) over 100%. The main forum site ranked at 17p (whatever a "p" is,) and this thread came in at the same. The mudcat Political party thread ranked at 16 p and the "spancil hill" thread 18. OldSongs site came in at 28 "p" or 280% bullshit according to their ranking system. I hope (if nothing goes wrong) to be at oldsongs friday night the 23rd, and on Saturday the 24rth. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 14 Jun 00 - 04:26 PM I'll be there. I think I'll hang my "Animaterra" tshirt over the windshield of my big green Ford van. Now here's my dilemma: do I or do I not bring my 11 year old daughter? She's dying to go- she loves the music, but she loves the merchandise as much! She doesn't like following me around to workshops and would want to be free to roam around on her own. Last year she brought a friend and it was fine; this year the friend can't come. Advice? |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: SINSULL Date: 14 Jun 00 - 04:34 PM A different friend and a credit card? |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Sorcha Date: 14 Jun 00 - 05:44 PM Surely she can find/meet a new friend there? And you could meet the SPO (significant parental unit), and all would be happy? Except of course, the hazards of letting an 11 yr old shop unsupervised........ |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 14 Jun 00 - 06:37 PM Go ahead, bring your daughter. My 11 1/2 year old daughter will be there, from Thursday night on. She's a sociable sort, so things should work out if they don't think they're getting shoved together by parents. As for the craft area, let her admire it all she wants. Take note of what she really likes for future/birthday/Christmas reference, and make no promises. See ya there. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Jeri Date: 14 Jun 00 - 06:57 PM Hollowfox, I look forward to seeing you again - it's been a long time since I've talked to you. Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone. I can't wait for this!!! Just wish I had my ticked already. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 15 Jun 00 - 02:45 PM All you tent campers, you'll want to be sure to bring a groundcloth this year. They've been having a lot of rain lately in that neighborhood. The good news is that it will probably be easier than usual to get the tent pegs in. The bad news is that it might be like pitching a tent on a lake of chocolate pudding. See you (glub) there! |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Marymac90 Date: 15 Jun 00 - 03:17 PM I'll see you all there. I'll be camping as close as it's reasonable to get to the gate to the fest grounds. How close that is will depend on the weather-past and over the weekend! Real close and you're down really LOW, where it's wetter. I usually am around the pole barn somewhere. I have a tent tall enough to stand up in, and a midnight blue Mitsubishi Galant. Does anyone want to go to the Stan Rogers Folk Fest in Canso, Nova Scotia, the following weekend? If so, email me at Marymac90@aol.com Marymac |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 16 Jun 00 - 12:52 PM Last year at the Saturday night Creature Comforts sing, I promised a gentleman several pages of the Moose Son. I went home, gathered them up, and lost hte card wiht his name and address on it. I you're out there, I'm bringing the stuff along. As for you others, I'll probably have some extra copies, if you ask nicely. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 16 Jun 00 - 12:58 PM Oops. That's the Moose Song, of course. I don't have room for a moose son; my two are quite large enough, and I don't have room. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: bigchuck Date: 16 Jun 00 - 01:14 PM By all means bring kids. I have brought my granddaughters each year. (9 & 10 years old)They have a great time. Actually they tend to vanish the minute we get there and then show up at moments throughout the festival to beg for money and food for themselves and the pack they run with. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 16 Jun 00 - 02:29 PM I bring *my* kids, but the moose have to bring their own. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 16 Jun 00 - 04:35 PM Well, I'm getting closer to saying she can go, thanks to your encouragement. It'll be a good bonding time- if I ever see her, the way the kids do carry on! |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 16 Jun 00 - 04:49 PM Bonding time, or separate time in the same location. Sounds like a no-lose situation to me. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Barbara Shaw Date: 16 Jun 00 - 05:26 PM Animaterra, we brought our sons to festivals from the age of 4. They got to run around on their own around age 8 or 9 during daylight hours, and usually brought a friend in the early years. Try to get the name and campsite of at least one of the kids they might be with, and have your child check in at specific intervals, like once an hour, and less often as they get older. I do remember Frank and I fanning out to find the missing kid a few times, and usually found him sitting on the ground with 3 or 4 other kids, jamming. And then there were the times he had to find the missing parents, and found us somewhere jamming. . . Music festivals are wonderful for kids, and let them start early to feel the joy and fun of music.

Subject: question about old songs fest From: Linda Mattson Date: 16 Jun 00 - 06:14 PM Hello Mudcatters, Looks like lots of you go to the old songs festival. i'm thrilled I get to go because my company is bringing me to the East Coast for meetings and the time coincides. Can anyone tell me - looks like you need your own chair for concerts. Do they have chairs to borrow or rent? Thanks! Linda in Portland, OR |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: bigchuck Date: 16 Jun 00 - 09:58 PM Linda, as far as I can recall they don't have chairs for sale or rent. Many people get by with a blanket on the ground. |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: kendall Date: 18 Jun 00 - 11:46 AM I hope this isn't one of those things where parents turn their kids loose to commit all sorts of anti social behavior. Remember folks, peer pressure is much stronger than the influence of a parent who is no where around. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Midchuck Date: 18 Jun 00 - 12:09 PM In all the years I've been going to Old Songs, I've only seen two bad children (but I've seen them for several years in a row, now. The major problems are drummers, and old farts who think if you sing it far enough off key, it's bluegrass.... Peter. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: bigchuck Date: 18 Jun 00 - 04:36 PM Mr granddaughters resem..uh..resent that remark. Watch that "old-farts singing out of key" stuff too. I'll ask Dee to bring the conga. |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Charlie Baum Date: 19 Jun 00 - 05:21 PM lindamat from Portland-- During the daytime concerts, you will probably find chairs or benches at many of the stages, (excepting area 3, and the dance barn) and might not need your own, particularly if you're willing to sit on the ground. But for the evening, you will definitely want your own chair or blanket. If you want to travel light, purchase a cheap chair at the supermarkets or drugstores near there. --Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Mini Me Date: 21 Jun 00 - 10:36 AM Dear Linda, The official Mudcat hug is an official secret. It seems that unless this hug has a registered copyright, it is not permitted in public. With that said we will resort to plan B and the following will occur : A. A short quick focus of the eyes B. A broad smile and " Hello " in various slurs and/or international jargon. C. The extension of arms, reaching around the other person and finally ending with " It's great to meet you in person ". Please be aware this will all take place in moments and be a lot shorter than the time it has taken you to read and /or comprehend this endless run-on sentence. Mike |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: MMario Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:01 AM That was the LONGEST weekend I have had in a long, long while (And I was only there 1.5 days!!!) So much music, so many people to meet, so many CD's to choose; and the FOOD! But most of all the music, and the musicians. Probably will post more impressions of the whole thing later, but mostly want to post a "THANKS!" to Bill and Allen C - 'cause if they weren't on the Excellent Adventure I probably would have passed on Old Songs again...and Thanks to Sandy and Caroline and Dick and Susan for "hosting" the MudCatters... |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:04 AM Wasn't that a time?! I'm still high, but fastening my seat belt for the crash once I realize it's another whole year to the next Old Songs. I felt so strongly the community we've all forged here in cyber-space. To see it bloom even stronger in "real" time was amazing and beautiful. Let me add my thanks to two wonderful men for whom the term "gentleman" must have been coined. I lift my glass to Allan and Bill. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Midchuck Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:11 PM LISTEN UP! THIS IS IMPORTANT! Don't forget, if you were at Old Songs, or even if you weren't, to send in your evaluation sheet, and stress how nice it was that they put a porta-potty in a central location in the infield, across from area 3, so that people camped there didn't have to walk half a mile in the middle of the night, and how sad it was that it was "out of order" on Saturday... Peter. |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: kendall Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:58 PM Old Songs was wonderful. Laryngitis kept me from singing, but, I still had a good time. Meeting all you mudcatters was a real treat. However, there is a down side..Some of you found out that I am not really a "pain in the ass" or a grumpy old fart.. BUT I HOPE TO BE ONE SOMEDAY!! Anyway..dont tell Max..ok? |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: GUEST,Don Meixner Date: 26 Jun 00 - 01:29 PM I can't say how much I enjoyed myself. Everyone was a treat to meet and talk with. I hope see you all again soon. Butnext years Old Songs is on the week end my boys graduate from high school so I won't be there. And waiting two years will be tough. Getting to swap songs with Kendall Morse for an hour was definately a high point for me. He sings as well with Laryngitis as many do without it. He even let me play his Taylor guitar. I even did some jewelry business. A perfect week end from start to finish. Don |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: kendall Date: 26 Jun 00 - 01:52 PM Don, it was mutual. I really enjoyed that little session with you. I'd also like to thank Bill and Dick for buying one of my tapes. |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: kendall Date: 26 Jun 00 - 02:11 PM It's not easy being a New Englander. Really, I have a very hard time promoting myself. Tell ya what, send me ten bucks and an address, and I'll send you one. The ten will cover tax, postage and the package. Call it a mudcat discount. You have a choice of three tapes. The Seagulls & Summerpeople is a tape of Maine Humor with one song, Mooseturd Pie, the one titled Lights along the shore is a collection of old songs such as Lorena ( all six verses) Bally James Duff, Satisfied Mind..etc. I would prefer that you order those directly from Folk Legacy. The one you may order from me is titled, Beginners Luck. This is a collection of songs on one side, and stories on the other. Songs include, Phoebe Snow, Ashes on the sea, 3 legged man, Rolling Home, The Haying song, Mrs. Ravoon, Palace Grand,Band played Waltzing Matilda and, Gently, down the stream of time. |

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: TheMuse Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:57 PM "Beyond pleasure" is how I felt at Old Songs. It was my first visit and won't be my last. Meeting Mudcat people that I've never seen before but already felt they were friends was an extraordinary feeling. Hearing them say "Muse!" when they found out who I was was a real treat. I was able to thank Bill and Allan in person for their Great Adventure that I think brought us all closer as a Mudcat family. I was thrilled to be sitting between them at a Sing around when they both took their turns. And I discovered that Kendall is definately not a pain in the ass (of course I never thought he was!) and is indeed very huggable. Special thanks to the Folk Legacy 'Catters who provided us with our unofficial/official meeting place. The entire weekend was as close to perfect as it could have possibly been in every way. Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Sorcha Date: 26 Jun 00 - 07:10 PM Seriously thinking about an Eastern Tour next summer, if Himself can schedule the offical vacation to fit. Not a Grand Tour like Allan and Bill's--but go from here to Ohio and Penn, then do Old Songs and my family in Philly,MD, and DC. About how many days should we schedule for driving time to spaw's place? We are about 12-14 hrs from Wichita,KS for an overnite at the maw-in-law's, then how much longer? And just which weeks should we schedule in order to make Old Songs in the middle? What are the dates? |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: bigchuck Date: 26 Jun 00 - 08:16 PM It was indeed great weekend (and very full), with absolutely unprecedented weather (for OS). It was a great pleasure to meet Bill and Allen and the many other Mudcatters I met in person. Many thanks to Dick Greenhaus and Sandy and Caroline. My personal high point (one of many) was taking my 9 yr old granddaughter to her first guitar workshop and watching her play and sing for a bunch of strangers. I recommend it highly. |

Looking forward to seeing lots of you in October. JudyO |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 28 Jun 00 - 06:00 PM Whew! I just got back to work (and 'net access) today. My soul hasn't caught up with my body yet, as they say. I've always loved Old Songs, and it was soo good to meet those of you that I did meet. Somehow I missed a few. Well, better luck next year. One thing we all seemed to forget in the pre-festival descriptions...the sign interpretation (nominally for the deaf)! The visual interpretation of "The Five Constipated Men in the Bible", or Les Barker's poem "Dachshunds With Erections Can't Run Upstairs" adds immeasurably to the depth of comprehension for the hearing audience as well.

Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Hollowfox Date: 28 Jun 00 - 06:19 PM Maybe this should be a new thread...Sorcha, if you're going through Ohio, you've got a place to stay in the northeast part (diagonal from Catspaw). I'm very near Route I-80. The week immediately before Old Songs would'nt be very good (I visit relatives on the way to the festival), but earlier, or after OS is fine. After all, it *is* nice to visit with somebody who knows what you're talking about after a gathering. *BG* |

I'd urge you all to try to make it next year! It's a fine gathering. Sandy |
Subject: RE: BS: mudcatters at old songs From: Allan C. Date: 29 Jun 00 - 04:54 PM I really have a hard time at large events. Crowds bother me. I tend to close myself off from my surroundings like a box turtle does emerging from time to time to eat. I will own up to feeling a little of that at times during Old Songs. But mostly, I was enjoying the company of fellow 'Catters and a few total strangers too much to notice the crowd. It was a pleasure to meet Mudcat folks "live and in person". I hope to see each of you again soon. The stage shows were fabulous. The workshops were great. But the thing I looked forward to the most was the late night sings. Sadly, by the time they started, I quickly ran out of energy and toddled off to my sleeping bag. But those who stayed to the end had great things to say the next day about the beautiful music of the night before. |
