Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Leadfingers Date: 01 Feb 07 - 10:40 AM The Blaydon Races is in the D T ! |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: The Borchester Echo Date: 01 Feb 07 - 10:47 AM But it probably wasn't in the DT 10 years ago. What exactly is the relevance of the above piece of doggerel? I've heard the 3rd stanza before . . . |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: John Routledge Date: 01 Feb 07 - 11:37 AM Looks like it was posted by mistake. It was also posted to a more appropriate thread :0) |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Mr Happy Date: 01 Feb 07 - 11:51 AM Seems modern Blaydon [on Tyne] Races are an atheletics competition!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaydon |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Dave Sutherland Date: 01 Feb 07 - 02:33 PM Clicking on the wikipedia link above will give a more accurate version of "The Blaydon Races" than the one in DT. The chorus starts "Oh me lads ye shud hev seen us gannin, Passin the fowk alang the road just as they were stannin'" and the penultimate verse should have them crossing the Chain Bridge and not the Tyne Bridge |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: The Borchester Echo Date: 01 Feb 07 - 02:51 PM As used in ad for the northern edition of the TV Times: Don't be late for Channel 8 Be sure to get The Viewer |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Alec Date: 01 Feb 07 - 03:02 PM Hadn't looked at the DT version but you're right. The Tyne Bridge wasn't opened until 1928 & is in any event only very circuitously "On the road to Blaydon" |

Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Scrump Date: 02 Feb 07 - 06:31 AM Yes, DaveS is right, they've already said they went down the Scotswood Rd past Armstrong's, so clearly they didn't cross over the Tyne Bridge, and the Chain Bridge at Blaydon is the next obvious crossing point. |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Dave Sutherland Date: 03 Feb 07 - 07:10 AM Following on from Countess's last post I remember the said magazine receiving a letter from a reader following the live television broadcast of the 1961 Amateur Cup Final between West Auckland and Walthamstow Avenue, stating that before the match they were sure that they could hear the marching band playing the tune "Oh me lads, you've got to get The Viewer" and asking was the tune known elsewhere? |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Susanne (skw) Date: 03 Feb 07 - 07:08 PM Can anyone explain 'the Robin Adair', please? Benny Graham said it was a pub, but all I found by googling was a sailing ship. |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: GUEST,mandylifeboats Date: 03 Feb 07 - 07:14 PM Benny's right, it was a pub, long since demolished. |
Subject: RE: Blaydon Races From: Alec Date: 04 Feb 07 - 02:03 AM A second pub also called the Robin Adair was built on the same spot (slightly east of the Tyne Bridge)This was a hideous concrete box of a building which was never very popular & was eventually also demolished. Robin Adair himself was apparently a well thought of local Coachman. |
