I really wish I was the one going, but a friend will be staying in Anstruther, northeast of Edinburgh, from July 1-5, and she wondered about festivals and other music happenings within reach at that time. Anyone?

While in Edinburgh, she might want to check out the sessions at the West End pub. Good Scottish fiddling and occasional songs there. I defer to others for festivals.

There's always a load of things to do in Edinburgh in the summer. She won't be bored.

Not sure when it is but I think i've mentioned it on Mudcat before - the Auchtermuchty festival, near Blairgowrie, about halfway between edinb & st andrews - afraid i don't know when it is though, and i suspect it might be later than july, but worth a try? jayohjo XX

This is the only one that appears in the festival listings page that is in Scotland in the time given:
Glasgow Jazz Festival, Glasgow
George Benson, Tito Puente, Joe Lovano, Martin Taylor, Yellowjackets, Blind Boys of Alabama, Tommy Smith, King Pleasure...
July 3-9...Phone 0141-2875511...
Cheers

If she can stay until the weekend (July 7,8,&9) there's Newcastleton Festival. It's a small village right on the border about 30 miles NE of Carlisle. There's no paid guests apart from the ceilidh (dance type) bands. There are various competitions and plenty of singarounds and sessions in "The Grapes", "The Liddiesdale", & "The Legion". Everyone just goes for the joy of singing, playing, oh yes I almost forgot drinking. LOL.

Some good folk pubs in Edinburgh. The Castle Bar,beside the Castle, The Tass on the Royal Mile, The Royal Oak and The Whistlebinkies. From 30 June to 2 July a new festival Scotland's voice, withlots of good quality Scottish music including the doyen of ballad singing Gordeanna Mc Culloch and lots of other goodies. Thanks, all. She's off tomorrow and I've send her this thread via email. Maybe we'll gain another 'Catter into the bargain!
