I remember this well. A really quirky, funny show, and to me the best thing Newley ever did. 'All night engraving' was just hilarious. Whenever I went to the West country by National Express I used to look out for the road sign to Gurney Slade. It would be grand to see it again. Would it seem as funny after all this time I wonder?

I remember the show well. One of my lasting memories is of GS on a moving train passing comment on trackside adverts. "ear piercing while you wait" was one - imagine the comments - "Can I leave my ears and call back?
Another was All night engraving.
Comedy was king then

I just got an e-mail from someone in a highly respected multinational helpcentre called Wattapong Pisanporn, I think someone was really hacked off when he or she's job was out sourced to asia and gave this as a suggested european name to use! Just googled it, graduated from the Assumption College Bangkok, can't write this stuff! there are a few Pisanporns in Bangkok!

With regard to the music by Max Harris, like Will Fly I also bought the record many, many years ago.

I started using it as the theme tune for a bilingual (Manx Gaelic and English) programme on Manx Radio called 'Traa dy liooar'. About a month after that, it cropped up in that television advert - it was Bob Mortimer doing the ad, I think, but, like Malcolm Smith, I don't know what the product was. Ah, the power of advertising.

'Traa dy liooar' is Manx Gaelic for 'time enough', so the opening and closing with its tick-tocking seemed just right.

In fact, I'm using the music again for an hour-long version of 'Traa dy liooar', this time all in Manx Gaelic - Manx Radio AM (AM1368) or at www.manxradio.com (and it's also available for a week after first broadcast in the Listen Again feature), for all you many speakers of Manx Gaelic out there.

CathodeRayTube has an excellent review of the new dvd and states that the theme is indeed based on Parchman Farm.

The theme music was written by Max Harris. I remember buying the single when it came out - we all thought it was a rip-off of Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm".

An update to this thread dredged from the past. I just ordered a dvd from Amazon UK of the complete series of this program.
It was just released after redoing the 35mm masters. Apparently it only lasted for 6 shows and was then cancelled as few people at the time could understand it.
There is now a wealth of infornation about the series on the internet as opposed to the absolute lack thereof 11 years ago.

I've been to Gurney Slade. Not as interesting as Nebnett Thrubwell, but infinately more exciting than Puncknowle (pronounced Punnel).

Just heard from Paul Roy Goodhead of the Anthony Newley Fan club. He says " The TV series was owned by ITC who have recently been sold. The tapes are not commercially available and are tied up in a tremendous amount of red tape.All we can do is wait, hope,and prey(sic)".
My next question is, who do I prey on?

I think for ITV you would be best trying for the regional TV company e.g. Granada, LWT etc. Dont' know the prog. so can't be of any more help.

The Shambles, thank you for the links. Here I was looking for information at The Mudcat and all I had to do was take the bus.Of course I have to find a way to get to Bath first.I found the IMDB site via the Anthony Newley Fan Club site and you're right there isn't much there.
Malcolm Smith, the visual effects Newley used were what made the program very different. They were later copied by the Beatles in their movies.
I would appreciate it if someone could give me the URLs for both the BBC and ITV.Fionn's blue-clickey thing didn't work for me. In the meantime I will go asearching for those sites.

Gurney Slade is a village in North Somerset and is attached to a village called Binegar - it is not very far from the big (wet?) party at a farm which is just starting! However, I do not recall the TV programme!

I remember this, too. Him in a raincoat with speeded up walking, darting too and fro over the title music. In recent months I have seen an advert on tv which I believe uses the same music and has a parody of the visual style, but I can't remember the product

There was a "popular" novelist called Warwick Deeping who wrote a book entitled "Mr. Gurney and Mr. Slade", and I'd always imagined Newley got it from there, but if it's a placename, both could have been derived from that, of course.

When I was a teenager, I lived in London ('59-'62).At that time there was a telvision program called the "Strange World of Gurney Slade". It starred Anthony Newley, and as far as I know was directed and produced by him.
It was indeed a strange program and of course it was one of my favorites.Becuse of it I learned about Anthony Newley and came to appreciate him as a singer/songwriter/playwright.
My question is; Do any of our UK Mudcatters remember the show and do any of you know if tapes of it are available?
