I'm looking for the verses and melody ( and if some one has a set of guitar chords to offer I won't refuse) for the above named song. I heard it once on a folk show in Santa Cruz and was so charmed by the story and chorus that the chorus has stuck to me since.

We'll see you in France or we'll see you in heaven Cried Trbo and Samuelson out on the bay. Two hearty young oystermen after adventure And no one believed they could row all the way.

The verses tell how the afore mentioned young oystermen catch wind of a newspaper sponsored contest, I believe in Boston, but some other Eastern seaboard city might be the true locale. A large cash prize is offered to the first two men to row across the Atlantic to France. The story is a classic underdogs success through grit and hard sweat, with dramatic near drownings in mid Atlantic, and a fortuitous meeting with a Norwegian freighter. (Oh yeah, I forot tomention that our heroes are Norwegian.) Either the last or next tolast verse recounts how they get to Ireland and could like any sensible people stop there, and claim the prize anyway. Of course these guys aren't going to wuss out like that, "and just two weeks later they were down at Le Havre", or something like that.

I have no idea who the singer was, though the voice was powerful enough to be Stan Rogers. Can you help me out?

Much obliged,

The Reverend Slow Motion

You'll find it on the Digitrad under HARBO and Samuelson. I don't know how to do blue thingys, so just look under H. It was recorded by William Pint and Felicia Dale on "Port of Dreams".

It was composed by Jerry Bryant, who performs at Mystic Seaport's festival, among many other places, and sings in the band "Finest Kind."

RSM, I suspect the voice you heard on the radio was William Pint. I recently found the song, taken from "Port of Dreams", on an anthology CD from Waterbug Music. Waterbug is a wonderful independent label, founded by Andrew -- damn, I've forgotten his last name. More ginkgo, please! -- that features contemporary singer-songwriters with a leaning toward traditional. I remember hearing William and Felicia at festivals and music parties in Seattle in the 80s, and it's good to see they're still together and sounding better than ever. Harbo and Samuelson is a great story and a wonderful song.

Aloha,
Mark

PS, did you ever hear Bob Reid in Santa Cruz?

The Ballad of Harbo and Samuelsen was also recorded by Rick Lee on his CD, "There's Talk About a Fence" (Waterbug 0047).

Andrew Calhoun, Mark, and he's now living and performing in the Portland [OR] area! Fantastic label isn't it? I gather the tune changed someplace after Jerry Bryant wrote it, and the one you hear most performed is not the original.
Blessings,
Barbara

Pint & Dale's tune is pretty close to the way Jerry wrote it & in case there are any readers from the Hairy Foxes outlaw outfit Dick did receive Jerry's permission to included it in the DT. The two hero's left from Brooklin (New York City, close to Boston but you wouldn't be able to find it on any map)& made first landfall in England. Jerry wrote it after - well you can read all that in the previous threads. Barry

If you want a follow-up for the song, check out The Ballad of Louis Mills (Dwayne Thorpe).

Thanks, Barbara, it's been bugging me (pun unintended) all day. Yes, I highly recommend the Waterbug label. I found out about it when searching for music by Andrew's ex, Kat Eggleston, whom I knew in Seattle back in the 20th century.

Aloha,
Mark

Thank you all VERY much! You will all know how it is when a song just won't let you go, and this one has had me for a hell of a while. More applause to all later. Good Night!
