The ones mentioned was sung by the church that was just 3 houses away and when I was a child, all of us used to sit on the steps to hear the Black church's hymns. I sang in my own church's choir in those days. I was an E.U.B. (German church) in the 40's in Johnstown, Pa. I have trouble finding good versions of the old songs. |

When my twin boys started kindergarten in Alabama, the school insisted on putting them in different classes (big mistake in this specific case). One little fella had the most experienced teacher in the school, and the other had a huge black lady (later found out she was actually pregnant) who was moved from 4th grade to kindergarten the day before school started. She didn't even have chairs in her room the day before school started. There were tremendous differences in the resources that each classroom had --- but this kind lady taught my son to sing All Night, All Day, Angels Watchin' Over Me.. As it turned out, this little fella always had trouble going to sleep at night, and even when he was 10 years old, I would hear a little voice coming from his room...singing...All Night, All Day, Angels Watchin' Over Me, My Lord. |

Yes, Sinsull, I am a wrestling fan, thanks for asking ;o)... I have to agree with "Elijah Rock" and "My God Is A Rock" as good negro spirituals.. also, "My God Is A God" (Wendell Wallum has a good arrangement of that), and "My God Is So High" is very good.. Also, "I Got Shoes" is a really great one. "I Got A Robe" is pretty good, but I've heard arrangements where, for some reason, a composer has added scatting parts, which makes little sense to me. Subject: Several Spiritual-related queries From: Haruo Date: 29 Dec 00 - 10:34 PM Joe, and everybody, the Cyber Hymnal (which recently changed its URL twice; hopefully they've settled down permanently now at tch.wordnic.com — I don't know what went wrong at Simplenet) actually has quite a few of the old standard Negro Spirituals, though usually with MIDIs better suited to white-style churches (heavy pianoforte where you want mainly voice). I notice they just added Steal Away in the last week or two. But I resurrected this thread mainly to ask about a few Spirituals in connection with my hymnal. I just added nine more songs to my collection today, which brings it to a total of 200 (if I'm not forgetting any) hymns (including carols, spiritual songs, metrical psalms, etc. under the rubric "hymns"). Five of the nine are set to American Spiritual tunes (though only two are versions of the usual American texts), plus one is a setting of the Lord's Prayer to a calypso tune whose secular text(s) I'm interested in descrying. (I'd like to know what isle or archipelago it hails from, too.)

They come from an era when "black" and "African American" were not commonly used - although I do hear occasional references to "black spirituals" and "African American spirituals."
