"Great Waking Up Morning" I love the song, and it was recently used during a movie about a regiment of Negro soldiers formed during the civil war. Forgot the name of the movie, Morgan Freeman was in it, and it was well worth watching. Yours, Aye. Dave

I would like to find the midi or audio sites that has these find songs. The ones mentioned was sung by the church that was just 3 houses away and when I was a child, all of us used to sit on the steps to hear the Black church's hymns. I sang in my own church's choir in those days. I was an E.U.B. (German church) in the 40's in Johnstown, Pa. I have trouble finding good versions of the old songs.

Mbo - Is that the Angels Watchin' Over Me that I know? Sing it for me in HearMe next time!

When my twin boys started kindergarten in Alabama, the school insisted on putting them in different classes (big mistake in this specific case). One little fella had the most experienced teacher in the school, and the other had a huge black lady (later found out she was actually pregnant) who was moved from 4th grade to kindergarten the day before school started. She didn't even have chairs in her room the day before school started.

There were tremendous differences in the resources that each classroom had --- but this kind lady taught my son to sing All Night, All Day, Angels Watchin' Over Me..

As it turned out, this little fella always had trouble going to sleep at night, and even when he was 10 years old, I would hear a little voice coming from his room...singing...All Night, All Day, Angels Watchin' Over Me, My Lord.

Hey, I didn't realize that would get so many responces. Yes, Sinsull, I am a wrestling fan, thanks for asking ;o)... I have to agree with "Elijah Rock" and "My God Is A Rock" as good negro spirituals.. also, "My God Is A God" (Wendell Wallum has a good arrangement of that), and "My God Is So High" is very good.. Also, "I Got Shoes" is a really great one. "I Got A Robe" is pretty good, but I've heard arrangements where, for some reason, a composer has added scatting parts, which makes little sense to me. Anyway, thanks for your responces to my inquery. Have a good day!

Subject: Several Spiritual-related queries
From: Haruo

Joe, and everybody, the Cyber Hymnal (which recently changed its URL twice; hopefully they've settled down permanently now at tch.wordnic.com — I don't know what went wrong at Simplenet) actually has quite a few of the old standard Negro Spirituals, though usually with MIDIs better suited to white-style churches (heavy pianoforte where you want mainly voice). I notice they just added Steal Away in the last week or two.

But I resurrected this thread mainly to ask about a few Spirituals in connection with my hymnal. I just added nine more songs to my collection today, which brings it to a total of 200 (if I'm not forgetting any) hymns (including carols, spiritual songs, metrical psalms, etc. under the rubric "hymns"). Five of the nine are set to American Spiritual tunes (though only two are versions of the usual American texts), plus one is a setting of the Lord's Prayer to a calypso tune whose secular text(s) I'm interested in descrying. (I'd like to know what isle or archipelago it hails from, too.)
  • Donu la manon is a translation of the Swedish "Räck mig din hand", set to a tune that sounds to me like Do Lord more than anything; I can't find "Do Lord" in the Digitrad, to see what you call the tune, nor is it in The Cyber Hymnal. Anybody know what the secular antecedent of the tune was?
  • La lumo venis al la mond' is a translation of the Swedish "Det ljus som liv åt världen gav" set to "Michael row the boat ashore"
  • Kune manghu ni nun is a translation of "Let us break bread together" to its proper tune
  • Tero kaj chielo kantu is a translation of the German text "Erd und Himmel sollen singen" set to an African-American Spiritual tune the source calls "Singin' wid a sword in ma' han'". Anybody know the full text of the original Spiritual?
  • Venkos ni en gloro, finally, is a Christian modification of the standard Esperanto version of "We Shall Overcome"
The other new songs in my hymnal are a version of Quelle est cette odeur? (What or Whence is this fragrance?), just in time to be too late for Christmas ;-(, and two original-in-Esperanto hymns to Maccabæus ( and this).

Liland

Wade in the Water
O Freedom
We Shall Overcome

Did I read somewhere that Mahalia Jackson would only sing religious spirituals as she got older? (Because they had "hope" as opposed to blues that don't)

Also, did I read that a spiritual is characterized by the singer talking to him/her self?

I hate it when I can't find quotes I think I remember.

Well, the term for this type of song is still usually "Negro Spiritual" in the United States. They come from an era when "black" and "African American" were not commonly used - although I do hear occasional references to "black spirituals" and "African American spirituals."

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hasn't changed its name, either.

Hi Joe: I was wondering when someone would bring that up... but, I also notice that few if any capitalize Black. I suppose it speaks to the fact that the majority here, for some reason are White, (I was going to write white lower case w as a joke, but well... maybe it is the neighborhood in which I live...)
One of my fav's was writen by a White fellow for a Black film, "The End of the Road" from "Halaluya"
All the best
Lorcan
