From: Rick Fielding

Hold onto your hats, Toronto Catters! Celebrated members Big Mick and Dave Swan, ably accompanied by Pam, Mary Lou, and 8 year old Ciara, are making the BIG drive from Michigan to Toronto THIS Sunday!

I know you're just calming down from the experience of meeting Allan, Bill Sables and Bert...but this opportunity may not come again. After all, Mick may be a world class sex symbol, but he's no spring chicken! If Swanno wears his Fireman's uniform, cheesecake photos will be allowed.

You're welcome at our place, anytime after 12 noon THIS SUNDAY June 25th. We're at 1235 Kingston Road. (just east of Victoria Park) Pot luck. Bring stuff! Instruments welcome. Make it early, 'cause they have to leave before 6 pm. Phone number is 690-8697.

Yep, it was a surprise to us as well!

Rick and Duckboots

Still reeling and more coming! See you. Early. Duckboots, are you still interested in day lilies? Mine are still spreading and a chunk is headed for the composter if there are no takers.

Rick,

My son has a lacrosse game at Kew Beach on Sunday, I was thinking of dropping by to see you regardless on Sunday. And my Uncle is back in town, he brought his Mandolin, he's playing again. This could work out very well indeed.

So what should I serve out of my resonator this time?
stuffed potato pockets
vegetarian sushi
veggie sticks and onionless dip
harmony and grits (being a banjo and all)
Well I'll think of something.
Mick you have little time to practice that big hug I want. And Mr. Dave Swan, it will be a pleasure to meet you and all the folks making this northern trip.
I sure am looking forward to this very special day.

Actually since this is pretty late notice if anyone can contact some of the Ontario folks and let 'em know, that would help. Like Rana, Black Walnut, Davey, Noah etc.

Hi, Rick,
You are in for a huge treat having Mick in Toronto. If I could I'd make the trip from Connecticut I would but I'll be at Old Songs, hopefully. Please pass on my hellos, love and a hug. I can't wait to see him again at the Getaway. Every nice thing everybody says about him is absolutely true.

Don't know Dave but I'd like to as I participated in his great post card caper last year.

Bonnie--It's chicken-fried steak he'll be wantin' from the resonater. If you don't know how to make it, call your nearest Cracker Barrel restaurant for carry-out (or is it "take-away" in Canada?).

Damn Rick & Heather (and all you other lucky Torontulas!). I am world-class jealous. Especially since I didn't get to see Mick, Bill & Alan last weekend as planned in Grand Rapids because my ##!**# plane got canceled.

Oh well, have fun anyway! And give Mick and Mary Lou hugs for me. Kath

Yes, I can have too many daylilies. They're just the wild orange ones trying to take over the yard, but I dig 'em back to a reasonably sized patch each year. You want some??? They're trying to crowd out the rhubarb and a gooseberry bush. My yard is a suburban postage stamp. The mint also thinks it owns the place but it smells nice when I mow...

a.) I NEED day lilies and the orange ones are my favorite kind.

b.) I make spectacular chicken-fried steak avec gravy to die for (which usually only happens after several years of eating way too much of it)

c.) My presence in Toronto would bring this party to an entirely new level. Whether that would be sinking or rising remains to be seen.

d.)ergo, I think someone should send me a plane ticket to ride and I'll start packing.

Thenkyew,

WW

P.S. If this ploy fails, please give Big Mick and El Swanno a big, wet sloppy kiss for me. No tongue. They're married.

Wyo, I'll think of you when I'm planting them, wish I could send you the plane ticket, but then I might have to buy everybody a plane ticket.....

I can't believe that Mick, Swanno et al are driving all this way to meet the Toronto Mudcatters but it will great to meet them.

Thanks, Duckboots. I appreciate the sentiment. I'm actually going this weekend to buy some day lilies for my very own little garden. It's a wee bit late in the season for them here in southern Colorado, but I think they'll be ok and I simply HAVE to get something in this bare ground.

Party on!

Sweet Jazus, but how the hell are Swanno and I going to live up to this hype?????..................LOL.

Dave and Pam arrived last night, and as we often say, it was wonderful to meet old friends for the first time. I would remind you all that we are travelling to Toronto in order that a quorum will be present for the first bored meeting of Lane, Patterson, Swan and Fielding, Layabouts-at-Large. In my case, make that very large. I will expect all visitors to the bored meeting to conduct themselves with the appropriate amount of decorum. I will also expect you all to give 'Spaw a long distance bronx cheer for missing this very historic and histrionic occasion. We are going to drive 13 hours roundtrip for a 3 hour gathering, but comments about our mental stability will not be tolerated...................OK, Peter T, they will be tolerated but expect us to put some mustard on them and send them right backatcha...........hahahahaha

Be prepared, because Pam is an absolute sweetheart. Her judgement in hanging out with Swann is in question, but other than that she is about perfect..........well.....uuummmhhhhhh....there is the matter of the bodhran she took off the plane, but we have treatment programs around here for that.

See you all on Sunday.

Big Mick

That's an interesting idea al..........You'd definitely get the travel distance award.

As to the rest of you.........................

This thread is real damn painful. As some of you know, Karen and I were supposed to be in Michigan this weekend too, until a change of plans from Karen's sister fouled up the works. We still tried to work it out, but it wasn't happening. Now the pain in missing this is even worse. Rick wrote me the night before he posted this and asked if there was some way I could make it. All day yesterday and last night I thought about how to do it and had some great schemes in mind. All of them involved two things that are in short supply here, time and money.

I love you all and know that Sunday will be a wonderful occasion for Mick, Mary Lou, Dave, and Pam.....and for all the Toronto and other 'Catters as well who plan to attend. Rick and Heather are special folks so I know it will be great. I can't think of any funny lines here because I'm really disheartened by the whole damn thing. I can't even think how to end this rambling post!!!

Best to you gang.....Enjoy this "Bored Meeting" and know that I accept all those Bronx cheers. I'll be further south at that time than Ohio, so add a little extra volume! Now I'm going to stop beating myself up with this shit and look forward to some private time with Karen and to seeing all of you at some point or another in the future. Til then, to my partners in the firm of Lane, Patterson, Swan, and Fielding, Layabouts-at-Large..........

Have a Great Time... and KISS MY ASS!

Spaw

Hopefully if we have any "Special" guests, they'll be able to amuse children! Being the "childless ones" Heather and I don't have much experience in that area. Guess we could put 'em to work doing some drywalling while we sing. Oops, forgot about the cats. They should amuse the kids for at least five minutes!

Just kidding Buddy...I'm only making you feel guilty in a humourous way. We will indeed hoist one in your honour. How well I know about "time and money". Man, if I'd done my homework, and gotten a JOB instead of a degree in banjo, I'd pick up the tab and fly the damn party to YOUR place!

Willie, feel free to invite your Toronto friend...we're already gettin' past crowded, so what the hell!

Spaw, give us a phone call sometime around 3 and we'll get everyone on the speaker phone to sing a song to ya!

Hope someone's got a camera.

Oh Rick, you socialite, you. You are so Trumanesque, at times. (That'll really throw 'em)

Dear 'Spaw,

The kids and I understand, really, we do. We know that your busy life is all done on our behalf, and that your efforts now are just your way of taking care of us later.

A little news from the home front for you. Little Ricky is getting very good on stringed instruments. He is somewhat disappointed that he only has 27 guitars, 18 banjos, 6 melodians, a zither, 7 and a 1/2 bodhrans, 2 fiddles (one borrowed), and 2 hurdy gurdy's. He says all the other kids, like Peter T., MMario and even little Embo have more. It really tears my heart out when he sits and stares at the hammered dulcimer...sez it reminds him of you. Little Neo, the bonny wee lass is getting all grown up and will need all new ankle socks any day. Send money if you can. Because things are a little rough, I had to send Jed and Aine off to Texas to special schools. Jed keeps speaking in rhymes and Aine is talking some gobbledeegook with too many consonants.. Makes no damn sense at all. And I have my hands full with Kat. She loves playing in the sandbox, but has the nasty habit of going number 2 and burying it. Really pisses off the rest of the kids. Oh, and I am thinking of sending THE FAIR ONE off to the same speech therapist as Jed and Aine. She is having a problem saying the word "Down". And she often is seen holding a wierd little stick she calls a tipper. I probably wouldn't mind her holding that sticyk, if she would just do it right.

Well, dear Pat, I must sign off now. The neighbor just dropped off the kids for me to watch for a week. Since you aren't around much, you probably don't remember them. Dave and Pam? She is a cutey, but Dave has a helluva mess on his upper lip. I have been scrubbing like hell but it won't come off. Probably a birthmark. I think I will take them to the park in Toronto this weekend. Wish you could be there. We will think of you often.

Love,

Big Mickelina

URGENT: IF ALL THESE TEENS AND PRE-TEENS ARRIVE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LEARN SOME BRITNEY SPEARS SONGS REAL FAST!! (Like: "I Knew I Had My Virginity Here A Minute Ago", and others). I note with some trepidation that both Britney and Christine Aguilera, not to mention Keri Russell (from the infamous Felicity of TFTD fame) were all Mouseketeers. Yes it's true, I WAS trying to get all the poison ivy out of Duckboots' garden...and you're right Peter, I can't spell "Perle"...however, can you name the cast of "Call Me Madam"?

Mick and anyone else who needs further directions (the address and phone are at the top)

If you're coming from the west (say Michigan) take the 401 hiway straight through Toronto to Victoria Park Avenue. Turn south off the 401 onto Victoria Park and follow it as far as it will go (well not into the lake) Turn left on Kingston Road for about 3 blocks...look right for 1235...turn into driveway. (we'll leave a space for our guests of honour)

I'm doing a concert tonight at the Performing Arts Lodge (with the Travellers, Nancy White and Garrett and Stubbs) and have been madly doing "summer set-ups" on all my instruments, installing pick-ups on Dobro and autoharp (devlishly difficult) and re-memorizing words to some old songs (since this concert seems to be for "older" folkies!)

Duckboots is cleaning like a madwoman while listening to Dusty Springfield.....but if she's got any sense, she'll say "screw it", and wait till her sister "McKNEES" gets here in September, and does it for us!

Lookin forward to seein' you Cats. Banjo Bonnie's even leavin' the onions out of her Greek salad, just for me! I'm not worthy!....but it saves me from having to whine about my "onion allergy" again!

Rick

Oh Spaw, when were you ever around me long enough to hear me sing Frankie Valli? I do enjoy the 4 Seasons very much. But my favorite Philly performer is Jim Croce. And Seamus Egan too...

They came! We sang! Some of us fell in the garden. I'm going to see my doctor in 10 minutes.

All in all a great afternoon.

...some of us requested that the bodhran be played. And enjoyed it immensely!

Alison, WyoWoman, Spaw, there's a jam for you whenever you can swing by!

That was unbelievable. Just a great time. I'm still digesting it. And I got a couple of souvenirs. One of them is...Mr Fielding's former working guitar, an insanely great sounding dreadnought Lowden-designed thundermaker. I fell in love with it on the spot, played it all aft. (Why did I bring all my instruments anyway? Mostly to show them to Rick I think!) "Wouldn't ever part with this, would you?" I asked hopelessly. He thought hard then suggested a price. I thought to myself "that can't be what he said." Next morning I was going to buy a fiddle pickup then I thought, "pickups I can get anytime. You DON'T see a guitar like this every day, not at an affordable price anyway." So I called up Rick and the rest is history. Oh, man. I have to play it right now.

Mick, Pam, Dave, Mary Lou and Ciara, thanks for setting the events in motion that got me this guitar! I loved meeting you all!--Bonnie, Tony, Peter et compagne. And Crow thanks for nagging me to come (didn't take much).

And to all of you, I highly recommend a visit to Mr Fielding's Basement Emporium.

Most of all, THANKS RICK & HEATHER!!!!!

Willie-O and Thundermaker.

Willie, you are lucky I didn't bring my mid 60's vintage Guild. Now there is a boomer. I will race you title for title any time......................LOL.

Rick and Heather are the most marvelous hosts one could imagine. I love them dearly just from the Mudcat. When one adds the spice of their hospitality, the stew becomes brilliant. I hope that the friendship never cools. And to say that Ciara is enamored of these wonderful people would be ranked as one of the top three exhibits at the Understatement Hall of Fame.

And to Peter T, Crowhugger Val, Willie, Tony, and the bonny Bonnie.............you are the best and form the core of what I hope will become and even larger group of wonderful Canadian friends.

All the best,

Mick

I'm so sorry that I missed it. I had planned on going but something came up at the last minute. Sounds like another wonderful time.
