When the Reivers were together in Kamloops, British Columbia in the 1970s/1980s we came across a recording by Rory and Alex McEwan and Dick and Caroline Farina, and sang their version of it. While clowning around in rehearsals, Reiver 1 and I began substituting what we thought were appropriate phrases in certain lines. I don't believe we ever used these in public, but I always wished we could. We'd use different "voices" as appropriate for the different characters, with two of us sharing the roles of the gallant knight, the locksmith, Sir Oswald (with a lisp), a stuttering page boy, the gentle maiden and a multi-voice chorus. Great fun! The words went like this: CHASTITY BELT "Oh, say, gemtle maiden, may I be your lover? Condemn me no longer to mourn and to weep. Struck down like a hart I lie wounded and fainting, Oh, let down your drawbridge, I'll enter your keep." CHO: Enter her keep, nonny, nonny, Horny old creep, nonny, nonny. He'd have gone elsewhere, but the price was too steep. "Alas, gallant errant, I am not a maiden, I'm married to Sir Oswald, that cunning old Celt. Dermott Ryder had a folk music program, Ryder Round Folk, on Sydney radio station 2MBS-FM, first went to air in November, 1982. After five years on air, he put out a compilation album of about 30 tracks recorded (mostly) at the radio station by Australian artists. Album never released on CD, to the best of my knowledge. |

From: Rowan Date: 06 Dec 07 - 12:16 AM I have little recollection now of how I learned this song but it preceded Christmas 1964, as I recall performing it (words as given above) at a Melbourne Uni Botany Dept Christmas party, with Roger Parrish, Geoff Hope and Jeannette Boer; Jeannette was draped with strategically-placed pieces of Alfoil and I was armed with a giant pair of boltcutters in case the "key" didn't work. Record players were scarce at that time and I don't recall seeing or hearing any recordings of it; I must have heard someone, probably from the Mountaineering Club sing it. The club had lots of singers with wide repertoires (and few instruments) and prided itself on promulgating a singing and dancing tradition. Some three years later I helped Tom Kneen compile the club's songbook as part of that tradition. Cheers, Rowan |

From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Jan 03 - 04:59 PM Idlecombe Farm sessions were purely the resposibility of Len Harman who had the farm.He later went 'legit' with a proper auditarium with a balcony,though he never had a licence for alcohol so the interval convoy to the Bull and Butcher in Turville remained a feature of the evenings.One of the high spots in my checkered career was doing a support booking for the McCalmans in the barn. I got my version of The Castity Belt from the singing of the late Theo Johnson. |

From: GUEST,bigJ Date: 29 Jun 00 - 09:13 PM Hi Mike Just as a matter of interest, I've just looked up my copy of 'Sing' that contains the words of the 'Chastity Belt' - it appears in Volume 6 No. 10 - that's for June 1962. Hell, SO long ago! On the front page there's the headline article, together with a photo of Pete Seeger, which tells us that he will not be going to jail for contempt of congress after a US Circuit Court threw the case against him out. Among the other songs in the magazine are The Leaving of Liverpool, The Hamburg Floods (by Fred and Betty Dallas), A Space Shanty (by Stan Kelly), and another Fred and Betty song 'Come With Us'. The footnotes to the Chastity Belt say: "The origins of this song lie somewhere between the Cambridge St. Lawrence Society and the Oxford Heritage Society - though neither claims the credit. The tune is from Oxford and the words are a 'combined universities' affair." Regards |

Probably at the Noel Timpson Youth Centre. I don't remember Mike Hareding doing the song back then. I roughly agree with the prior words. I started performing with some friends about 5 years ago and we do the song taking individual parts, almost as a mini play, always goes down great. I have a tape recording, somewhere, from Picadilly Radio of Jasper Carrot doing Bastity Chelt, what a great song that is I only attempt that version after too much beer. |

He was(and is) one of the 'unsung heroes' of the '60s folk revival. He did a tremendous amount to spread the word through Sing! magazine, through his column in the Melody Maker, and as an organizer of concerts and other events (we didn't have proper festivals in those days). Long may he continue to flourish - and my best wishes to yourself. And Hi there, Christopher Rainbow! I don't recall the Turvill folk club, but I did play at a couple of singaround ceildhs at Idlecombe farm, near Turville. Maybe we met there? I think they were organised either by Eric Johnson (who went off to Birmingham to become a schoolteacher) or by Dennis Manners (who later founded the very successful Towersey Folk festival). Back in the early days when clubs were few and underfunded, and when large-scale folk festivals were hardly thinkable, stalwarts like Eric W, Eric J and Dennis put in many hours of unremunerated effort to get the movement rolling, and to keep songs (including the Chastity Belt) in circulation. And then there was weeping, and great consternation, The song was current among folkies at Oxford when I was there in the early '60s, but nobody seemed certain of the author's name. I think it had been composed a year or two earlier, as a comedy sketch for a student stage show. At a very convivial party, I scribbled down the words for Eric Winter, then Editor of the British folk music magazine, Sing!. After obtaining the music from my mate, Bob Pierce, Eric published the song in Sing!, in the spring or summer of 1962. Through that - or some other - channel, the song reached Rory McEwan, who incorporated it into the folk music programme he put on at the 1962 Edinburgh Festival, along with his brother Alex, and Carolyn Hester and Dick Farina. Since then, it seems to have gone around the world. If the real author is out there, will he or she please own up. Wassail! |
