From: Thomas Stern Date: 20 May 17 - 09:29 PM WAVERLEY RECORDS ELP 113 FOUR FOR FUN EP 1963 (recorded c.9/1962) Rory and Alex McEwen, Carolyne and Dick Farina "Four songs, four singers, three men and a girl. It was the Edinburgh Festival of 1962 that brought Rory and Alex McEwen, two of the most popular folk singers in Britain, into partnership with Carolyne and Dick Farina, a husband and wife team from America. The four songs they sing all come from their Festival show. Two are American, one is Scots, and the other, a new one, is naughty in any language. The soprano is Carolyne. The harmonica is Dick. And Rory and Alex the guitars." Note: "Carolybe Farina" is Carolyn Hester. Best wishes, Thomas. |
Subject: Lyr Add: CHASTITY BELT From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 May 17 - 08:31 PM My sister was at Manchester University in the early '60s when she came home for summer holidays with her guitar and this version (from memory, with a gap or two) Oh come, gentle maiden, let me be your lover; Condemn me no longer to mourn and to weep, Shot down like a hart in my earnest endeavour. Come, lower your drawbridge, I'll enter your gate. (Enter your gate, nonny nonny, enter your gate, nonny nonny, lower your drawbridge, I'll enter your gate) I fear, gentle (??), that I am no maiden, I'm married to Sir Cedric, the cunning old celt, And he's gone to the wars for a twelvemonth or longer, And taken the key to my chastity belt. (Chastity belt, nonny nonny...) Fear not, gentle madam, for I know a locksmith. To his forge we will go, on his door we will knock, And we will make use of his technical knowledge, To see if he's able to unpick your lock. "I fear, Sir and Madam, that I am unable; My technical knowledge is of no avail. I can't find the secret to this combination: The cunning old bastard has fitted a Yale." "I'm back from the wars with sad news of disaster; A dreadful misfortune I have to confide: As my ship was passing the straits of Gibraltar I carelessly dropped your key over the side" "Alas and alack, I am locked up forever!" Then up steps the pageboy, saying "Leave it to me. If you will allow me to enter your chamber, I'll undo your lock with my duplicate key." |

Subject: Lyr Add: CHASTITY BELT From: GUEST Date: 17 Mar 08 - 05:17 PM There are several threads in the Forum dealing with this song and it's also in the Digitrad (slight differences in the lyrics from those posted earlier on this thread). When the Reivers were together in Kamloops, British Columbia in the 1970s/1980s we came across a recording by Rory and Alex McEwan and Dick and Caroline Farina, and sang their version of it. While clowning around in rehearsals, Reiver 1 and I began substituting what we thought were appropriate phrases in certain lines. I don't believe we ever used these in public, but I always wished we could. We'd use different "voices" as appropriate for the different characters, with two of us sharing the roles of the gallant knight, the locksmith, Sir Oswald (with a lisp), a stuttering page boy, the gentle maiden and a multi-voice chorus. Great fun! The words went like this: CHASTITY BELT "Oh, say, gemtle maiden, may I be your lover? Condemn me no longer to mourn and to weep. Struck down like a hart I lie wounded and fainting, Oh, let down your drawbridge, I'll enter your keep." CHO: Enter her keep, nonny, nonny, Horny old creep, nonny, nonny. He'd have gone elsewhere, but the price was too steep. "Alas, gallant errant, I am not a maiden, I'm married to Sir Oswald, that cunning old Celt. He's gone to the wars for a twelve-month or longer, And taken the key to my chastity belt." CHO: Chastity belt, nonny, nonny, Cast iron and felt, nonny, nonny, She can't get out of her chastity belt. "Fear not, gentle lady, for I know a locksmith; To his forge we will go, on his door we will knock (thumps on guitar) And try to avail us of his specialized knowledge, To see if he's able to open your lock." CHO: Open your lock, nonny, nonny, Sounds like a crock, nonny, nonny, Will he be able to open her lock? "Alas, Sir and Madam, to help I'm unable; My technical knowledge is to no avail. I can't find the secret to your combination, The cunning old basket has fitted a Yale." CHO: Fitted a Yale, nonny, nonny, He'll get no tail, nonny, nonny, Senile old locksmith can't open a Yale. "I'm back fwom the waws with bad news of disastah, A tewibble mishap I have to impaht. While my ship was a passing the stwaits of Gibwaltah, I ovehboahd dwopped the key, sad is my heaht." CHO: Sad is his heart, nonny, nonny, Clumsy old fart, nonny, nonny, He overboard dropped it, (he's not very smart.) "Alas and alack! I am locked up forever!" Then up spoke a pageboy, saying, "L-L-Leave this to me. If you will a-a-low to enter your ch-ch-chamber, I'll open it up with my d-d-duplic-c-cate key." CHO: Duplicate key, nonny, nonny It worked for he, nonny, nonny, Saturday nights with his duplicate key. -- Reiver 2 |
Subject: Lyr Add: CHASTITY BELT From: GUEST,KW Date: 17 Mar 08 - 01:30 AM I have been singing this song since I picked it up from a friend in the Footlights at Cambridge in 1964. Some slight differences in the lyrics compared with the version above: Say, gentle maiden, may I be your lover? Condemn me no longer to mourn and to weep! Struck down like a hart I lie bleedin' and pantin', Let down your drawbridge and I'll enter your keep. Enter your keep, nonny-nonny, enter your keep ... Come let down your drawbridge, and I'll enter your keep. Alas, gentle errant, I am not a maiden - I'm married to Sir Oswald, the cunning old Celt. He's off to the wars for a twelvemonth or longer, And taken the key to my chastity belt! Chastity belt, nonny-nonny, (etc) Fear not gentle maiden, for I know a locksmith, To his forge we will go, at his door we will knock. And see if we can avail us of his technical knowledge, And see if he's able to unpick your lock! Unpick your lock, nonny-nonny ... Alas Sir and Madam, to help I'm unable, My technical knowledge is of no avail. I can't find the secret of your combination - The cunning old bastard has fitted a Yale! Fitted a Yale, nonny-nonny ... I'm home from the wars with sad news of disaster, A terrible mishap I have to confide - As we were a-passing the straits of Gibraltar, I carelessly dropped the key over the side. Over the side, nonny-nonny ... "Alas and alack I am locked up for ever" (sung falsetto), Then up stepped a pageboy, saying 'Leave this to me! If you will allow me to enter your chamber, I'll open you up with my duplicate key!' Duplicate key, nonny-nonny ... As I recall, this song, like Teenage Cremation, was one that Cambridge blamed on Oxford and Oxford blamed on Cambridge KW |

Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: Rowan Date: 06 Dec 07 - 12:16 AM I have little recollection now of how I learned this song but it preceded Christmas 1964, as I recall performing it (words as given above) at a Melbourne Uni Botany Dept Christmas party, with Roger Parrish, Geoff Hope and Jeannette Boer; Jeannette was draped with strategically-placed pieces of Alfoil and I was armed with a giant pair of boltcutters in case the "key" didn't work. Record players were scarce at that time and I don't recall seeing or hearing any recordings of it; I must have heard someone, probably from the Mountaineering Club sing it. The club had lots of singers with wide repertoires (and few instruments) and prided itself on promulgating a singing and dancing tradition. Some three years later I helped Tom Kneen compile the club's songbook as part of that tradition. Cheers, Rowan |

Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Jan 03 - 04:59 PM Idlecombe Farm sessions were purely the resposibility of Len Harman who had the farm.He later went 'legit' with a proper auditarium with a balcony, though he never had a licence for alcohol so the interval convoy to the Bull and Butcher in Turville remained a feature of the evenings. One of the high spots in my checkered career was doing a support booking for the McCalmans in the barn. I got my version of The Castity Belt from the singing of the late Theo Johnson. |
Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: pavane Date: 13 Jan 03 - 12:34 PM I too remember Diz Disley singing it. Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 13 Jan 03 - 11:35 AM I wrongly thought this might be a song based on an old joke, which is as follows: The Baron was leaving for the Crusades, leaving his new bride behind, and said to his best friend, "I just might die on the Crusade, and my bride would be left locked in her chastity belt forever. Can't have that, can we? I know I can trust you, of all men, to guard my wife's chastity while I am gone, leaving with you the key, just in case I don't come back." The friend replied, "I am bound by the holy bonds of friendship as well as feudal fealty to you and your house, Baron. I give my sacred oath that I would lay down my life to preserve your bride's chastity while you are gone!" The Baron and his troops, with drum and trumpet, marched out of the castle and over the hill. About fifteen minutes after they started, the friend, riding madly, whipping his horse, caught up with the Baron. "Baron! Baron! You left the wrong key!" Dave Oesterreich |

Most of my old copies of Sing! and Sing Out! are as long gone as ol'Lost John - but then, I would keep lending them out to people. Still,it's nice to think that the song itself is still in circulation and amusing people after all these years. I wonder why? - does this survival reveal something discreditable about our sense of humour? And on that subject ... Q: What's the difference between a folkie and an endowment insurance policy? Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: GUEST,bigJ Date: 29 Jun 00 - 09:13 PM Hi Mike Just as a matter of interest, I've just looked up my copy of 'Sing' that contains the words of the 'Chastity Belt' - it appears in Volume 6 No. 10 - that's for June 1962. Hell, SO long ago! On the front page there's the headline article, together with a photo of Pete Seeger, which tells us that he will not be going to jail for contempt of congress after a US Circuit Court threw the case against him out. Among the other songs in the magazine are The Leaving of Liverpool, The Hamburg Floods (by Fred and Betty Dallas), A Space Shanty (by Stan Kelly), and another Fred and Betty song 'Come With Us'. The footnotes to the Chastity Belt say: "The origins of this song lie somewhere between the Cambridge St. Lawrence Society and the Oxford Heritage Society - though neither claims the credit. The tune is from Oxford and the words are a 'combined universities' affair." Regards |
Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: GUEST,John B Date: 28 Jun 00 - 11:12 PM I don't remember from whom, or where I picked up the words /tune to Chastity Belt from somewhere in Manchester in the late 60's. Probably at the Noel Timpson Youth Centre. I don't remember Mike Hareding doing the song back then. I roughly agree with the prior words. I started performing with some friends about 5 years ago and we do the song taking individual parts, almost as a mini play, always goes down great. I have a tape recording, somewhere, from Picadilly Radio of Jasper Carrot doing Bastity Chelt, what a great song that is I only attempt that version after too much beer. |

Subject: RE: Help: Chastity Belt -- Recordings? From: MikeofNorthumbria Date: 28 Jun 00 - 06:06 AM Hi there, BigJ! This may be thread drift, but what the heck! It's great to hear news of Eric Winter. He was(and is) one of the 'unsung heroes' of the '60s folk revival. He did a tremendous amount to spread the word through Sing! magazine, through his column in the Melody Maker, and as an organizer of concerts and other events (we didn't have proper festivals in those days). Long may he continue to flourish - and my best wishes to yourself. And Hi there, Christopher Rainbow! I don't recall the Turvill folk club, but I did play at a couple of singaround ceildhs at Idlecombe farm, near Turville. Maybe we met there? I think they were organised either by Eric Johnson (who went off to Birmingham to become a schoolteacher) or by Dennis Manners (who later founded the very successful Towersey Folk festival). Back in the early days when clubs were few and underfunded, and when large-scale folk festivals were hardly thinkable, stalwarts like Eric W, Eric J and Dennis put in many hours of unremunerated effort to get the movement rolling, and to keep songs (including the Chastity Belt) in circulation. We shouldn't forget our debt to them. Wassail, |

Come let down your drawbridge, and I'll enter your keep.
Alas, gentle errant, I am not a maiden -
Fear not gentle madam, for I know a locksmith,
Alas Sir and Madam, to help I'm unable,
I'm home from the wars with sad news of disaster,
And then there was weeping, and great consternation, The song was current among folkies at Oxford when I was there in the early '60s, but nobody seemed certain of the author's name. I think it had been composed a year or two earlier, as a comedy sketch for a student stage show. At a very convivial party, I scribbled down the words for Eric Winter, then Editor of the British folk music magazine, Sing!. After obtaining the music from my mate, Bob Pierce, Eric published the song in Sing!, in the spring or summer of 1962. Through that - or some other - channel, the song reached Rory McEwan, who incorporated it into the folk music programme he put on at the 1962 Edinburgh Festival, along with his brother Alex, and Carolyn Hester and Dick Farina. Since then, it seems to have gone around the world. If the real author is out there, will he or she please own up. Wassail! |
