Subject: Lyr Add: SMILE (Turner, Parsons, Chaplin)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 02 May 05 - 01:16 AM

The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music lists this song in its catalog, with a publication date of 1954, but they do NOT have the sheet music images available online.

Lyrics and chords are available at The Guitar Guy:

SMILE
Lyric by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. Music by Charles Chaplin.

Smile, though your heart is aching.
Smile, even though it's breaking.
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by,
If you smile through your fear and sorrow.
Smile, and maybe tomorrow,
You'll see the sun come shining through for you.

Light up your face with gladness.
Hide ev'ry trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever so near,
That's the time you must keep on trying.
Smile. What's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile,
If you'll just smile.

[The theme of the 1936 Chaplin film "Modern Times." Although I haven't seen a full explanation, I'm guessing that only the tune was used in the film, and the lyrics were written later. Or maybe not.

[At any rate, I believe Nat King Cole recorded these lyrics around 1954.]

See Edna Purviance - Smile for confirmation of your supposition and the first page of the sheet music.

I remember a little girl singing this at a church concert and fell in love with her. I was about 11 at the time! Wonder what happened to her! No doubt a granny now!

"Modern Times" was not strictly a silent film; in fact, it was Chaplin's first film that used sound. It included his wonderful "double-talk" song, which was the first time his voice had ever been heard by a film audience. It's a wonderful film, and definitely worth seeing (again).

Aloha,
Mark

Interesting timing, Mark. Yesterday I noticed a tabloid-format magazine-newspaper for the Portland area (not Willamette Week, but similar looking) that had on its cover an old photo of The Broadway theater, with the marquee reading "Charles Chaplin in MODERN TIMES," with the sub-heading: "Hear Charlie Chaplin TALK!"

I just may have to go pick up that issue while it's still on the stands.
