Subject: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Áine Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:29 AM Yee-haw! The Mudcat's back! Thank you, Max, Bert and all the other elves that got us back up and going! Now, what did you Mudcatters do while the 'Cat was away? Several of us "found" each other on HearMe last night and had a fantastic time. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Bill D Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:35 AM Oh, just translated the "document contains no data" message into 27 other languages..... |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Gervase Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:36 AM Me? I had to get on with my bloody work! Welcome back. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Mbo Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:37 AM We sure did!! And you was great Aine! I worked on the tape I'm making for Mudcatters of my music. Lots of time to work on it during the crash! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: IvanB Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:42 AM Aside from checking every hour or so and whining when the Cat STILL wasn't up, I joined the Hearme last night. 'Twas a glorious time, and kat didn't even have to use her whip too much. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Áine Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:42 AM *blush* -- And you were your usual wonderful self, Mbo. Glad to hear that work on the tape got done -- can't wait to hear it! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Terry K Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:43 AM Hearme must have finished early - I went in at 06.00 a.m. UK time but nobody was there. Hearme text chat is a lifeline for just such occasions - it was eerie to find no Mudcat and nobody in Hearme - I started asking myself "where has everybody gone" and "did any of this ever exist". Glad you're all back. Cheers, Terry |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:53 AM Teryy, sorry we missed you! It was a lifeline! I think this was all a big plot by Catspaw, who was away for the weekend...in fact I am sure he planned it somehow....sure so we'd know how much we missed the Mudcat AND him!**BG** luva'llkat |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Dulci46 Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:54 AM I kept trying to get into Mudcat ever so often . Sure glad it is up and running. Checked to see if anyone was in Hearme ever so often trying to find out what was wrong with Mudcats. Mbo didn't give me a chance to ask this morning when he came in. And nobody was on Hearme when I went in at 12:00 last night. I thought it was gone forever. Thanks Jon for telling me what was wrong. Mbo are you doing this tape to sell? You certainly should be doing one!!! |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 26 Jun 00 - 10:56 AM How long did the crash last? I didn't know about it until this morning, because I was at the Old Songs festival having the time of my life with Bill Sables, Allan C, Jeri, Sandy & Caroline, Dick, Susan, Hollowfox, Charlie Baum, MMario, Don Meixner, Kendall, bbc & Duane, the Muse, Barbara Shaw, Lindamat, Marymac, and many more wonderful people. What a time we had! I'm sure there'll be another thread about it but this seemed a propos here. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: MMario Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:11 AM *waves at animaterra* ~ How'd Sunday go? I was halfway hoping the car would break down Sunday morning so I didn't have to go back to w*rk. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Mbo Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:15 AM No, not to sell, Dulci. Just some home recordings I'm doing for folks. Nothing profession sounding! Dang, Old Songs sounded like a blast!!! --Mbo |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:23 AM It was, it was! *waving wildly back at MMario* |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Little Neophyte Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:33 AM While the Mudcat was out of order, I sat in front of the computer, stared down at my navel and asked it many questions. Bonnie |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Alice Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:35 AM I asked other Mudcatters on my music email list if they were getting the same error message, then I worked on prospecting for more clients. If anyone wants to join my list in case of future Mudcat blackouts, it is at http://www.egroups.com/group/musicmail |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: SINSULL Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:50 AM Paranoia hit fast and strong. First I thought that government agents had arrested Max and permanently shut the site down for refusing to remove lyrics; Then I figured Gargoyle and his playmates had permanently erased us just for the fun of it. Then I thought - Oh my God, I finally offended someone badly enought to be shunned! As I brushed invisible bugs from my hair I cried, they won't let me in. Will definitely copy and paste your address Alice. Mbo, make a CD. I'll buy it and give it to all my friends for Christmas! SS Rocking herself gently into Nirvana |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Mbo Date: 26 Jun 00 - 11:54 AM Sins, I'd rather rock to Pearl Jam! Or maybe some SUH-MOKE STACK-UH LAAAAAHTNIN'!!!! |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Sailor Dan working?? Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:04 PM Oh my goodness, ITS BACK AGAIN. Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Max Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:33 PM Sorry all. I spent the weekend... well... moving, cleaning and hanging out with friends. Our entire network went down just about, almost all of our web sites. We are obviously making efforts to avoid this in the future. But its no big deal really... afterall its only the Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: MMario Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:37 PM Ouch! Max, Do you mean ONSTAGE was down? |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Áine Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:37 PM Hmmmmm -- I would just love to know what particular actions were encompassed in that "...well...", dear Max. (hehehehe) And I forgive you for that "it's only the Mudcat" crack, although grudgingly.... Ya buggah! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:40 PM Only the Mudcat???? A lot of us missed it! The only thing I cant work out is whether we should allow you to have a life or to have you chained to those computers ;-) Jon |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: thosp Date: 26 Jun 00 - 12:55 PM checked in every so often -- to see if it was back up ---- i don't have any idea how to get to hearme - without a link through Mudcat ---- peace (Y) thosp |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 26 Jun 00 - 01:07 PM Mau alive, I can't believe it. Here I was LAMENTING the entire weekend that I didn't have the time to 'cat around, and lo and behold, there was no mud' the whole time! All weekend the boys drove me to distraction, and each evening I'd put them down, think about booting up, and crash instead. This is the first chance I've had since Friday to check it out... so I guess the short answer is I missed it terribly but for all the wrong reasons! |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: SINSULL Date: 26 Jun 00 - 01:25 PM Mrrzy, Back to normal already. The boys have you too tired to compute. Congratulations! As for you Max, I didn't realize you had a life and frankly, I resent it! Love, SS |

Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Áine Date: 26 Jun 00 - 01:55 PM Dear KGH, Hey, it's OK with me if you want to swear at AOL anytime you want!! Frankly, I think AOL is where all those fellas that used to fly those mysterious unmarked black helicopters went after they got 'outed' by that 'Unsolved Mysteries' TV show... -- Áine |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Amergin Date: 26 Jun 00 - 02:18 PM I donned a straight jacket and moved into a nice hotel room with padding on the walls.... |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: BlueJay Date: 26 Jun 00 - 02:47 PM I was camping. Didn't see even a radio. I didn't know the Mudcat had crashed till yesterday, and then I started checking every few hours to see if it were back. I've been looking for an explanation to what happened, but haven't found one other than it crashed somehow. Just curious, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Bert Date: 26 Jun 00 - 02:55 PM What happened is that Mudcat can't afford to have people in the office 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So if a machine goes down, or locks up, late Friday Evening, we might not get to it until Monday Morning. Cut us some slack guys, or volunteer for the weekend and graveyard shifts. Bert. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: MMario Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:08 PM Bert - you're not getting any complaints here...believe me, I know about systems going down... |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: SINSULL Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:08 PM Bert, Nobody is angry or even complaining. I for one was shocked at how upset I was that I couldn't get into Mudcat last night and this morning. I had no idea how important it had become to me. Consider the slack cut. And if I haven't said it loud enough, thank you for all you do. SINSULL |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:09 PM Bert, If I lived over there, I would gladly volunteer my services for times like that. Jon |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Peter T. Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:14 PM Bert, it would be nice if you were able to recreate bbc's alternative trouble page on another server (if you have one). When it was reabsorbed, it of course went down with the rest. It is a pacifier for commiserative purposes. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: IvanB Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:36 PM Bert, I sincerely hope nobody thinks that you and Max and anybody else involved in keeping the Mudcat server running shouldn't have a life apart from MC. I know that, despite all my pissing and moaning about not being able to connect, I also thought about all the work involved in keeping MC going the 99.9999% of the time it IS online. And, frankly, having dealt with a server during my working life that could be depended on to go down any weekend I tried to connect for some data I needed for a project due on Monday, I'm amazed at the low failure rate for Mudcat. I'm sure much of the frustration being expressed is just an indicator of how much Mudcat has come to mean in many lives. We luv ya guys [although I think Jon F's idea of chaining someone to the server does have merit ;-)]. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Noreen Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:40 PM I went to bed at a reasonable time! ):o) Missed Mudcat terribly. Found myself wondering (like TerryK) whether I'd imagined it all. I didn't know that I could get to HearMe by another route...but I do now! --Noreen |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Sean Belt Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:42 PM Oh my gosh! I'm almost embarrassed (well, truthfully, no) to admit I didn't even know it was down until I logged on this afternoon and saw all the messages mentioning it. I was far too busy spendong a rainy weekend playing old-time fiddle tunes on my banjo and dulcimer to even think about the computer. Alas! - Sean |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Morticia Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:46 PM Oh thank God...you're back! How I've missed you....it's been terrible...I wound up talking to the children...how much more desperate can you get?? Of course I actually practised about ten times more than I usually do, rather than just write about it so I suppose there are some plus's, nonetheless, no more crashing without a note from your mother, signed in triplicate and preferably in blood, and submitted to me at least a full fortnight before the expected date of crashing and only to be approved if I....and everyone else...is on holiday. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Escamillo Date: 26 Jun 00 - 03:56 PM You know that, as a singer I'm an excellent programmer, so I'm not afraid of crashes at all. Simply dedicated more time to work and a little surf in the Web brought me a couple of good software components I needed. Sorry for my customers, but the Mudcat is back. Un abrazo - Andrés |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 26 Jun 00 - 04:12 PM It was kinda like the episode of the Simpsons where Crusty's Show gets canned and all the kids slowly go outside to play, rediscovering all the healthy things they used to to have fun before the Glowing Bealzebub of a CRT was their only form of entertainemnt... Boy am I ever glad THAT'S over with!! LOL!! {~` |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: SeanM Date: 26 Jun 00 - 04:15 PM Bert, Max, and the rest of the incredible crew; It's been said before, and I'll say it again. You've created a wonderful site, and I'd say the reaction above just scratches the surface of how much the 'cat is loved, and what it's done for some of the 'catters. Thanks, all. You do wonderful work. And I'll stand behind the guy that'll pound anyone who says different. M |

Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 26 Jun 00 - 04:28 PM What did I do when Mudcat crashed? Thrashed around on the floor in withdrawal symptoms, that's what! Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Llanfair Date: 26 Jun 00 - 04:49 PM I tried really hard to fill the space left by mudcat. Finished the "Broken Sword" game Collected enough elderflowers for 5 gallons of wine, should be ready about October time. Solved a couple more clues in "The Stone" game. Slept a lot. Hwyl, Bron. |

Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:24 PM Aw, darn. I tried HearMe at 10 my time (1 AM Mudcat Time), but nobody was there. Even the Help Forum was down Sunday, although a few of us gathered there Saturday to comiserate. Maybe we should make an agreement to meet at HearMe when the 'Cat is down and keep HearMe going, so people don't suffer too much. The URL for our HearMe room is http://members.tripod.co.uk/jonbanjo/hearme.htmMight be a good idea to bookmark it now. I believe it's completely independent of the Mudcat server, so it will probably be working when the 'Cat is down. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: TheMuse Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:28 PM If I hadn't been at Old Songs having the time of my life, I would have been having serious withdrawal. As it was, just not being able to get in last night, was bad enough. But I survived coasting on the high of meeting a bunch of wonderful Mudcatters as Animaterra mentioned previously. thosp - heres a suggestion, next time you're in Hearme, save the address to your favorites, then you can get in even if Mudcat is down. (Which hopefully won't ever happen again!) TheMuse |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Callie Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:30 PM I thought it was me, so I tried to think of devious ways of getting in. Could only think of one. logged to on Aine's home page, which I've book-marked, and tried to get in through the link. Thank you Max. The Drug is back!! |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: TheMuse Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:30 PM Oops! Joe beat me to the saving Hearme idea - thanks Joe for posting the address. |
Subject: RE: What Did You Do During The Crash? From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Jun 00 - 06:46 PM Just to confirm what Joe had said, the Hearme room we are using is completely independent of Mudcat. It depends: 1. on the relevant pages at Tripod.com being avialable and 2. the servers at Hearme.com being in operation. Jon |
