Did I miss it, or was there actually no thread on the news story of last week where a sausage factory owner was accused of murdering three inspectors???

And the followup the next day from the FDA warning people not to eat a certain batch of sausage cuz it MIGHT just not be 100% CLEAN and safe to eat?????

Now I ain't SAYIN' the three inspectors got 'Becked, but... I can't be the only one wondering!

Anyone else have more info, so this can become a song challenge? Or did I miss this, is it old news?

~So-Confoozed Sooz

Reminds me of "Wilt". I saw the murder story but missed the FDA warning. Great theme for a song.

Bert.

There was a butcher in the 50s in NYC who ground his wife into patties. Several of his customers developed trichinosis and that's how he was found out.

Nice talk for a Monday. Makes the wood chipper method look almost humane.

sounds like a good time to revive THE BALLAD OF ALFRED PACKER (Waste Not, Want Not) and Phil Ochs version

also...almost forgot... in 1977, the US Department of Agriculture named their staff canteen after Alfred Packer! Not knowing what he did, they said "Alfred Packer exemplifies the spirit and fare that this agriculture department cafeteria will provide." A few months later, they found out what Alfred Packer did, and they renamed the cafeteria.

This is getting even better than the story I hoped someone would, um, dig up, and I didn't intend this at all! But go ahead!

Bill D, You have to provide your source for that quote. That's classic.

Or did the story make the rounds when Sweeney todd hit Broadway?

well, I found the exact date and quote on the net, but I moved to Wash DC in 1977, and I remember the story being in the papers..it was an ongoing joke for quite awhile. Lines about the "Packer Memorial Cafeteria" were a big thing.

As far as "Packer Memorial Cafeteria" goes, the students of the University of Colorado ar Boulder overwhelmingly voted to name the dining facility in their (then-new) Student Union the "Alferd Packer Memorial Grill" in 1968. The name remains, despite several efforts to change it.

Maybe they should rename the "Sweeny Todd Memorial Cafeteria."

Hi...My grandfather and mother sang the "Johnny Rebeck" version of this song and I saw a cable TV show last year (2004) about a mass murderer that killed all kinds of people in the Chicago area in the late 1890's and early 1900's. They were mostly immigrants new to the USA.He boiled and ate them! This song may have come from that event to warn these new immigrants...( vaudeville perhaps???) Also I had read another version that the character (Johnny Rebeck) was a butcher in the eastern USA, perhaps Massachusetts (where my grandfather was born). "Johnny Rebeck" was discovered to have killed people (instead of using the word "people"in the song, they used the words, "cats and dogs") and ground them into sausages like in the song. The tale goes that a little girl was sent to his shop to buy some sausages and she found out what he was up to and then he tried to kill her, but she was able to get away. She ran to tell her parents and then they brought a mob of people and they burnt down his butcher shop with him it...or they killed him

Charlie Nobel:

It was Mrs Lovatt, not Sweeny Todd. She had the next door shop that sold meat pies. It shared the basement with the barber and had a nice big oven.

Check out the current case of the serial killer in British Columbia. Remains of 31 of the women he killed have been found on his pig farm. Neighbors say his pigs were always well fed. Not sure where they were marketed.
He has been in custody since 2002 but the charges are still increasing and the trial is wtill in the future.
70 women
