I won't have time to experiment with this until the weekend, but today I found a way for those of us unable to use HearMe, (and those who can) to use Netscape browser and the CoolTalk plug-in to hear each other. I registered with the comment that says "Mudcat member". If anyone has experience using CoolTalk, I'd like to know what you think of it. As I said, I haven't had time to use it yet, so I don't know the quality. Here are the systems supported:

platforms including Windows 95,
Windows NT,
Windows 3.1,
MacOS,
SunOS,
Solaris,
HP-UX,
Digital Unix,
and IRIX.

Here is the website CoolTalk -click here

Here are the Netscape plugins for CoolTalk

If anyone on a Mac or any other system would like to try a voice test this weekend, please let me know. Personal message is fine.

Alice

Well, I registered and I think it warrants looking into, esp. since I saw something about upgrading to full duplex! BUT, I don't like the idea that, as soon as I registered, I was listed in a public forum as "waiting for a call." I like the privacy we have with HearMe, although I DO wish it included all systems. when I tried to unregister at CoolTalk it told me it didn't have enough info to do so, even though they had my email, nickname, and IP addy. I've emailed them about removing me. Maybe I just didn't pay attentiona dn there is a way to make it more private. I did see you listed, too, Alice and I used "Mudcat member" in the Comment line, too.

Interesting anyway, thanks,

kat

Only problem is, some of us don't use Netscape, or have the big bucks to fork out money it.

Mbo, Netscape is free. Just go to the Netscape homepage and download it. Or, you can get a CD of the software for $5.95. http://home.netscape.com/

I have not tried CoolTalk yet...would be willing if it does NOT have intrusive stuff...i.e. cookies, ads & 'spyware' involved...ICQ & hearme are, so far, pretty private and non-commercial

Well, Bill, kat was right when she said your email address becomes public on the board to all viewers, so I don't know if this is the right solution for Windows and Mac users to get together. I'm not too comfortable with that lack of privacy, either. I still have not tried it.

I went back to CoolTalk and tried getting in with only a nickname and no other information (email address, etc) and no problem, you don't have to provide personal information. I still have not tried talking with anyone using CoolTalk. I'll let you know what develops.

I tested CoolTalk last night with Allan C. It was like a bad shortwave radio connection. With a cable connection it may be better, but on our dial up modems from rural areas, it kept cutting out. One good point was that the line was always on, you didn't have to hold anything down to speak. It also does not work with multiple locations, just one location to another.

Thanks for trying Alice but it doesn't sound as is CoolTalk will meet our needs.

The sound does break up on Hearme sometimes but overall, the sound quality is quite acceptable for our use and it does work with multiple locations and it even seems to work well for people with connections as slow as 28.8K.

Hopefully something will turn up one day but at the moment, it seems to be impossible to find anything that works as well as Hearme but provides Mac support.

I suspect that the most likely solution lies with the PC/ Windows emulation software for the Mac but I am not in a position to help in the testing of such software.

Jon
