LOL Ruby is fondly thought of even today in the UK, especially when one thinks of curries.

You coming for a Ruby Murray - meaning - you coming for a curry. :-)

Patty.......If it's in stock, you can get it from Continental Records at:

http://www.gocontinental.com/

This is a good source for old vinyl. Their catalog alone is a treasure.

If all else fails, backchannel me at:

rsbassoc@neca.com

and I'll make you a copy......Tiger

Mike Seeger and Paul Brown sing a song on their album "Way Down in North Carolina" they call'Goodbye, Little Bonnie.' He attributes it to the Ward family of Grayson Co, VA. He uses the same chorus but subs Bonnie for Johnny. He says the song is similar to "More Pretty Girls Than One" and is about a young man rejected by a girl's parents and so he leaves. If this would be the song, I can listen to the lyrics and type them out. Let me know.

Well, I wish I could say I remember all those lyrics now, but I don't! (Just the chorus:) Anyway, I'll at least know what to look for now and maybe be able to find it somewhere. We've got a Hard To Find shop in Indianapolis that is pretty neat - I might try there. Thanks so much for your help - I truly appreciate it:) PattyG

Subject: Lyr Add: GOODBYE, JIMMY, GOODBYE (from K Linden)
From: Ralph Butts

Hi Patty.... It wasn't so hard to find, after all. Nice song. Good memories...Tiger

GOODBYE, JIMMY—sung by Kathy Linden
Authors unknown to me

    CHORUS
    Goodbye, Jimmy, goodbye,
    Goodbye, Jimmy, goodbye,
    I'll see you again,
    But I don't know when,
    Goodbye, Jimmy, goodbye,

Wind is a-blowin', rain starts to fall,
Train is a-tootin' its long lonesome call,
Wheels are a-clickin' their way down the track,
Countin' the days 'til he's comin' back.

    CHORUS

When he has traveled the land and the sea,
He'll stop his roamin' and come back to me,
Give me a kiss for each tear and each sigh,
'Til then, my Jimmy, my Jimmy, goodbye.

    CHORUS

    (Goodbye, Jimmy, goodbye.)

Ralph - Why thank you, you're most kind:) Goodbye Billy? Boy, that just doesn't sound right, but could be. I've slept some since the 50's!! Connie could be the one - it was definitely a soprano. Thanks again. PattyG

Patty....I remember it and will check my archives. I think it was "Billy", though. Perhaps sung by someone like Connie Stevens......Tiger

Maybe you heard the English version of a famous German song "Goodbye Johnny" sung by Hans Almers (famous actor/singer in the 30s to 60s). It goes like this: e-e-dC--!f-f-ed--!g-g-fe--!a-------!g-gage--!g-gage--!e-e-ed-C!d-------!...

Work song? No....uhm....no, I don't think so.

50's rock and roll - that would be more like it, but we have a rather extensive collection from that era and I've just *never* been able to find it nor does anyone else seem to remember it!! Very frustrating. Oh well, on a scale of 1 to 10, I guess it's not a 10, but you know, I just plain *want to know*!!

Perhaps it is even more from the 40's and is in regard to being away "at war"?

PattyG

Can you provide any more info, is the name Johnny substuted for something else or is it just the chorus? It would fit as a work song, Hugill has , I think a short haul shanty, Goodbye,My Love, Goodbye and the line 'I'll see you again.....' would also fit as a floating verse. It just occurred to me that this might be the perfect place to solve a mystery that has plagued me for some time. When I was about 13, some *&%$@! years ago, I recall hearing a song that made you want to sing along with and, in part, the lyrics were:

Goodbye Johnny goodbye, Goodbye Johnny goodbye,

I'll see you again, But I don't know when,

Goodbye Johnny goodbye.

I have asked *countless* people if they remember this song - and no one does. I'm *sure* this isn't a figment of my imagination!! Can you help? PattyG
