Mike Seeger and Paul Brown sing a song on their album "Way Down in North Carolina" they call'Goodbye, Little Bonnie.' He attributes it to the Ward family of Grayson Co, VA. He uses the same chorus but subs Bonnie for Johnny. He says the song is similar to "More Pretty Girls Than One" and is about a young man rejected by a girl's parents and so he leaves. If this would be the song, I can listen to the lyrics and type them out. Let me know.

Well, I wish I could say I remember all those lyrics now, but I don't! (Just the chorus:) Anyway, I'll at least know what to look for now and maybe be able to find it somewhere. Work song? No....uhm....no, I don't think so.

50's rock and roll - that would be more like it, but we have a rather extensive collection from that era and I've just *never* been able to find it nor does anyone else seem to remember it!! Very frustrating. Oh well, on a scale of 1 to 10, I guess it's not a 10, but you know, I just plain *want to know*!!

Perhaps it is even more from the 40's and is in regard to being away "at war"?

Can you provide any more info, is the name Johnny substuted for something else or is it just the chorus? It would fit as a work song, Hugill has , I think a short haul shanty, Goodbye,My Love, Goodbye and the line 'I'll see you again.....' would also fit as a floating verse. It just occurred to me that this might be the perfect place to solve a mystery that has plagued me for some time. When I was about 13, some *&%$@! years ago, I recall hearing a song that made you want to sing along with and, in part, the lyrics were:

Goodbye Johnny goodbye, Goodbye Johnny goodbye,

I'll see you again, But I don't know when,

Goodbye Johnny goodbye.

I have asked *countless* people if they remember this song - and no one does. I'm *sure* this isn't a figment of my imagination!! Can you help? PattyG
