I've just sent an email to Derek, telling him about Mudcat and asking if he'd like to come on and post a comment himself.

Hope he does.

One of my heroes, too, even if he can be a little curmudgeonly when roused!

The clouds have parted, briefly, and the name "Miles Wootton" appeared in a pillar of flame as the writer of "Portuguee". Could just be an old man's imagination, or a slightly soggy cigar, but someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure who wrote it, it wasn't written by Derek.

I got a letter from him the other week saying that he is as busy as ever and that he and Lady Brimstone are both in the best of health. If any of you UK 'Catters get to see him in the near future, Please tell him that Peter from Perth Sends his regards.

Cheers All,

Bugsy

A correction/variation th "She Loved a Portugee" above.

Verse 2.

When I thought of the two of them, I wanted to run amuck So I followed them to a public house that was called the Dog and Duck They was sitting in the public bar, kissing and holding hands And he was a seducing of her with pints of Babycham

is how I remember it, and how I sing it to this day.

I'm pretty sure Derek didn't write this one, but I'm damned if I can remember who did.

I've known Derek for years, and helped him a few years back to convert the initial draft of his autobiography from WordStar to Word! Needless to say I read it, and, even in it's original form it was hilarious, poignant and fascinating all at once. Buy it via his website as above and give yourself a treat - makes a change from Harry Potter.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: SHE LOVED A PORTUGUESE^^
From: GUEST
Date: 09 Jul 00 - 05:30 AM

I have no idea if Derek wrote this but he sang it on a record I had many years ago.

SHE LOVED A PORTUGUESE

  C Dm G7 F G7 C
I fell in love with a fair young maid that in Camden did reside,
F G7 F G7 C
And I did live in Shoreditch, which was a one-and-fourpenny ride,
G7
But there was a fly in the ointment, as you very soon will perceive,
C Dm G7 F G7 C
'Cos although I loved her oh so well, she loved a Portuguese.

One night I saw them together and I opened my mouth to speak,
But the sight I saw before me made me shut my mouth up quick,
For they were a-sitting there. They was laughing and holding hands,
And he was a-seducing her with pints and Babychams.

He was a nasty piece of work. Gonzales was his name,
And there he was a-dallying with the honour of my dame,
So I resolved to kill him, though I knew it was a sin,
'Cos I didn't like Portuguese in general and in particular I didn't like him.

So I followed him home to his lodgings, which was in Millwall or thereabouts,
And I followed him up an alley and I turned him inside out,
And muttering jealous oaths and things, I bashed him black and bluer,
And I lifted up a manhole cover and I bunged him down a sewer.

Now when she heard what I had done, she made my life a hell,
So just for the sake of peace and quiet, I done her in as well,
And now I'm up before the Beak to answer for my crime.
He said, "I don't like what you did first off, my son, but I'll forgive you the second time."

Here's the moral:
Now love and jealousy are dangerous passions. I should never have intermixed 'em,
And I should have been much wiser, 'cos now I languish here in Brixton,
And it's all for the love of a fair young maid that in Camden did reside.
Yes, it's all for the love of a fair young maid I got thirteen years inside.
^^

Changed from all caps. --JoeClone, 28-Jul-02.

Subject: Lyr Add: WE BOTH HAD A VERY GOOD TIME(Brimstone)^^
From: Bugsy
Date: 04 Jul 00 - 11:40 PM

Here's the other song of Derek's that I sang the other day on Hearme. I hope I've got the verses right but I'm sure there's Someone will correct me!

WE BOTH HAD A VERY GOOD TIME
(Derek Brimstone)

How mamy miles have we wandered side by side
laughing and talking, sometimes we even cried
well the long long road has ended to baby dry your eyes
come here let me kiss you, you know I'm going to miss you
and we both had a very good time

how many bar rooms, how many cities and towns
how many faces - how many sights and sounds
and how many places did you hear me sing my songs
Well laughing or grieving we broke about even
and we both had a very good time

well remember all the good times, forget all about the bad
you know I really really really loved you - i gave you all I had
didn't I always tell you some day this time would come
well I'm sorry my dear, but now that it's here
we both had a very good time

This ain't no time for sadness, It ain't no time for tears,
For happiness just fades away, then it disappears,
You've got many more years than I have - that's why I set you free
So be glad that you met me and baby don't forget me
And we both had a very good time.

So then how many miles, have we wandered side by side,
Laughing and talking, sometimes we even cried.
But the long long road has ended, so baby dry your eyes.
Come here let me kiss you, you know I'm gonna miss you,
And we both had a very good time - I mean
We both had a very good time.

Nice to see Derek Brimstone's name surfacing. he is unquestionably the funniest live performer I have ever seen, albeit slightly "politically incorrect".

Thanks, Bugsy! I'll have to tell bflat, over on his Divorce thread, to take a look at this one. I missed some of the words when you sang it...my HearMe has been scratchy ever since the new download. Both of them were really beautiful songs...nice of you to share them so ably.

Subject: Lyr Add: ALL THOSE SONGS (Derek Brimstone)^^
From: Bugsy
Date: 04 Jul 00 - 02:02 AM

I sang a couple of songs by UK singer/songwriter Derek Brimstone, on hearme today and some of those there wanted the lyrics. Here's the lyrics to "All Those Songs", I'll post the lyrics to the other one "We Both Had A Very Good Time" soon. There's a verse I can't quite remember.

ALL THOSE SONGS
(Derek Brimstone)

All those songs that I sing you
All forgotten, all in vain,
All those melodies, words of loving
Blown away, flown away,
Like dying leaves of fading summertime.

All those promises, did we mean them.
All those castles in the air.
They're all empty now, broken windows.
Old and bad, cold and sad.
How could anybody ever live there.

But today the sun is shining down.
I'm singing in a major key.
And today, well things don't looks so sad,
And nothing seems to worry me.
Til I think of yesterday,

Only to remember, all those daytimes spent in walking.
All those lifetimes loving so.
But the time has passed, my love, for talking.
Too many downs, tears and frowns,
Angry words and sad unhappy faces.

Goodbye Josephine, farewell lady of my life.
We both must go our ways.
Well you had enough time to get to know me,
But you never tried, so it died,
But it doesn't matter anyway.

For today it all seems clear to me,
It's just another song to sing.
Just a futile loving memory,
It really didn't mean a thing.
Til I think of yesterday.

But it's slowly passing, my pieces fall in place again.
Guess I'll spend some more time in minor tuning.
There'll be days of grey, time to pay.
But nothing ever lasts forever so they say.
So they say.....^^

Also, here's Derek's Website. Derek Brimstone
