OK, I'm trying another experiment. Please don't post any messages in this thread, unless you're a techie and can tell me how to change this thing and get it working. Thanks.

I'll have another look later Joe when I am feeling a little more awake. All I can tell you is that I am getting a syntax error reported on line 401 when I download the page but I haven't spotted what the cause is.

You should be able to get this code running ok but I think that you will only get as far as it opening up a window that will say something like requested page not found as to the best of my knowledge, http://www.mudcat.org/popup.html does not exist.

Even if it does exist, for everything to function correctly, it would have to allow for the settings of the parameters that are set on your form.

Jon

Joe, starting in line 438 of this page is a javascript section.
Within this section are some html paragraph marks (<p>). These throw syntax errors. I hope it works if you remove them - at least it should not get worse.

Thanks for the pointer, MudGuard. Trouble is, those paragraph tags aren't part of the message that I posted - they're part of the permanent setup of Mudcat, so I can't delete them. I checked, and there are no paragraph tags in the message I posted.
But I figure if You've got you and Jon on the case, you'll have it figured out in no time. It's beyond my capabilities.
Thanks for your help.

Oh well Joe, you have done some editing since I postd as the syntax errors have moved and now start line 499. Mudguard is quite right is saying that it is the paragraph tags within the script that are doing the damage.

No that failed to. This time you get a } expected error which I can only guess is because the line length is too long.

No I give up, as it is getting confusing now. I think I have the answer as to how to post it though.

Each function must be surrounded by its own pair of script tags and there must be no blank lines between the start and finish of that code section to ensure that a paragraph tag is not inserted,

That would still leave a problem with the "Other()" function which results in a line of 650+ characters so I suspecet a revision of the coding would also be required to make several shorter funtions if the same logic were to be used. This could be achieved by using a coding scheme along these lines:

  function generalchat(){      set channel to #General;      call launch function();  }

function adults(){ if it is the adult button checked set channel to #Adults; call launch function(); else generalchat(); }

function other(){ if it is the make a room button checked set channel to the name in the edit box call launch function; else adults(); }

Problems as of now:

Line 1075: once again, html tag <p> within script section

Line 1077: at character 656 a javascript comment begins, one of the type that ends at the line end. As the Mudcat eats up line feeds in its edit box, the line is longer than the original script line so more stuff than intended is commented out.
remove // launch popup from that line and it might work better.

I did not check whether the scripts are doing what they are supposed to do, I only checked for syntax stuff...
HTH anyway,
MudGuard

Mudguard, the script is tried and tested. It is the code from my hearme Entry page. How do read it when it is all in a jumble like this?

Let's see if I can get it right. I nearly had it last time. The parageraph break was carlessness on my part but I hadn't thought about the effect of the comment. Anyway, here goes.

I failed to notice there was another line with a comment. This time, I have also tried to get it to open a popup.html on my page as I don't know where the Mudcat on is located. According to the Hearme documentation this document should be in the same directory so even if the script works, Im not sure what the effects will be.

[another noble attempt - deleted....]

Oh well, last time has posted without any syntax or missing } errors but it is failing to recongnise the hidden fields in the form HearmeVCC (not an object error). One problem I have here is that we currently have 2 HearmeVCC forms on the page.

Mudguard may well spot an error but I think my last attempt might stand a chance of working if the previous attempt is deleted.

I have activated the flag in Internet Exploder "Internet Options", "Advanced", under "Browsing" "Display a notification about every script error". This tells me where to look.
Then I go to view source and analyze the lines given by the error messages.
Now we have:
line 1100: another <p>
line 1102: at char. 97 starts another // comment
line 1302: at char. 884 another // comment

Now it is 22:15 local time and I go home...

Joe, if you remove from the lines given the parts I marked in red, it should at least give no (or less) script errors: line 1088: <script language="JavaScript"> <P>
(perhaps it is even better to join it with the next line after removing the paragraph tag). line 1090, from char 97: // channel rules
line 1090, from char 656: // launch popup
The scripts in line 1425 seem to be ok (syntactically), but I guess the browsers do not execute them because of the errors in the scripts in 1088 and 1090.

I just noticed that the line numbers change with every posting - they move down 21 lines (due to the entry in the list of posting). After this posting they should appear in 1130 and 1132 instead of 1088 and 1090.

Well, I was trying to follow Mudguard's instructions, but I deleted from the wrong script - I didn't realize there were two, since I could see only one on my monitor at a time. Seems we're making progress. Fewer error messages - but it still doesn't work.

Well, I made a copy of this page and saved it to my hard disk. My last attempt does work provided that the one before is deleted.

There is a problem though as attempting to use the popup.html on my site causes an access denied error and even though the window does open, the channels are not set correctly and other paramaters are ignored. So it appears that the only way to get this experiment to work would involve placing a copy of my version (or a compatible one - there is a Mudcat one somewhere that we have used for Hearme sessions but that does not contain the code required to change the paramaters I change) popup.html in www.mudcat.org/

Well, I deleted the offending previous version. I'd like to test it now, but I don't know if anybody is awake.
give it a try. Just ignore the error message that comes up. If it asks you if you want to run Debug, answer "no."

Joe, it looks like I really did manage to make an error free posting at long last and I THINK that the only remaining error is due to the script trying to access popup.html on my page.

As it does manage to open a chat window and connect to Hearme, this one would allow communication but will follow the default rules of my popup.html which are unworkable (deliberately set that way to attempt to stop any use outside of my entry page which I could control) and every option on this entry form are meaningless.

We have gone as far as we can go. The only way to prove this experiment does require a popup.html, as mentioned in a previous post, located in its proper place.

Using my netscape (in which cookies are fully disabled, so I'm a guest) I clicked on the grey box, was told I needed a download, which netscape retrieved for me. I was told to re-start netscape, I did, & it appears to work, but the typing box is seperate. Only problem: nobody there but me, so I can't tell if I could hear anyone.

I also touched something w/my sleeve on the

BK, not too techie at all in html, but I thought I'd try an experiment. When I tried in IE, I only got various error messages, as the others did, 'n tried the Netscape immediately afterwards so I sorta doubt somebody finished fixing it. Now I wonder if I go back to IE, w/cookies allowed, will it also worrk?? Addendum: just talked to john in brisbane, but it appears I can only talk for a few seconds at a time
