Indigo - I believe there are only 3 verses plus the chorus - here's what I have:

SLANEY VALLEY

Asthoreen Bawn, when first we met,
I can see the roses yet,
And the light that lit your little eyes of blue.
I can hear your sweet voice say,
Welcome as the flowers in May
In a dream, and when I whispered back to you.

CHORUS: Will you come with me, asthore,
When the summer day is o’er
And the rooks are winging homeward in the sky?
When the mountains fade away
On a field of gold and grey,
We'll go home to Slaney Valley, you and I.

Asthoreen Bawn, when you said yes,
Brimful was my happiness.
Summer sped as ne'er before on flying feet.
Never shone the moon so bright
In a starry cape of night.
Never sang the thrushes so divinely sweet. CHO.

Asthoreen Bawn, for years you've been
In my heart it's rightful queen,
Ever loving, ever tender, ever true.
Like the sun your smile has shone,
Gladdening all it glowed upon,
As it did when first I whispered back to you. CHO.

Enjoy, I would be interested in any additional verses as well.

Thanks Jimmy, I have the same verses, although somewhat different. This is the version I sing.

SLANEY VALLEY

Asthoreen Bawn, when first we met,
I can see the roses yet,
And the lovelight in your happy eyes of blue,
I can hear your sweet voice say,
Welcome as the flowers in May,
As it did when first I whispered back to you.

CHORUS: Will you come with me asthore,
when the summer days are o'er,
And the rooks are winging homeward in the sky.
Where the mountains fade away,
on a field of gold and gray,
We'll go home to SLANEY VALLEY, you and I.

Asthoreen Bawn when you said yes,
brimful was my happiness
And the summer sped as if on flying feet,
Never shown the moon so bright,
In a cape of starry light,
Never sang the thrushes so divinely sweet. CHORUS

Asthoreen Bawn, for years you've been,
Of my heart, it's earthly King,
Ever tender, ever loving, ever true,
But your smile from Earth has gone,
Gladdening all it glowed upon,
As it did when first I whispered back to you. CHORUS

I used your spelling for Asthoreen Bawn as I was never sure of mine. (Storeen Bawn)

The verses are the same, just the wording switched about. My copy came from a friend who sings in Wexford. I am wondering how such a beautiful ballad had not been added to the DT.

Thanks again Jimmy, I will probably blend the wording of the 2 versions.

By the way, if you put a small br in the center of the <> it should make a new line. I had that problem too, drove me batty.

Regards

Indigo Blue

It would probably be "a stoirin ban" ([Oh] fair treasure); is anybody able to make a midi of the tune?  It's been mentioned here a number of times in the past, but I've never heard it and would certainly like to.

Thanks Malcolm:

The song is well worth seeking out. It is one of the most beautiful Irish ballads I know. What is very strange is that I have never heard it sung anyplace besides the Wexford area. Not in the town of Wexford, but in the country pubs.
I know it is not unusual for certain songs to remain popular in the area they came from but this song is just too beautiful to stay in Wexford County. I wish I knew how to write music but like so many of us, it is all in my head.
Thanks again for the correct Irish.

Hi Indigo, thanks for the
tip, I just learned it recently also. Malcolm is reght about the spelling, funny how you lose the gaelic when you haven't used it for close to 40 years.

By the way I and some friends used to sing the song years ago in the Toronto area but I did hear it for the first time in the county Wexford. I agree that it is a beauty.

I have a recording of it credited to Larry Cunningham, from a tape sold by a Canadian company - various Irish artists, including Brendab Shine, Gene Stuart, Dermot Hegarty, Danny Doyle, Sean O'Se, Brian Coll, Dermot O'Brien, Philomena Begley, Barleycorn, D.J. Curtin, and Frank McCaffrey. The song on the tape is performed in kind of an American country and western style, which makes it sound a little strange, but the lyrics are almost the same as those posted by Indigo, except for the last verse.

A stoirin ban, for years you've been,
In my heart its rightful Queen,
Ever loving, ever tender, ever true,
On our hearts your smile did shine,
Gladdening all it glowed upon,
As it did when first I whispered back to you.

I should have made it clear that by "credited to", I mean the performer on this recording is Larry Cunningham, song by Keogh.

Thanks for all the input Alice, I will try to find the recording you mention.
I first heard the song in Michael Furlong's Oak Tree Lounge in Foulksmills, Co. Wexford in the summer of l968 and it haunted me until I learned to sing it myself.
I did change one word from the original version that was taught to me from 'cove' to 'cape', (of starry light), but the rest is just as I received it from my friend. Michael Furlong is gone but I'll bet the song is still being sung any night there is music.

Well, since this recording does have some differences compared to the other verses you supplied, I will go ahead and give you the remainder. The tape is called "Golden Irish Favorites" produced by Gateway Records, (C-1305). You can probably get it through the Mudcat link to CDNow (click on catfish/banjo logo at top of page).

Please excuse my delay for saying 'thank you' to all who have been so helpful. I have been out of town for a few days.
I think I have the 'best' of the song now. 'On a starry coat of night', sounds lovely, but I have decided to stick with 'cove of starry light'. (It's hard to break old habits.)

Alice's version is the correct one. Here in Wexford its pronounced Storeen Bawn, were not very good at the Irish here all us Normans Welsh, and Vikings. We ran the Irish out of here hundreds of years ago.To the best of my knowledge the song was recorded first by a family group from the Kilmore area of Wexford, The Kinsellas, sometime in the 1960s. The song was written by a local man called Keogh, father of the famous hurling star and Guinness rep, of the 50s and 60s Padge Keogh

Years ago, my uncle had made tape recordings of songs he heard in pubs as he travelled around Ireland. However, he didn't know the titles. His recordings included only the first verse and chorus of Slaney Valley, and, as you might imagine, the quality of the recording was not that good.

Although I couldn't quite make out the lyrics, I fell in love with the tune. Finally, after being certain of the word "asthore", I did a wild card search and was rewarded with this thread, with the title and the lyrics to the song.

This was a lovely way to start my day.

It is with great sadness this weekend in the County of Wexford and especially Enniscorthy where the Slaney waters flow as we saw the passing of Padge Keogh as mentioned by the Mariner "The song was written by a local man called Keogh, father of the famous hurling star and Guinness rep, of the 50s and 60s Padge Keogh".

I've being playing this tune since I first learned the accordion in the early 70's but not until yesterday evening did I learn as a result of a conversation over a pint reminiscing the life & times of Padge and his hurling career that it was his Father (I think he was also named Padge) that penned the lyrics (not too sure about the tune; perhaps someone else could clarify that).

Go ndeanaí Dia trócaire ar a anam dílís.

Loved reading all the to-ing and fro-ing re the words of this most beautiful of songs. I just googled the name and found a treasure of chat! ( + of course the words) I first heard the song sung by my husbands young cousin, Noreen Gallagher, in 1975. Her brother is Patrick Gallagher of Goats Dont Shave fame. He wrote the words and music to Hills of Donegal and the Glen Vey Clearances

I first heard the beautiful "Slaney Valley" being sung by the late Jim Crosbie of Ballingly near Foulksmills. I was a youngster then it the 1960s, but the beautiful tune has stayed with me. In a search for the lyrics I found this wonderful discussion thread, and was brought back to my childhood when "Indigo" mentioned hearing the song being sung in "The Oak Tree" in Foulksmills. Do you remember Jim?

Thanks for all your help.

Hello, I've just come across this website whilst searching for the correct words for this beautiful song.
For all those who love Irish music, you will surely want to add this CD to your collection. The one I own is produced under the Excelsior label, # EXM2 2694.
Titled "50 Irish Sing-a-long Favourites." - by the Sean O'Neill Band.
This is a great hand clapping, foot stomping group of songs put together in 14 (4.5min)medleys. The only thing missing is a Sing-a-long sheet. ... I'm currently trying to put one together for my own enjoyment as well as the possibility of using it to entertain at local Senior's Care Facilities. ... I'm also the Director of a 20 person Glee Club with piano back-up. We sing no sad songs.
I should mention I am NOT Irish myself but, I am married to one of the sweetest colleens from Ballymagroarty this past 52 yrs. BallyM is a wee hamlet on the NE corner of Derry. As for me? I originate from the Isle of Wight but, I always knew I wanted to marry an Irish girl ... I have never regretted my choice.

PS: If I knew how, I would run a copy of my disc and share it with you folk ... I have all the necessary equipment, but my computer skills are limited.

Does anyone have a date for the writing of the words (and music) of the song?

I'd guess (from Padge Keogh Jr's age), that his father was born around 1900-10, which means the lyrics would've been composed some time in the mid-20th Century. I'm assuming that PT Kinsella's melody was composed earlier.

I'm studying the Gaelic/Irish of Co. Wexford. Despite Norman influences mentioned by Mariner, there were 79 native irish-speakers over 70 y.o. in Co. Wexford in the 1911 census, with small clusters around Fethard, and Kilcomb (near Comolin) - Royal Irish Academy survey by Garret Fitzgerald (1984). The English of Co. Wexford is replete with extant Irish words - ever-diminishing due to globalised mass media.

Don't know why I came to check out this thread again, but I want to tell "guest Voice" that I did not know Jim Crosbie, but was often a guest at the "Farm House" owned by Joan Crosbie and her husband, whose name escapes me. The last I heard, the eldest son, Francis and his wife own it............Anyway, The song was sung so many times in the "Oak Tree Lounge" , where I also stayed once in a while, and "White's Pub" by Mickey Sinnott that I would almost bet that the owners of either place know it's history.   Everyone who heard it seemed curious about it at the time.........

Good luck and thanks again to all the guys and gals that gave me so much pleasure with all the information given over the past years.

Blessings all

WorldCat.org shows that the National Library of Ireland has a copy of sheet music titled THE VALLEY OF THE SLANEY by Maire O'Neill (Dublin: Glenside, 1963).

I don't know what connection, if any, this has with the song you are looking for.

Hi Jim

"Glenside" was the record label of the Walton's publishing house, IIRC.

Interestingly, When I linked to that NLI record, it listed "What part of old Ireland do you come from?" as a similar item, ascribing it to Leo Maguire (of "Gypsy Rover" fame). I didn't know that!

Margaret B

I learned this in Killurin by the Slaney

We sang it on Tops in the 70's and we heard it in the pubs when aunties came home from England I changed some to the words we sang and I forget a lot of 2nd verse

SLANEY VALLEY

Storeen Bawn, when first we met,
I can see the roses yet,
And the light that lit your happy eyes of blue,
I can hear your sweet voice say,
Welcome as the flowers in May,
As it did when first I whispered back to you.

CHORUS: Will you come with me asthore,
when the summer days are o'er,
And the rooks are winging homeward in the sky.
When the mountains fade away,
on a field of gold and gray,
We'll go home to SLANEY VALLEY, you and I.

Storeen Bawn when you said yes,
brimful was my happiness
And the summer sped as if on flying feet,
Never shone the moon so bright,
On a starry, starry night,
Never sang the thrushes so divinely sweet. CHORUS

Storeen Bawn, for years you've been,
In my heart, it's earthly Queen,
Ever tender, ever loving, ever true,
But your smile from Earth has gone,
Gladdening all it glowed upon,
As it did when first I whispered back to you. CHORUS

Hello Voice;
I am rather late with this answer but it is so long since I have had a computer at home that the time just slipped by. I remember the name you mention but not the face. Sorry.
I remember Michael Furlong and so many others. The one that I will never forget was a little old fella that we all called "Dicky Cloon", but was in fact named Richard Cullen. The young men in the pub had a long piece of wire to which they had attached the bath-tub plug. They then told Dicky Cloon that it was a mike and he should sing into it and I would record it on my recorder. I felt so bad that they were teasing him so, but he was loving every moment of it. Dicky sang his heart out and didn't want to stop.   So many wonderful, fun filled nights spent at the Oak Tree and White's. Sean White was the All Ireland whistler and he was lovely to hear. Celestine White was a lovely dancer also.   I will close for now as I will go on forever ......... and you know what it's like in Foulksmills anyway. God bless.............I hope you will see this sometime soon.

A couple of things about this song. First the correct spelling of the first two words is "Storín bán" pronounces - "store-een bawn". Storín is a term of endearment that a parent might use with a child or lovers with each other. Bán means "white" or in this context may refer to light colouring of the lover's hair or skin.

Padge Keogh was one of Wexford's greatest hurlers of the 50s and 60's, winning All-Ireland medals. His father wrote this song. The Keogh home was just outside of Enniscorthy on a height looking down on the Slaney river. He was a gentleman and I had the privilege of being a guest in his home.

In the 70s this song was a favourite of the landlady of a pub in London W11. If a longing came on her to hear Slaney Valley she had the wherewithall to reject every other choice on the jukebox till SV came on. I came to detest that song.

Hello Guest
You were very blessed to have so many wonderful, talented relatives, and I felt so lucky to become a part of so many wonderful, musical evenings. The gatherings after the pub closed for the night, were great fun. The first time I ever sang in public was in White's .   At the kind insisting of Sean White, and when I began singing, THE ORANGE AND THE GREEN. I thought my singing must have been very bad as every face became void of a smile as soon as I sang the first, few words. A few forced smile s re turned as they felt sorry for me. Later, a friend explained that it was not a good choice. I will always be grateful to Celestine White for making me feel at ease, and welcome after my blunder. ( Everyone clapped, I'm sure it was because I looked pitiful, and perhaps somewhat scared. ?? ?? )
This thread has given me so much joy! Thank all who have responded over the many, long years,........and God bless the Mudcat Cafe, and it' s wonderful creators!
