I am wondering how such a beautiful ballad had not been added to the DT. Thanks again Jimmy, I will probably blend the wording of the 2 versions. The song is well worth seeking out. It is one of the most beautiful Irish ballads I know. What is very strange is that I have never heard it sung anyplace besides the Wexford area. Not in the town of Wexford, but in the country pubs.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Slaney Valley lyrics please From: Alice Date: 07 Jul 00 - 08:26 PM I have a recording of it credited to Larry Cunningham, from a tape sold by a Canadian company - various Irish artists, including Brendab Shine, Gene Stuart, Dermot Hegarty, Danny Doyle, Sean O'Se, Brian Coll, Dermot O'Brien, Philomena Begley, Barleycorn, D.J. Curtin, and Frank McCaffrey. The song on the tape is performed in kind of an American country and western style, which makes it sound a little strange, but the lyrics are almost the same as those posted by Indigo, except for the last verse.

I first heard the song in Michael Furlong's Oak Tree Lounge in Foulksmills, Co. Wexford in the summer of l968 and it haunted me until I learned to sing it myself. I did change one word from the original version that was taught to me from 'cove' to 'cape', (of starry light), but the rest is just as I received it from my friend. Here in Wexford its pronounced Storeen Bawn, were not very good at the Irish here all us Normans Welsh, and Vikings. We ran the Irish out of here hundreds of years ago.To the best of my knowledge the song was recorded first by a family group from the Kilmore area of Wexford, The Kinsellas, sometime in the 1960s. However, he didn't know the titles. His recordings included only the first verse and chorus of Slaney Valley, and, as you might imagine, the quality of the recording was not that good. Although I couldn't quite make out the lyrics, I fell in love with the tune. Finally, after being certain of the word "asthore", I did a wild card search and was rewarded with this thread, with the title and the lyrics to the song. This was a lovely way to start my day. I've being playing this tune since I first learned the accordion in the early 70's but not until yesterday evening did I learn as a result of a conversation over a pint reminiscing the life & times of Padge and his hurling career that it was his Father (I think he was also named Padge) that penned the lyrics (not too sure about the tune; perhaps someone else could clarify that). In a search for the lyrics I found this wonderful discussion thread, and was brought back to my childhood when "Indigo" mentioned hearing the song being sung in "The Oak Tree" in Foulksmills. For all those who love Irish music, you will surely want to add this CD to your collection. The one I own is produced under the Excelsior label, # EXM2 2694. Titled "50 Irish Sing-a-long Favourites." - by the Sean O'Neill Band. This is a great hand clapping, foot stomping group of songs put together in 14 (4.5min)medleys. The only thing missing is a Sing-a-long sheet. ... I'm currently trying to put one together for my own enjoyment as well as the possibility of using it to entertain at local Senior's Care Facilities. ... I'm also the Director of a 20 person Glee Club with piano back-up. We sing no sad songs. I should mention I am NOT Irish myself but, I am married to one of the sweetest colleens from Ballymagroarty this past 52 yrs. BallyM is a wee hamlet on the NE corner of Derry. As for me? I originate from the Isle of Wight but, I always knew I wanted to marry an Irish girl ... I have never regretted my choice. PS: If I knew how, I would run a copy of my disc and share it with you folk ... I have all the necessary equipment, but my computer skills are limited. |

I'd guess (from Padge Keogh Jr's age), that his father was born around 1900-10, which means the lyrics would've been composed some time in the mid-20th Century. I'm assuming that PT Kinsella's melody was composed earlier. I'm studying the Gaelic/Irish of Co. Wexford. Despite Norman influences mentioned by Mariner, there were 79 native irish-speakers over 70 y.o. in Co. Wexford in the 1911 census, with small clusters around Fethard, and Kilcomb (near Comolin) - Royal Irish Academy survey by Garret Fitzgerald (1984). The English of Co. The last I heard, the eldest son, Francis and his wife own it............Anyway, The song was sung so many times in the "Oak Tree Lounge" , where I also stayed once in a while, and "White's Pub" by Mickey Sinnott that I would almost bet that the owners of either place know it's history. Everyone who heard it seemed curious about it at the time......... I remember the name you mention but not the face. Sorry. I remember Michael Furlong and so many others. The one that I will never forget was a little old fella that we all called "Dicky Cloon", but was in fact named Richard Cullen. The young men in the pub had a long piece of wire to which they had attached the bath-tub plug. They then told Dicky Cloon that it was a mike and he should sing into it and I would record it on my recorder. I felt so bad that they were teasing him so, but he was loving every moment of it. Dicky sang his heart out and didn't want to stop. So many wonderful, fun filled nights spent at the Oak Tree and White's. Sean White was the All Ireland whistler and he was lovely to hear. Celestine White was a lovely dancer also. I will close for now as I will go on forever ......... and you know what it's like in Foulksmills anyway. First the correct spelling of the first two words is "Storín bán" pronounces - "store-een bawn". Storín is a term of endearment that a parent might use with a child or lovers with each other. Bán means "white" or in this context may refer to light colouring of the lover's hair or skin. Padge Keogh was one of Wexford's greatest hurlers of the 50s and 60's, winning All-Ireland medals. His father wrote this song. The Keogh home was just outside of Enniscorthy on a height looking down on the Slaney river. He was a gentleman and I had the privilege of being a guest in his home. |

The gatherings after the pub closed for the night, were great fun. The first time I ever sang in public was in White's . At the kind insisting of Sean White, and when I began singing, THE ORANGE AND THE GREEN. I thought my singing must have been very bad as every face became void of a smile as soon as I sang the first, few words. A few forced smile s re turned as they felt sorry for me. Later, a friend explained that it was not a good choice. I will always be grateful to Celestine White for making me feel at ease, and welcome after my blunder. ( Everyone clapped, I'm sure it was because I looked pitiful, and perhaps somewhat scared. ?? ?? ) This thread has given me so much joy!
