I need the cords for the song "I Want a Girl ( just like the Girl that married Dear old Dad)" The second part of the chorus that goes to the minors is baffling us.

Words and music are in the Levy sheet music collection (Mudcat's Links).

Hi, Fiddler - you can click here: I WANT A GIRL (JUST LIKE THE GIRL THAT MARRIED DEAR OLD DAD) for the sheet music, but I don't know how you can get away from those baffling chords in the chorus. I haven't been able to find an easy arrangement.

Well, this one isn't too bad:

I WANT A GIRL
(words William Dillon, music Harry Von Tilzer, 1911)

  C C7 F C D7 G7 C C7
I want a girl, just like the girl that married dear old Dad

F C A7 D7 G7
She was a pearl and the only girl that Daddy ever had,

C G7
A good old-fashioned girl with heart so true

Am F7 E B7
One who loves nobody else but you

C C7 F C D7 G7 C G7
I want a girl, just like the girl that married dear old Dad

If you want that set out by measures, it's:

C | C7 |F | - | C | D7 G7 | C | C7

F | - | C | A7 | D7 | - | G7 | -

C | - | G7 | -

Am | F7 | E B7 | G7 | -

C | C C7 | F | - | C | D7 G7 | C G7

Philip Wylie remarked somewhere that that song was the only socially acceptable mention of the Oedipus complex in American culture.

UK Mudcatters will be familiar with The Royle Family. Jim Royle (played by Ricky Tomlinson) sings his banjo version of this old song in one episode. It's probably on YouTube

There seem to be a page missing from Levy's copy of I WANT A GIRL (JUST LIKE THE GIRL THAT MARRIED DEAR OLD DAD).

Here's the same song at Indiana University's collection.

thanks for the chords for this great old song.

Rolf Harris used a parody as a jingle for advertising British Paints many years ago.

I have had my autoharp for 8 weeks now and it was great to find these chords. only had to make one adjustment as mine is a 15 chord harp. the E7 works fine for the E and I just left out the B7 and it is fine.

cheers from Western Australia

and thank you for this wonderful website :]
