Subject: Lyr Add: MEN / NO ONE HERE BUT MEN From: GUEST,chris.bachalo@sympatico.ca Date: 06 Jul 00 - 07:45 PM Anyone know the writer of the following song and who has recorded it recently? I heard it a couple of years ago on the radio, and have been looking for it. http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=3947 MEN It's great to be on a ship with men And sail across the sea-o We don't know where we'll land or when But it's great to be with men 'Cause men can sweat and men can stink And no one seems to care-o We'll throw the dishes in the sink And clog the sink with hair-o Men, men, men, it's a ship filled with men So batten down the ladies room, There's no one here but men There's men above, there's men below There's men down in the galley there's Mitch and Dave and Jim and Bob And one guy we call Sally Men, men, men, it's ship all filled with men You'll never have to lift the seat There's no one here but men We're men and friends until the end And none of us are missus At night we'll sleep in separate beds And blow each other kisses Men, men, men, it's a ship all filled with men So throw your rubbers overboard There's no one here but men filename[ SHIPMEN JY |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Rob the Ranter Date: 07 Jul 00 - 03:44 AM If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area check out The radio srtation at 97.3 KLIC ir "Alice" Thier Sarah and Vinnie morning show uses it for a game called Chick Quiz/Dude Quiz. They also play a version for women. Mind you,The humor on the programme is assenine to say the least and has a tendency to grate on one's nerves. Needless to say I don't listen to them any more. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Aug 05 - 07:15 PM Do we have correct and definitive lyrics for this song? How 'bout a tune? Anybody know of any recordings that may be available? I know it's on a Martin Mull CD called I'm Everyone I Ever Loved, but I think that CD is out of production. Somebody above said they thought Loudon Wainwritht III recorded the song - he does have a song with that title on his History CD, but I think it's a different song. I think I've heard it sung by the inimitable Ed Silberman, but that's another story.... -Joe Offer- Here's a transcription of the song, posted at http://www.compleatsteve.com/bits/men.htm: Men (Martin Mull and Steve Martin) (Group of men singing in the background) Men, men, men, men Men, men, men, men... It's great to be on a ship with men and sail across the sea, oh, We don't know where we'll land or when, but it's great to be with men. 'Cause men can sweat and men can stink and no one seems to care, oh, We'll throw the dishes in the sink and clog the drain with hair, oh! (And clog the drain with hair, oh!) Men, men, men, We're a ship all filled with men, So batten down the ladies' room, there's no one here but men! Men, men, men, men Men, men, men, men |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Stewie Date: 18 Aug 05 - 08:38 PM Joe, you are right: the Wainright song of the same title is totally different - I just checked the 'History' album. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Aug 05 - 01:35 AM Thanks, Stewie. Several years ago, I decided I didn't like anything Loudon III did except "Dead Skunk," so I put him in deep storage - he did a nice job in The Aviator, though. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Mark Cohen Date: 19 Aug 05 - 01:40 AM Yeah, but it was fun to see him in those old M*A*S*H episodes. I believe I recall seeing Martin Mull do the song on TV. Of course, my belief is stronger than my recall, these days. I am sure, though, that the line was "And none of us are sissies." Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 05 - 01:22 PM Martin Mull wrote a lot of wonderful songs, many of which he sang on his old TV show. (Well, it wasn't old when it was on, I guess, but I've only caught an episode or two on some cable channel and have no idea when the original show aired or for how long or on what channel or whether it can still be found on cable. I'd certainly buy a DVD of this show if one could be had!) Martin's songs are real gems! The only one that comes to mind right now is this one: "NORMAL I'm tired of rock an' rolling. Let's get married, honey, let's go bowlin', Throw away our pot an' acid, Spend the weekend at Lake Placid. We'll show the folks back home we're not deranged:* Why don't you and I get normal for a change! Chorus: Let's you and I get normal, It doesn't need to be so formal ... Oh, crap! Brain fart in progress! Anyway, here's a link to the track list for Martin's CD "Mulling It Over," which includes that song. http://www.fretplay.com/review/m/mull_martin/discography-CD-B000009S3F-Mulling-I Tracks: 1: Normal 2: Ventriloquist Love 3: Simple Carpenter 4: Licks off of Records 5: Miami 6: Margie the Midget 7: Dueling Tubas 8: Jesus Christ, Football Star 9: Flexible 10: Partly Marion 11: Do the Dog 12: Santafly 13: Straight Talk About the Blues 14: Ukelele Blues 15: Jesus Is Easy 16: Eggs 17: Dancing in the Nude 18: Santa Doesn't Cop Out on Dope 19: Noses Run in My Family 20: Hors d'Oeuvre I'll post the full lyrics to "Normal" in a separate thread, if that hasn't already been done somewhere in the forum or the DT. (It's such a good song, I'll be surprised if I don't find it here already.) Genie |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Anyone know the writer of MEN song? From: Genie Date: 19 Aug 05 - 01:36 PM Still can't find the lyrics to "Normal" here or on the web yet, but the chorus is coming back to me. Let's you and me get normal. It doesn't need to be so formal. We'll eat meat and mashed potatoes, Cut our hair so folks won't hate us. ... ... Let's you and I get normal for a change. (One of the verses has the lines: I'll have to beg your pardon, Let's go out and plant a garden, ... ... ... ... Plant some carrots and tomatoes, And if anything comes up, we'll join the Grange. Let's you and me get normal for a change. |

From: jeffp Date: 19 Aug 05 - 02:06 PM Here's what I can remember off the top of my head: NORMAL Martin Mull INTRO Why'd we have to get so hip? Why'd we have to take that trip? Honey… You look dumb in dungarees and so do I. Go put on your nicest dress and I'll put on my tie. Here's why……. I'm tired of rock n' rollin' Let's get married honey, let's go bowlin' Throw away our pot and acid Spend the weekend at Lake Placid It's hard to live in this town if you're strange What say you and I get normal for a change CHORUS What say you and I get normal We don't have to be that formal We'll just sit and watch TV like others do We'll eat meat and mashed potatoes Cut our hair so folks don't hate us Life is nuts enough just livin' here with you (There's another verse in here, but I can't for the life of me remember any of it.) BRIDGE It's gonna change us honey, sexually From now on, we'll just be once-a-weekers It's gonna change us honey, even musically We'll get our records through the mail, Buy a set of lousy speakers (unintelligible stuff in background) So if you'll beg my pardon I'm goin' out and start a garden It'll just be small potatoes Some lettuce and tomatoes And if either one comes up, we'll join the Grange What say you and I get normal for a change Repeat Chorus Life is nuts enough just livin' here with you, it's true Livin' here with you and Bobby McGoo |
