Thanks for finding that! It was apparently uploaded by a blogger who felt it was a nice addition to a a post about baseball. This is a slightly more direct link to the audio file: http://www.fusion45.com/wp-content/uploads/audio/2008/08_The_Ball_Game.mp3.

Thats where I heard it. We get it in the UK on digital broadcasts about 18 months after the US broadcast. I record and listen maybe a month later. Hence the timing.

Actually I first became aware of the song in NZ. The singer there told of this achetypal gospel song about baseball. He did say it was only the quality of the song that stopped it being corny. It stuck in my mind for 5 or more years when I was prompted to write a gospel parody myself. I was pleased with the result.
And pleasantly surprised to hear it sung with such honesty and love for the genre.

Win Win.

And I LOVE ketchup too...........

Life is a Ball Game

Life is a ballgame, Bein' played each day
Life is a ballgame, Everybody can play
Jesus is standin', at home plate
He's awaitin' for you there, Life is a ballgame, but
You've got to play it fair.
(Chorus)

First base is temptation, The second base is sin
Third base tribulation, If you pass you can make it on in
Ol' man Solomon is the umpire, And Satan is pitchin the game
He'll do his best to strike you out, Keep playin' just the same.

Daniel was the first to bat, You know he prayed three times a day
When Satan threw him a fast ball, You know he hit it anyway
Job came in the next inning, Satan struck him in every way,
But Job he hit a home run, And came on in that day.

(Chorus)

Prayer will be your strong bat, To hit at Satan's ball
And when you start to swing it, You've got to give it your all in all
Faith will be your catcher, On him you can depend
And Jesus is standing at Home Plate, Just waitin for you to come in.

Moses is standin' on the side lines, Just waitin to be called
And when he parted the Red Sea, He gave Christ his all-in-all
John came in the last inning, When the game was almost don
Then God gave John a vision, And he knew he'd all ready won.

(Chorus)

The Ball Game / Life is a Ball Game
by Sister Wynona Carr © Published: April 8, 1952
on the CD Dragnet for Jesus

(variations as sung on Garrison Keillor's show)

Daniel was off to bat first, You know he prayed three times a day
Satan pitched him a fast ball, You know he hit it anyway
Job is up to bat next, Satan pitched him in every way,
But Job he hit him a home run, And came on in that day.

You know prayer is the strong bat, To hit at Satan's ball
And when you start to swing it, You've got to give it your all in all
Faith gonna be your catcher, On him you can depend
And Jesus is standing at Home Plate, He's awaitin for you to come in.

Moses is on the side lines, waitin to be called
And when he parted the Red Sea, Well he knew (graft's??) all-in-all
John came in the last inning, When the game was almost done
Then God gave John a vision, And he knew he'd already won.

OK, I Googled the first line and here's what i got:

Life is a ballgame, being played each day
Life is a ballgame, everybody can play
You know Jesus is standing at the Home Plate
He's waiting for you there
Life is a Ballgame, but you've got to play it fair

First base is Temptation, Second base is Sin
Third base is Tribulation, if you pass you can make it in
Oh man Solomon is the Umpire, Satan is pitching the game
He'll do his best to strike you out, keep trying just the same

You know Daniel's up to bat first, he said I pray three times a day
You know Satan pitched him a fastball, he hit it anyway
Job is up to bat next, tried to strike him out every way
But Job hit a home run, and he came on in that day

You know prayer is a strong bat, to hit at Satan's ball.
Well when you'all start swinging, you got to give it your all and all
You know Fate's gonna be your catcher, and on him you can depend
Cause Jesus' standing at the Home Plate, he's waiting for you to come in

Well you know Moses is on the sideline, waiting to be called
Well the day he parted the Red Sea, he knew Christ all in all
Now John came in the ninth Inning, and the game was almost done
God gave John a vision, and we knew we'd already won!

At home (I'm at work) I believe I have lyrics to "Life is a Ball Game," I wrote down from an old recording by Sister Wynona somebody.
It begins:
"Life is a ballgame, being played each day.
Life is a ballgame, each and everyboby can play..
(this line I've forgotten)
"Life is a ballgame, but you've got to play it fair."
FYI, Job hits a home run.
Tim, If this is the song you're looking for I will search for the lyrics.

Here's the song Marsha referred to, but I don't think it's the one Tim requested (8 years ago!), because it doesn't mention the devil or Job. Also, there's no way it could be mistaken for a song from the 30s.

Lyrics copied from http://members.aol.com/guitarron/songs/homerun.txt
That page also has chords and some tabs.
There is a sound sample at http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?p=1006648&item_no=CD5129
There is a slightly different version at http://www.acadisc.com/sweetdel.htm

HOME RUN
Geoff Moore and Steven Curtis Chapman, 1995.

The lights go on, another game day.
I grabbed my bat and headed for the plate,
But the first pitch was a curve and I was done. (Strike one!)
I stepped out of the box, looked the pitcher in the eye
You could read his lips, "Hey punk, you're mine."
So I gave him a wink and said "Let's see what you can do." (Strike two!)

CHORUS: Gotta keep my eye on the ball,
Swing straight and true and follow through.
Don't be afraid, whatever the call,
Because we're never alone.
Our coach is there to cheer us on.
Well, it's the wind up; here comes that ball.
You gotta pray and swing, watch it till it's going, going, it's gone.
Home, home, home, run

(We need a home run.)
You know life can be like a baseball game.
We're on the same team, but we're not all the same.
That's why we've got to learn to play together.
I didn't join this team to sit on the bench.
I'm going deep, swinging for the fence.
I got some friends on base I gotta get home. CHORUS

BRIDGE: We are not the first to play this game or stand over this plate
We are surrounded by their legacy, like they're sittin' in the stands.
I can see them waving their hands
Saying, "Go, go all the way!"

[Recorded by Geoff Moore and The Distance on the album "Home Run."]

LIFE IS A BALLGAME
Sister Wynona Carr

(I use this first verse as a chorus:)

Life is a ballgame bein' played each day.
Life is a ballgame ev'rybody can play.
Jesus standing at home plate is a-waiting for you there.
Life is a ballgame, but you've got to play it fair.

The first base is temptation; the second base is sin.
The third base tribulation; if you pass you can make it in.
Ol' man Solomon is the umpire and Satan pitchin' the game.
He'll do his best to strike you out, but keep playin' just the same.

Daniel's up to bat first; you know he prayed three times a day.
Yes, Satan pitched him a fast ball, but he hit it anyway.
Job is up to bat next; Satan struck him in every way,
But Job hit a home run and he came on in that day.

Prayer is our strong bat to hit at Satan's ball,
And when you start to swing it, you got to give it your all in all.
Faith's gonna be your catcher, and on him you can depend,
For Jesus standing at home plate, and he's waiting for you to come in.

Moses is on the sidelines waiting to be called.
The day he parted the Red Sea, he gave Christ his all-in-all.
Then John came in the ninth inning and the game was almost done,
Then God gave John a vision and he knew he'd already won.

Enjoy
^^

"Home Run" by Geoff Moore And The Distance is a great Christian baseball song with the line "life is like a baseball game" in it, Jesus as the coach, etc. It's new though, published in 1995 or 1996, on EMI Christian Music. I have it on the WOW-1996 CD. The words didn't come with it though, so if you can't find them anywhere else, let me know and I'll try to get them down for you.

Does anyone know the lyrics to this song, and I may have gotten the title slightly wrong. It is of religious nature, with the Devil pitching, Jesus coaching (as I recall), and Job at the plate. I heard it on the radio at the opening of the ball season, and by the sound of the recording it may have been from the thirties or so.

Thanks, as always.
