As PeterT says, let's toot our horns a bit more or do it for one another. Here's a link to a page with Saturday photos from the Mariposa Festival where Rick Fielding opened for Gordon Lightfoot to an audience of thousands. It takes a while to laod, but it is a grand picure of him in actual performance and worth the wait.

And, here is a nice picture of him with a write up at the same site.

"Jesse James" did not need to shout or be as snide as he was, but his point is well taken. It seems to me that folk festivals should be about promoting a better society, not about providing advertising opportunities for the greediest corporations.

I was a member of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival's Board of Directors for several years and despite years of financial difficulties, we had strict guidelines about which corporations we would accept sponsorships from. Due to their exploitative policies, the Royal Bank, and the other major banks were among those we would not consider. I understand that the policy still remains in effect.

I'm saddened that Mariposa and its artists, from Gordon Lightfoot to Rick Fielding and the rest, would allow itself and themselves to be used by the Royal Bank and would indded like to hear from Rick on the subject.

I did not get two shots in. I merely said there was validity in the issue raised by Jesse James. I pointed out my own personal experience with an organization that took its early inspiration from Mariposa and said that I'd like to hear what Rick had to say.

HOLY SHIT, I look EXACTLY like WILLIAM SHATNER!

For what it's worth (and I know this is corny) the folks that I revere like Leadbelly, Pete, Charlie Poole, Doc Watson, The Carter Family etc. NEVER dressed "down" when performing for folks who payed their money. As anybody who knows me will attest, the rest of the time I'm a slob!

Tell ya what anonymous guests ('course you already know I hold that kind of gutless behaviour in contempt), Lemme know "who" you are and I'll be glad to comment on corporate sponsorship of music festivals. (although I think the amount of political content on the nine albums I've recorded is quite substantial)

Don't think Gordon knows "Pretty Boy Floyd", but since I recorded "Banks Of Marble" on the album "Ready to Roll" (with 10 other union songs) it would be surprising if I DIDN'T sing it.

I've been a little curious about what the festival is like ever since I saw a photograph a few years ago of Aly Bain and Tom Anderson playing Shetland fiddle music at the 1977 festival. ...maybe I should look for a job in the advertising dept. of Royal Bank, because the yayhoo working there now is not getting much advertising bang for the buck. Now that's real smart, isn't it? Who's the whiz-bang that made that corporate decision? "Hey, let's sponsor a festival for folks we wouldn't want to do business with!"

Now if it were me, I'd sign the Bank on to a Brittany Spears or Eminem tour - someone with pop culture icon status who has millions of followers with impressionable young minds ripe for corruption with slogans like "Yo! 'Sup? Royal Bank. Word!" Then they could go to Mommy and Daddy and beg for a boob job like Britanny's (financed through Royal Bank, of course) or a gold tooth display (ditto). Get 'em while they're young and they're yours for life.

Or if I wanted to appeal to the older crowd, I'd talk to the people who handle The Rolling Stones or Tina Turner or Diana Ross. The possibilities are endless.

But sponsor a folk festival? Perish the thought. Not enough commercial appeal for an entity doing business in the financial realm. Sorry.

Oh, yeah, Arthur, we love our sacred cows, the good people who would give anyone the shirt off their back if they had need of it. If you talk to Big Mick, you might even get an invite to the Sacred Fertility Rites, with no roasting of Sacred Cows necessary.

If you wander around a bit more, you may even find that we all enjoy patting each other on the back, for all KINDS of triumphs, such as Catspaw's little boy being able to ride a bicycle.

You might also find that we do have very open, heated, and lively discussions on just the types of subject which the contentious, son of a pus-ridden bag of maggots (trying very hard not to laspse into the usual gutter stuff) GUEST posted above, in their attempt to muck up a thread which was intended as a pat on the back for someone who is selflessles and tireless in his commitment to folk of all kinds, especially social justice.

To the Guest who decided to flame Mr. Fielding, you are way out of your league here in choosing Rick (or anyone else on this Forum) as targets for your sputum.

As a former flamer here myself (with a certain degree of notoriety sometimes correctly and sometimes incorrectly attributable to me) I will share with you a few things that I have learned about flaming the good people (for the most part) here on Mudcat.
Prior to having met a certain number of Mudcatters here, it is all too easy to fall into a certain psychosis which allows one to flame with impunity since the psychosis dictates that as long as these people are only text based characters on your screen, they don't exist as real people with real feelings, and one is able to remain completely detached emotionally while posting the interpreted flamed comments.

But once you take the step of actually meeting some of these people in person, you are overcome with the enormous generosity of spirit, and as Big Mick is fond of saying "Friends you just haven't met yet." This for me was a profound experience and humanized these people, and if one has any semblence of conscience one should feel quite guilty about some of the perceived hurts one may have perpetrated in the past. I know I did.

Musicians and, those who enjoy music are very sensitive people and it is this sensitivity which is unfairly exploited in posting nasty flames, just because you had a bad day and need to blow off some steam; or you are bored with the Forum and want to shake it up; or you like shock humor. It is also an entirely selfish and self serving endeavor, and after a while the humor and satisfaction of doing so, wears thin.
Granted, there are and continue to be certain individuals --whose open "neediness" and "overzealous desire to be appreciated and accepted as part of this online community", or who have taken on the roles of "resident wits", or "protectors of all things Mudcat" ---who have flaming target written all over them and the temptation to ridicule them is sometimes there --UNTIL YOU'VE ACTUALLY MET THEM or met people who known them and have strong personal bonds with them.

To attack selfless, caring and giving indivduals, in the end will not achieve your purpose. You may find twisted humor in the short term by the reactions to those flames, but, in the long run and consistently, your efforts will backfire, and you will serve instead as a uniting force for the over-all populace here, and you will never be able to shake or diminish the love and conquering spirit in all facets of lifes adversities posted here on the Forum and in the Catters real lives.

I would suggest to all ongoing flamers as an experiment, you get out and start meeting Mudcatters at gatherings. You anonymity as a former flamer won't be revealed and you will be cured of all flaming desires having once done this.

In the meantime if you still feel compelled to flame on this Forum, you can have as many goes at me as you like. I, won't take any of it personally.

I'm not sure if i should put something about music in right after that, but I will. I saw both Lightfoot and Fielding and Bruce Coburn in Philadelphia a lot of years ago. There is a kind of Canadian style, but I've never figured out what it is. I think Stan Rogers had it as well. But these performers are all very differnt. I don't have an answer, I just thought of it after seeing Lightfoot's picture. Is it possible the others learned from him? I think he's in his sixties by now.

As Rick has so eloquently demonstrated, the secret is that we have a folk marketing board in Canada that is very strict. Every bottle of folk you buy is labelled homo, 2%, skim, etc., must be pasteurized, etc. It is not sold to people under the age of 35. You have to buy it at Folk Licencing Bureaus, can't carry it openly on the streets, and so on. This seems to have prevented Canadians from getting mad cow disease, though Britney Spears did play here a couple of weeks ago.

Guest I Guest, that's actually a pretty good question. I know I was very influenced by Gord. Stan and Bruce would also have heard his music while their styles were being formed. I'd add Ian Tyson to the list as well of influential Canadian musicians that I heard while growing up. Both Ian and Gordon listened to a lot of Country and Pop singers. Who knows maybe they ARE the "fathers" of some kind of Canadian sound. Now who's the Mother?

What wonderful memories! Michael Cooney, Rosalie, Utah, Kilby Snow, Bromberg, Stan Rogers, Glenn Ohrlin, Sara Ogan Gunning, Frank McArther, Lucy Cormier, Johnny Shines, the McGarrigles, Tony and John, David Amram, Ken Bloom, Barry O'Neil, Malvina Reynolds, Ola Belle Reed, Ramblin Jack,Marc Savoy, the Lilly Bros,Glen Orhlin, Boys of the Lough, Art Rosenbaum, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and the list goes on.

No I wasn't at Mariposa in the 70s or most of the 80s. Fraid those were the days I was sluggin' it out in the bars....and if ever there was a kiss of death from festival organisers, being seen as a "saloon singer" was it. Never got asked to one festival during that time. Wasn't "pure" enough I guess. Now I'm a lot "purer" and constantly broke!.......but happy.

Rick,I heard some of your music for the first time ( knowing it was you) yesterday and it was pretty neat. I am sure I heard you at Mariposa on Centre Island Toronto in '95? on the acoustic stage, playing some good blues, but I didnt know you were a "Sacred Cow" then. I think, it was the year Martin Carthy and Eliza and Norma were there.
As for the carping mean spirited git that posted above, well I for one can think of a lot worse things banks do than sponsor folk festivals..Maybe this is the dawning of enlightenment for them.

I think '95 was the year that Susan played there. She was performing on a small stage and after her first song Big Sugar took the mainstage and completely drowned her out. What they were doing there I'll never know.
