Mbo, I know you were being sarcastic the other night when you logged into Hearme as "Mbo - the mic hog", but it will make you a target. I don't happen to agree and I always enjoy what you do in there, but rather than not make any comments after you sing, I will post a "good one" etc. If you don't think I am being sincere about that then you don't know me, yet. If you want a practice session with real critiquing, then say so and we can all get some good tips from one another.

I agree with you MMario and your comments did lead me to read through this thread again and I can see nothing that should have caused Mbo to suggest that he was personally being accused of being a mic hog. Any subsequent observations were caused by his own remarks.

hey, guys, yes, Mbo does sing more numbers then a lot of people. however, a lot of them are requests by other people on hearme,( I hope people do understand the concept of a request) AND he spends a LOT more time there then most of us. I have been in a lot of hearme's and have yet to see him "hog" the mike. He takes turns, just like everyone else. However, there are a lot of times when he is the ONLY person willing or able to fill in "dead" air time.

embo, everything in life is a mixed blessing if it's a blessing at all. As I look at this thread, it does seem that you listed a whole lot more songs than anybody else. At our local events, we find that it's better to leave a bit of silence, than to have only the extraverts sing. (Shy people take longer to speak up.) Maybe you could do like doesterr, and make sure you let, say, at least ten minutes go by before you start another song. Leave gaps for the shy people, because nowadays it's hard to get hold of those PowderMilk Biscuits before the hearme session on a Sunday night so they need all the help they can get.

All this from someone who listens from the kitchen, most weeks, or hears a fragment of a song as she walks by and stops to hear the rest.... so I do realize it ain't mostly my business.

I did sing on Sunday, just coming home from a party I had left because I was too darned tired. So, I did just one song right after I got home.

I sang "Mary on the Wild Moor."

Learned it from Helen Schneyer's album, "Sacred, Somber and Silly." (I think it was that one.) Who was it said they collect Mary songs? Helen's albums are available from Folk Legacy.

(Pardon this interruption inserted as a paste-in. Due to system technical difficulties, the keyboard has just locked up and only mouse commands work. This necessitates shutting down and rebooting. However, first I am issuing this message as is, although there is more that would have been added. This message will be completed later when time permits.

Seems to me there are always gaps when someone who really wants to sing can jump in.

As a personal rule of thumb I try to wait 20 minutes after singing before I even start to look for an opportunity. Sometimes, with a small group (if we ever have any more of those), it's obvious that the turn should come before that. But it's a matter of judgment. In any case, there's no excuse for anyone who wants to sing to complain of not getting a chance, in my opinion.

The moderator approach seems to make sense, but it's no fun to do. I've been there, done that, and it's hard. Certainly no one person should be saddled with it for a long time; maybe a half hour at a stint would be all right, and then someone else. But how does that get assigned? Volunteers are hard to come by, from past experience.

Last night I sang:
Hobo Bill, the Railroad Bum, and
The Nightingale.

Look what you have started now Boy!

Any second now, 10,000 messages of patronizing support and well-wishing and people sing' are gonna come floodin' through here...and then you'll post "Ahh shucks if you all love me so much I guess I'll stay", etc.
Life is tough, and Life ain't always fair. Get used to it and toughen up, and be a surivior not a wimp. And don't give us this "nobody understands me" she-it.

If you're leavin' ---LEAVE. If you're stayin' --STAY.

From: Micca

I totally enjoyed the experience again after the "saga of the soundcard" and was inspired this morning to write

TIME ZONES
By Micca

Oh its summer time in Britain
when its winter down in Sydney
And the wild Mountain time
Is six hours ahead or twenty?

Chorus

Do you know, lassie, know?
What the time is in Colorado?
Or with kat in Wyoming
Or Catspaw in Ohio?
Do you know, lassie, know?

What time is Radio 'Cat?
If your Bonnie in Toronto
All this complicated math
Makes me want to lie down, pronto,

Has the Hearme come and gone?
While the time I'm spending counting
All this trouble with the time zone
And my phone bill it is mounting

When I first came to this infernal
Place I was carefree
Now I have become nocturnal
And I need a maths degree

I am going to get a plug in
That will do the calculations
Of the Wild Mountain Time
And of all the other stations

One thing that would help is for everyone who comes in there, to remember to list beside their name if they have a microphone. That way, if you list it, such as "Alison + mic" then we know who WANTS to sing. Others feel comfy just putting "listening" after their name. That also saves us going round and asking who has a mic and who doesn't, which can get confusing and time-consuming.

MaryinKY - one way to read *up* the chat, when it does that, is to enlarge it to your whole screen. It is annoying the way it always jumps down, though, isn't it?

Sorcha...get thing out there to her, willya! We want to HearIT!!

As a nonsinger, but regular listener, I've always felt very welcome and comfortable with the protocol. I anticipate more difficulties as the crowd gets larger. It's hard to keep up with the chat with several conversations going at once. And then the blasted chat shifts everytime somebody posts, so it's hard to review previous comments. :-] I like the idea of taking turns according to the list, but it's hard to keep track when so many people are coming and going and so many are like me and don't sing. I think this will eventually evolve into many groups, each with it's own personality. When I get my dulcimer from Sorcha I'll take the plunge and play one song for one person!

The daftest thing about it all is I came in as Jon F - listening as I didn't want to sing but ended up singing a couple of songs to try and break up the long periods of silence.

I don't know where the answer lies and we have been through the moderator bit before. Surely if nobobody is singing and nobody is doing the hosting/ pushing others into singing, even if a person is feeling a little to shy or polite to just jump in, it is easy to type "I'd like to sing..." in the text box.

Sorry if I sounded upset. The self-pity was toungue in cheek, but I forget that it doesn't come through that way in print.

I actually didn't sing because I was a post-yard-sale basket case.

I do think there should be some rule of thumb for determining whether you're "hogging the mike" or not hogging it enough - but people would differ in how much they want to hear any given person, so there's probably no good answer.

Peter.

Midchuck...I wondered last night why you didn't sing...sorry you didn't. There were MANY looong silences waiting for someone to take a turn..even with up to twenty participants. There were also repeated requests for anyone who hadn't sung yet to do so next....resulting in more loooong silences. I somehow see you as a "regular" in Hearme and when you didn't respond....was disappointed and "assumed" you didn't want to sing. I think its a fine line we walk in Hearme between putting too much pressure on people to sing who may be shy or tired and simultaneously being sure everyone who wants a turn but is not saying so, takes one. If anything...I often think we're being too "pushy" when we go "begging" for someone to sing. Puhleeze, next time...if you're not comfortable pressing the F9 key during a silence...or in response to a request for someone who hasn't sung yet to take a turn.....can you just type a burp in the chatbox that you'd like to do a song? Wish we had known how you were feeling....

Midchuck, I am sorry you didn't get a chance to sing for us. I would like to have heard you. It was a big crowd and I was not able to stay for very long.

While I was there, there were several times where no one would jump in. I pleaded, others wrote entreaties, I cajoled, we kept asking. Homeless, at one point, wrote the question of what the etiquette was, which we all tried to answer. I wrote that we try to be fair, going round the circle (list) and catching people when they come in, but with no one *moderator* and people in and out for whatever reasons, it can get difficult.

I am not sayig any fo this happened when you were in there, but as has been said in an other thread, if no one jumps in, when the call goes out, one who is ready and willing, will jump in, even if they've just been heard.

Please come again and just put a note right in the chat, or speak up and say you are ready or will be after so-and-so and we'll love to HearYOU.

So, this does beg the question, do we want to go back to trying to have a designated *moderator* for the Sunday night session? If so, are people willing to sign up and stick around? Make the commitment? Or, can we muddle along as we've done and try to be more aware and careful?

Thanks,

kat

I was there for an hour, but never got to sing...sniff...Guess I'm not pushy enough for HearMe...Of course, we were running our yard sale all weekend and I was sort of wrung out...

Seems when you have a large group, a little more attention ought to be paid to a fair rotation. If we don't have anyone acting as "stage manager," I would think the civil thing to do would be to ask before singing, "Is there anyone who hasn't sung since I sang last, who wants to now?" But I may be missing something. I often do.

It was fun to have Wicked Children on the 'net, though.

One of the things that is so cool about hearme is that you get to read the comments as they go by while you are singing. It is like making non-visual eye contact with the listeners. I've only been on a few times, but already I'm hooked.
