Subject: Lyr Add: FRIENDS^^ From: Mbo Date: 11 Jul 00 - 09:11 AM Bright light almost blinding Black night still there shining I can't stop; keep on climbing Looking for what I knew Had a friend she once told me, "You got love, you ain't lonley," Now she's gone and left me only Looking for what I knew Mmm, I'm tellin' you now, The greatest thing you ever can do now Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now It's very easy just Met a man on the roadside crying Without a friend there's no denying Your incomplete there'll be no finding Looking for what you knew So anytime somebody needs you Don't let 'em down although it grieves you Some day you'll need someone like they do Looking for what you knew Mmm, I'm tellin' you now The greatest thing you ever can do now Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now It's very easy just --Led Zeppelin |
Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: mactheturk Date: 11 Jul 00 - 09:50 AM Mbo, that's a great pick!! One definition of compassion that I like is...."to bear witness to suffering, in a way take results in respect, responsibility and service to others".. The great thing about music is the part it can play in this process. Mac |
Subject: Lyr Add: Healing Song^^ From: GUEST,Marymac, sans cookie Date: 11 Jul 00 - 10:00 AM Mine is Healing Song, written by Charlie Murphy in 1978. Charlie lived in Philadelphia at that time, released an LP, which I have a copy of. A few years after that, he moved to Seattle, where he still lives, as far as I know. At least one of Charlie's songs is in Rise Up Singing. This one, and some others of his are in the predeccessor to RUS, Winds of the People, also put together by Peter Blood and Annie Patterson. Back then, Peter, Charlie and I were all part of an urban network of communal houses with a focus on non-violent activism. Sing the chorus first, in between, and after the verses. Let me or Max know if you want to hear this. My friends, who are coming to the Mudcat Radio Show NEXT week, know this, and can sing it a damn sight better than I could! I'm copying the chords just as they appear in WotP. They should be what Charlie used because Peter would've gotten them right from him. Wish me luck with the line breaks, I'm gonna try it the html way!
Healing Song Chorus: And we'll sing a song to keep us warm
People are your eyes open wide
People do you listen to your dreams Charlie Murphy, (c) 1978 |

Subject: Lyr Add: Trouble Me^^ From: sledge Date: 11 Jul 00 - 11:46 AM This one from 10,000 maniacs does it for me Trouble Me [ music : Dennis Drew / lyrics : Natalie Merchant ] Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries. Trouble me on the days when you feel spent. Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong? Trouble me. Speak to me, don't mislead me, the calm I feel means a storm is swelling; there's no telling where it starts or how it ends. Speak to me, why are you building this thick brick wall to defend me when your silence is my greatest fear? Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong? Speak to me. Let me have a look inside these eyes while I'm learning. Please don't hide them just because of tears. Let me send you off to sleep with a "There, there, now stop your turning and tossing." Let me know where the hurt is and how to heal. Spare me? Don't spare me anything troubling. Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries. Speak to me and let our words build a shelter from the storm. Lastly, let me know what I can mend. There's more, honestly, than my sweet friend, you can see. Trust is what I'm offering if you trouble me. HTML line breaks added. -JoeClone 13-Mar-01. |

Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: mactheturk Date: 13 Jul 00 - 08:59 AM Compassion is something we must practice. This practice increases our capacity to care. It reinforces charity, empathy, and sympathy. It is a very good exercise for our hearts.
Here's a few good "compassion videos". |
Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: Mbo Date: 13 Jul 00 - 09:14 AM Thanks Mac. Not wanting to be a creep or something, but the movie "City of Joy" was actually kind of bad. The original book, is well...heart-breakingly beautiful. For some reason, the makers of the movies only included a small portion of the beauty of the book into the movie...I'm not sure why...I think people would have like to have had more beauty, but, oh well. Check out the book from your library, it really is amazing. You'll never think quite the same way ever again... --Mbo |

Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: Peter T. Date: 13 Jul 00 - 10:55 AM I always find the Beatles' "In My Life" compassionate, for some reason. I think it has to do with giving a kind of benediction over the past. Such an adult song for a bunch of 24 year olds to write. But they had lived some by then, I guess. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: GUEST Date: 13 Jul 00 - 03:28 PM I went to dinner last night with a good friend that is suffering with cancer. It was a very positive and uplifting time. My friend told me that MUSIC has been the most effective and enjoyable part of her treatment. I thought that was worth sharing. Apparently the "gift of music" allows the "gift of suffering" to manifest itself. Thanks to all, Mac |
Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: Jacob B Date: 13 Jul 00 - 04:55 PM Mary, that's a beautiful song. Clinton, you saved me from having to do a search for those lyrics. I've heard that song, and I've been thinking that I needed to learn it. "Turning Toward The Morning", by Gordon Bok, and "Lie Easy" (I don't know the author, but County Down recorded it) are two other favorites of mine. |
Subject: RE: Songs of Compassion From: GUEST,dan evergreen Date: 17 Jul 00 - 03:42 PM I really agree with "Lean on Me." Seems to me, that is a great musical composition, as well as a good song. My favorite, though, would be "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen." |
