One of my favotites is off the Judy Collins album "Recollections". The song is "Pack Up Your Sorrows", written by Richard Farina and Pauline Marden, it goes....

No use cryin' talkin' to a stranger
namin' the sorrow you see
too many sad times, too many bad times
nobody knows what you mean

But if, some how you could pack up your sorrows
and give them all to me
You would loose them
I know how to use them
just give them all to me

What are your favorites?

Thanks, Mac

Subject: Lyr Add: FRIENDS^^
From: Mbo
Date: 11 Jul 00 - 09:11 AM

Bright light almost blinding
Black night still there shining
I can't stop; keep on climbing
Looking for what I knew

Had a friend she once told me,
"You got love, you ain't lonley,"
Now she's gone and left me only
Looking for what I knew

Mmm, I'm tellin' you now,
The greatest thing you ever can do now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now
It's very easy just

Met a man on the roadside crying
Without a friend there's no denying
Your incomplete there'll be no finding
Looking for what you knew

So anytime somebody needs you
Don't let 'em down although it grieves you
Some day you'll need someone like they do
Looking for what you knew

Mmm, I'm tellin' you now
The greatest thing you ever can do now
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now
It's very easy just

Mbo, that's a great pick!!

One definition of compassion that I like is...."to bear witness to suffering, in a way take results in respect, responsibility and service to others"..

The great thing about music is the part it can play in this process.

Subject: Lyr Add: Healing Song^^
From: GUEST,Marymac, sans cookie
Date: 11 Jul 00 - 10:00 AM

Mine is Healing Song, written by Charlie Murphy in 1978. Charlie lived in Philadelphia at that time, released an LP, which I have a copy of. A few years after that, he moved to Seattle, where he still lives, as far as I know.

At least one of Charlie's songs is in Rise Up Singing. This one, and some others of his are in the predeccessor to RUS, Winds of the People, also put together by Peter Blood and Annie Patterson. Back then, Peter, Charlie and I were all part of an urban network of communal houses with a focus on non-violent activism.

Sing the chorus first, in between, and after the verses. Let me or Max know if you want to hear this. My friends, who are coming to the Mudcat Radio Show NEXT week, know this, and can sing it a damn sight better than I could!

I'm copying the chords just as they appear in WotP. They should be what Charlie used because Peter would've gotten them right from him. Wish me luck with the line breaks, I'm gonna try it the html way!

Healing Song Chorus: And we'll sing a song to keep us warm
And celebrate the path we're on
There's healing in the singing of our songs
We'll all join hands to calm the fears
And hold on tight to cry the tears
In struggle and freedom we are one
Chords: D G / BM G / D A G A ://

People are your eyes open wide
Are your ears close to the ground
You can hear the rumbling neath our feet
Do you sense things turning round
We have decisions we have to face
In choosing the future we will let love erase all hate
Chorde: Bm D D - / G D A - :// G D G D /G D A -

People do you listen to your dreams
Do you hear what they're telling you
Did you know that together we have the power
To see our finest dreams come true
We have decisions we have to face
In choosing our future we will let love erase all hate

Charlie Murphy, (c) 1978

DAng Sins, you beat me to it! That one always makes my cry. There is another awesome song about compassion, by Doug Stone, called "Faith in You, Faith in Me," but unfortunetly I cannot obtain the lyrics.

From: sledge

This one from 10,000 maniacs does it for me

Trouble Me
[ music : Dennis Drew / lyrics : Natalie Merchant ]

Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries.
Trouble me on the days when you feel spent.
Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong?
Trouble me.

Speak to me, don't mislead me, the calm I feel means a storm is swelling;
there's no telling where it starts or how it ends.
Speak to me, why are you building this thick brick wall to defend me when your silence is my greatest fear?
Why let your shoulders bend underneath this burden when my back is sturdy and strong?
Speak to me.

Let me have a look inside these eyes while I'm learning.
Please don't hide them just because of tears.
Let me send you off to sleep with a "There, there, now stop your turning and tossing."
Let me know where the hurt is and how to heal.

Spare me? Don't spare me anything troubling.
Trouble me, disturb me with all your cares and you worries.
Speak to me and let our words build a shelter from the storm.
Lastly, let me know what I can mend.
There's more, honestly, than my sweet friend, you can see.
Trust is what I'm offering if you trouble me.

HTML line breaks added. -JoeClone 13-Mar-01.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HUMAN CANNONBALL^^
From: flattop
Date: 11 Jul 00 - 09:51 PM

The Human Cannonball by Loudon Wainwright

Emanuel Zacchini Sr. the human cannonball
Died in Sarasota Monday, 84 was all
From Italy in 34, John Ringling brought him here
A broken neck in 51 ended his career

But in those years in between, 17 in all
Few flew as fast or as far as the cannonball
58 yards and 1 foot was the distance that he went
54 miles in an hour was the speed that he was sent

2 of his brothers & 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren in all
and the one great grandchild survive the cannonball
He died on Monday where he lived it happens to us all
Shot through the air expecting nets, flight & then a fall

Emanuel Zacchini Sr. the human cannonball

Spelling corrected. Emanuel Zacchini was a real person! -JoeClone 13-Mar-01.>

Some of these go back a way.
Mbo, didn't realise what I wa sreading till you mentioned Led Zep just had a tingling of rememberance.
SINSULL, I had written out the words of that one for my Dad the Day before he died and was going to take them to him on fathers day (the day after) 'cause he wanted to read them to hi sbrother in Florida.
Marymac, great song. I'd love to hear it if I can manage. The 19th is my birthday (46 gulp).
Anyway : Lean on Me - Bill Withers
If You Need a Shoulder to Cry On - David Essex

Cheers
Gary

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO DIES?^^
From: Clinton Hammond2
Date: 13 Jul 00 - 03:43 AM

Who Dies?

A nephew once asked me when he was quite young
Who dies? I said, Everyone dies.
No use denying it one day you're done
Oh, everyone dies
Princes and paupers there's no one immune
And no one who'll escape their demise
So you'd better make use of each day that you're given
Oh everyone dies

Now people have pondered this time and again
Who dies? Everyone dies.
We suspect that we're more than mere mortal remains
Oh everyone dies
Wise men and prophets they've all had their say
On the nature of our afterlives
But incase there's no beer there we'll have one more round
Oh everyone dies.

Your time may be short or your time may be long
Who dies? Everyone dies
But it's going to happen as sure as you're born
Oh everyone dies
Friends and relations and all we hold dear
Will one day pass to the other side
So we'd better embrace them as long as they're here
Oh everyone dies.

By James Keelaghan....

Compassion is something we must practice. This practice increases our capacity to care. It reinforces charity, empathy, and sympathy. It is a very good exercise for our hearts.

Here's a few good "compassion videos".

Ulee's Gold
Central Station
City of Joy
Hidden in America

Compassion is a prerequisite to happiness......

Thanks Mac. Not wanting to be a creep or something, but the movie "City of Joy" was actually kind of bad. The original book, is well...heart-breakingly beautiful. For some reason, the makers of the movies only included a small portion of the beauty of the book into the movie...I'm not sure why...I think people would have like to have had more beauty, but, oh well. Check out the book from your library, it really is amazing. You'll never think quite the same way ever again...

I always find the Beatles' "In My Life" compassionate, for some reason. I think it has to do with giving a kind of benediction over the past. Such an adult song for a bunch of 24 year olds to write. But they had lived some by then, I guess.

I went to dinner last night with a good friend that is suffering with cancer. It was a very positive and uplifting time. My friend told me that MUSIC has been the most effective and enjoyable part of her treatment. I thought that was worth sharing.

Apparently the "gift of music" allows the "gift of suffering" to manifest itself.

Thanks to all, Mac

Mary, that's a beautiful song.

Clinton, you saved me from having to do a search for those lyrics. I've heard that song, and I've been thinking that I needed to learn it.

"Turning Toward The Morning", by Gordon Bok, and "Lie Easy" (I don't know the author, but County Down recorded it) are two other favorites of mine.

I really agree with "Lean on Me." Seems to me, that is a great musical composition, as well as a good song. My favorite, though, would be "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen."
