What's the significance of "the Orange, the Purple and Blue" mentioned in the song's third stanza? I assume the colours are connected with the Orange Order.

Sally Sloane played a melody she called Up With the Orange, the Purple and Blue.

Who was captain black?

Song was written in 1898 & refers to an incident 100 years before during the Presbyterian rebellion.

Captain Black is probably a reference to Blacker a member of the local gentry who played quite a role in putting down the rebellion. Why it was altered/misinterpreted I don't know but might have been that Black scanned better or just through ignorance of facts.

GBS - my God I'm communicating with George Bernard Shaw! You're welcome, and I prefer my whiskey to flow like whiskey, and not German river water, not that there's anything wrong with German river water, it makes damn fine beer. ALL the best. Seamus

Thanks Seamus,

The Brandy did flow like the Rhine.

I remembered that couplet as

When in Aghalee we arrived safely Oh the whiskey did flow like the wine

Which was a bit unimpressive.

Thanks Again

GBS

Subject: Lyr Add: THE AUGHALEE HEROES
From: Seamus Kennedy

THE AUGHALEE HEROES

You Protestant heroes of Ireland
Give ear to these lines I write down
Concerning those Aughalee heroes
That marched thro' sweet Portadown.

It being on the 12th day of July
Our music so sweetly did play
And the Protestant Boys and Boyne water
Were the tunes we played going away

Like the sons of King William we marched
Till at length Lurgan Town we did view
Where the Church it was there decorated
With the Orange, the Purple and Blue.

Round its spires all our colours were flying
Small guns like cannons did roar
Long life to these Aughalee heroes
For they are the boys we adore

Captain Black, like a bold Orange hero,
Came riding downw on his grey steed
And he asked us what number we carried
And where we did mean to proceed

We told him from the county of Antrim
Our number was six thirty two
We are the bold Aughalee heroes
That will soon make the rebels subdue

We took off our hats to salute him
So boldly he bade us march on
And he rode like a hero before us
Till we came to the banks of the Bann.

And when we arrived safe in Aughalee
The Brandy did flow like the Rhine
Long life to these Aughalee heroes
For they are the boys crossed the Boyne.

Hope this helps.
