I was viewing the new books at the public liberry just a couple weeks ago, and they had a beautiful, hardbound edition of Pogo. It may have been this:

When I was in college in the mid-50s, there were four comic strips we all read every day: Dennis the Menace, Peanuts, Lil Abner, and (of course) Pogo. It was then that I got my real introduction to literature--the real stuff rather than the stuff they taught in school. I went on to Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll, and even to G. K. Chesterton. But to this day, I still believe that Walt Kelly was the master of them all--including Ketchum, Capp, and Schultz.

I loved Pogo by the time I got to college, but not as a little kid. I remember when I was just a kid, that Pogo was too hard to read. It's those typefaces. And the vocabulary. So if you want to introduce a new generation to Pogo, I recommend waiting till they are high-school age, at least.

Although it might be fun to sit on the couch with a book and a kid and read it aloud. Be sure to do the accents and use expression.

The strip that Bill D posted has a song about the Battle of New Orleans. I just read a history book (When the Mississippi Flowed Backwards by Jay Feldman) that had a description of that 'battle.' It wasn't a battle, it was a massacre. On the orders of incompetent officers, the British charged a line of Americans who stood on an embankment and mowed them down without mercy. Even Americans who had been there and done it talked about how horrible it was.

I never want to hear a cheery folksong about the Battle of New Orleans again.

No, Child would not have written anything like that. Walt Kelly himself wrote many 'poems' that had genuine literary quality...and often 'attributed' them to Porkypine, who I often suspect was Walt's alter-ego.

I don't know if I have that particular book...

The strip stopped running after Walt Kelly's death. His wife and son tried to make it happen for a brief period, but it took his genius come up with those amazing plots and it took his fine hand to do the brushwork.
Yes, I said brushwork.
Pogo is one of only a few strips drawn (I believe, AND lettered) with a brush. He was Bill Watterson's inspiration for the brush drawings (and some of the other stuff) in "Calvin and Hobbes".
Thanks, Bill, for the postings. Any of the songs will do for my pick. I've got more than a few Pogo books myself. I think I have the Body Politic, which is one of the "both barrels at McCarthy" books.

one of MY favorite series is when Kelly spent several months working the story of digging holes to China and dressing Albert up like Santa...etc...to the line:

I think you're shavin' a few years there luv!!! But I read Pogo religiously from an early age. First I suppose because it had animals and all, but like the many wonderful cartoons it inspired, Pogo was an adult political cartoon that also had a young audience. Shoe, Bloom County, even Rocky and Bullwinkle (although R&B is more moronic-still love it) all owe a debt to the genius of Walt Kelly.

It strikes me that there are many fans among us here. It also makes me wonder at the genius of a man who was able to shape lives and opinions of young children in such a gentle way. When I consider it, I realize that many of my basic beliefs came not from anywhere but the swamp; from the rantings of Howland, the strength and equality of Miz Beaver, the quest for understanding of poor Churchy, the creative loafing of Albert, and the gentle, often sorrowful, sometimes piercing, insights of a small possum.

Think about it. Many of us were not simply raised on Walt Kelly, we were reared by him!

Gee guys, how about a Mudcat rendezvous at the Pogofest! Things would never be the same.....

The songbook, "Songs of the Pogo," is quite findable in used bookstores. I paid $20 for mine a few years back. Those desiring one might try a search on to see what's available now and what sellers are asking. If you don't care about pristine condition and original dustjackets and suchlike, you can usually find something affordable.

Actually, Midchuck, I'd bet that "Good, Though" is old enough to have been ballast on Noah's Ark. I was raised on Pogo, have the album, have the songbook, and I'm exposing my kids to The Books. Yeah, I guess a couple of us might have heard of the guy. Somewhere, I ran across a fan website ("igopogo"?) with pictures of a fan convention somewhere in the western USA, I think (Montana?). The pictures included enthusiasts in costume....and my co-workers think I'm eccentric. If I come across the actual address, I'll put it up.

Has anyone else got the '52 strip where he used the gag about whoever complains about the food having to do the cooking, with the punch line, "....Good, Though!" 20 years before Utah came out with it? (In the Pogo strip, however,the food was "I Go Pogo" campaign buttons cooked up as beans - no moose turds.)

Utah has been quoted as saying that he got the idea from a story someone told around a campfire...but I bet Utah's rant could be traced back to Kelly, if there were any way to follow it back...

I have my dad's collection of Pogo books and love ever bit of them - even tho I don't truly understand some of the political humor. How wonderful to find others familiar with the Okeefenokee Swamp dezidens. Sometimes I have to agree with them that the only way to make the world safe is get rid of all the hidden human-bean types.
