All I know is the '50s college version:

Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the Mermaid,
Down at the bottom of the sea;
Down among the corals,
Minnie lost her morals,
Gee but she was mighty good to me.
Many's the night
Beneath the pale moonlight,
In her seaweed bungalow,
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust,
Two twin beds and only one of them mussed;
Well, you can easily see she's not my mother,
'Cause my mother's 49.
Well, you can easily see she's not my sister,
'Cause I never showed my sister such a helluva time.
Well, you can easily see she's not my sweetie,
'Cause my sweetie's too refined.
She's just a slip of a kid
Who never cared what she did;
She’s a personal friend of mine
(She does my laundry), a personal friend of mine.

MINNIE THE MERMAID
Phil Harris?

Oh, what a time I had with Minnie, the mermaid
Down at the bottom of the sea!
I lost all my troubles, in among the bubbles,
And she was just as sweet as she could be!

And every night, when those starfish came out,
I hugged and kissed her, so, oh!
Oh what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid,
Down in her seaweed bungalo, low!
Down in her seaweed bungalo!

Oh, what a time I had with Minnie, the mermaid
Down at the bottom of the sea!
I lost all my morals, in among the corals!
That minnie made a sucker out of me!

Perhaps a less noble song than Captain Jack & the Mermaid, but a good old song nonetheless. I remember this song from about 1947, I think, and it was definitely Phil Harris that sang it. But I can't find it on Levy.

MINNIE THE MERMAID (A LOVE SONG IN FISH TIME)
Words and music adapted by Jack Norton, copyright 1999 (1930 / Bud De Sylva).

[C] The other night I [D7] dreamed that I was
[G7] Down at the bottom of the [C] sea. [Ab7 | G7]
[E7] I met a mermaid fair [Am] who was [E7] living [Am] there,
[D7] Her name was Minnie, and she [G7] tumbled for me.
Now you know Minnie was a [C] kind of a [A7] fish,
But [D7] take it from me, she was a [G7] beautiful fish.

[C] Oh, what a time I had with, Minnie the [A7] Mermaid,
[D7] Down at the bottom of the sea.
[G7] I forgot my troubles, [C] there amongst the bubbles,
[D7] Gee, but she was awf'ly good to [G7] me.
And [C7] every night when the starfish came out,
[F] I would love [Fm] her [C | D7] so, [G7] oh,
[C] Oh what a time I had with [A7] Minnie the Mermaid,
[D7] Down in her [G7] seaweed bunga- [C] low.

I can't forget those happy days,
Way down at the bottom of the sea.
I'm really strong for her, and now I long for her,
And I'm inclined to think she's longing for me.
So ev'ry night I'm in bed before nine,
Hoping I'll dream of that mermaid of mine.

MINNIE THE MERMAID
As recorded by Phil Harris

Last night, I dreamed that I was down in the bottom of the sea,
Down in that salty water.
And I met a maiden fair, who had a cottage there,
'Course she didn't have it in her own name, but anyway, we had it.
And she had a tail of a fish for a train,
Whoa, now, whoa! How that gal could entertain!

And what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid,
Down at the bottom of the sea.
I lost all my troubles, in amongst the bubbles;
Why, she was just as sweet as she could be.
And every night when those starfish came out,
I hugged and kissed her so. Oh!
Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid,
Down in her seaweed bungalow, low,
Down in her seaweed bungalow.

Yeah, I can't forget those happy days,
Way down at the bottom of the sea.
Yeah, I'm strong for her and I really long for her,
And I'm inclined to believe that she's longing for me;
So every night I'm in bed before nine,
'Cause I want to dream again of that mermaid of mine;

'Cause, oh what a time I had with minnie the mermaid
Down at the bottom of the sea!
I lost all my morals, in amongst those corals.
That Minnie made a sucker out of me.
And every night when those starfish came out,
I hugged and kissed her so. Oh!
Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid
Down in her seaweed bungalow, low,
Down in her seaweed bungalow.

And I sing with delight, as I spend most the night
'Neath that billowy ocean with you,
'Cause you're sweet and pretty too.
Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep
So beware....b-e-e-e-ware.

(About 1956)

As the semesters drew to a close at the University of Detroit many students would be running short of funds (and consequently dangerously short of beer). But we discovered a solution in our midst - name of John Clancy - a student with a beautiful Irish tenor voice and an encyclopedic memory of very old songs.

When funds ran short we'd crank up John and go out to a certain neighborhood bar - not our usual student hangout but a quiet place where sentimental old guys would congregate and drink.

After a few minutes we (as a quartet) would start singing all the old songs John taught us with John's sweet whiskey tenor sailing high above the harmony. Free drinks then, would just keep coming. Economic downturn solved!

A lot of the songs were relics from barbershop quartet days of the prior century (i.e. "Coney Island Baby"). One of these old songs was "Mini the Mermaid."

I don't remember all of the lyrics for it printed above, but my memory of it is similar to some of what's above and goes like this:

Oh what a time I had with Minnie the Mermaid
Down upon the bottom of the sea!
I forgot my troubles
Down beneath the bubbles,
Gee but she was good to me!
.................
...............

Might be wrong but I do think the following descending bass part was part of another song:

"Many brave men are asleep in the deep so beware.
Beeeeeeeeware!" (foghorn-like)

Boy, does that one bring back memories. My parents, God bless them, were devotees of Lawrence Welk. I may have become a musician in self-defense. He had a piano player named Larry Hooper who did all the basso profundo singing solos, mostly novelty numbers like this one. "Minnie" was like a signature song for him. When he sang the "Down at the bottom of the sea" part, windows would rattle and seismographs would record it.

The ASLEEP IN THE DEEP part in Phil Harris' version definitely was a quote from a different song. See this thread: Lyr Req: Asleep in the Deep (Lamb/Petrie).

Hi all-
Great to see all these lyrics- my grandpa would always sing it- one addition to the end

She was just a poor kid
who didn't know what she did
a personal friend of mine
that needed money
it's better on the other side
get off the table
the two bucks was for the beer!

MINNIE THE MERMAID (A LOVE SONG IN FISH TIME)
As recorded by Bernie Cummins and His Hotel New Yorker Orchestra, 10 March 1930.

Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid
Down at the bottom of the sea!
I forgot my troubles
There amongst the bubbles.
Gee, but she was awf'ly good to me!
And ev'ry night when the starfish came out,
I'd hug and kiss her so. Oh!
Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid
Down in her seaweed bungalow!

She was just a sailor's sweetheart.

Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid
Down at the bottom of the sea!
I found out that Minnie
Wasn't very skinny
Ev'ry time she sat upon my knee.
Oh, what a night! How we danced with delight
Down at the Codfish Ball! Oh!
Oh, what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid
Down in her seaweed bungalow!

MINNIE THE MERMAID
As sung by Andrew Jones on "Plenty Plenty Love" (2004)

Many's the night I spent with Minnie the mermaid
Down by the bottom of the sea.
Minnie lost her morals
Down among the corals.
Gee, but she was good to me!

Now you can easily see she's not my mother,
'Cause my mother's forty-nine.
Now you can easily see she's not my sweetie,
'Cause my sweetie's too refined.
Now you can easily see she's not my sister,
'Cause I never gave my sister such a heck of a good time.
She's just a slip of a kid.
She didn't know what she did.
She's just a personal friend of mine.

REPEAT.
