Subject: Info Req - Bring me roses in the winter
From: alice@cascoind.com

I'm looking for information on a song one of my teachers used back in high school when I was learning about chord transitions. I have the lyrics and chords but don't know anything else about the song... has anyone else heard it?

The first verse goes something like this

Bring me roses in the wintertime When roses are hard to find Bring me roses in the wintertime I've got roses on my mind Roses are sweet almost anytime - and yet Bring me roses in the wintertime How easily we forget

It was done by The Womenfolk back in the '60's on what I believe was their only album. I still have the record and will check it to find info on the author, etc..

I checked the album and was only able to discover that the name, Sheldon and the ASCAP thingie were next to the title. BTW, Sheldon is not one of the names of the women who comprised The Womenfolk. A lot more searching caused me to discover that I was in error: the group put out a total of five albums.

This song was written by my friend Ernie Lieberman who during the bad old days of McCarthy used the pseudonymm, Ernie Sheldon. Last time I heard, Ernie is in Northern California where his wife Ann works as a full professor of sociology at one of the schools.

Ernie was a member of People's Songs and People's Artists out of New York and then he became a pro songwriter working with the likes of Elmer Bernstein, the film composer. One of his tunes in collaboration with Elmer was "Baby The Rain Must Fall" popularized by Glen Yarborough and Glen's only singles hit.

Of course, Ernie knows Joyce James of the Womenfolk. We also collaborated on some pop type songs, one done by Peggy Lee and another by Patty Duke. Nothing chart busting but it was fun and did reach Billboard Charts.

Ernie is a friend of Pete Seegers and the early crew from New York People's Songs singers. He plays a nice guitar and sings. He wrote a song called "Song of My Hands" that was recorded years ago.

He was also in the LImelighters replacing Glen Yarborough for a while.

They say the third time is charmed, so here I go, again. This is another tune I only heard in the Wexford area, and only 2 verses. If anyone knows the correct name, or more verses I would appreciate it ever so much.

Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
When they are hard to find.
Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
I've got roses on my mind.
Love is sweet, anytime, and yet,
Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
How easy we forget.

The next verse began with, "Bring me your love in your later years, When love is hard to find," and the rest is forgotten. It is a lovely song. Wish I had sung it more often now.
Thanks and regards, Indigo

Bring Me a Rose

Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
When they're hard to find.
Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
I've got, roses on my mind.

For a rose is sweet,
Most anytime and yet.
Bring me a rose in the wintertime,
How easily we forget.

Bring me a friend when I'm all alone,
When they're hard to find.
Bring me a friend when I'm all alone,
I've got, friendship on my mind.

For a friend is sweet,
Most anytime and yet.
Bring me a friend when I'm all alone,
How easily we forget.

Bring me love when there's talk of hate,
When it's hard to find.
Bring me love when there's talk of hate,
I've got, lovin' on my mind.

For a friend is sweet,
Most anytime and yet.
Bring me love when there's talk of hate,
We never shall forget.

Maybe? Not quite the same, but close. Apparently it is a Sorority song, for women's groups. That is where I found it anyway.

Omigod! I haven't thought of this song for years! Thank-you, thank-you for reminding me! First heard it from a high school friend, back in the early 70's -

Give me a rose in the wintertime
When it's hard to find
Give me a rose in the wintertime
I've got roses on my mind

A rose is sweet
Most any time, and yet
Give me a rose in the wintertime
How easy we forget

Give me a smile when I'm far from home
When it's hard to find
Give me a smile when I'm far from home
I've got smilin' on my mind

A smile is sweet
Most any time, and yet
Give me a smile when I'm far from home
How easy we forget

Give me a kiss when the baby's grown
When it's hard to find
Give me a kiss when the baby's grown
I've got kisses on my mind

A kiss is sweet
Most any time, and yet
Give me a kiss when the baby's grown
How easy we forget

Give me peace when there's talk of war
When it's hard to find
Give me peace when there's talk of war
I've got peace upon my mind

Now, peace is sweet
Most any time, and yet
Give me peace when there's talk of war
How easy we forget

The song is on the Limeliter's "More of Everything" album, and is actually on the Womenfolk's "Man O Man" album under the title "How Easy We Forget". Ernie Sheldon, the songwriter was in a number of different groups and for a while was on of the "Glen Yarbrough replacements" with the Limeliters.

Sorry, I was so excited I hit the wrong button, AGAIN! I cannot thank you all enough for all the words and history of the song.
It seems that words and verses must have been made up and changed about to please the singer of the moment.
It is a lovely tune, thanks Joe for the cords.
The other verse that I had was,
Bring me your love in the later years,
When love is hard to find,
Bring me your love in the later years,
When I'll have loving on my mind,
For love is sweet, anytime, and yet,
Bring me your love in the later years,
How easy we forget.

Again, thanks to all, especially Sorcha, Celticblues and Joe for all the help.
Regards, Indigo

Boy, Is this similar to Malvina's "If you love me," or what?

If - you - love - me, if you love love love me
Plant a rose for me
If you think you'll love me for a long long time
Plant an apple tree.

The sun will shine, the wind will blow,
The rain will fall and the tree will grow,
And whether you comes, or whether you goes
I'll have an apple, and I'll have a rose,
Lovely to bite and nice to my nose,
and every jiucy nibble will be
A sweet reminder of the time you loved me,
And planted a rose for me
...and an apple tree.^^^

OK now that we are diverting--
This one written by a Welsh miner--
This one stolen by the Carter family--

   D A
Wonderful things of folks are said,
When they have passed away.
D A
Flowers adorn the narrow bed,
And over the sleeping lay. A A7

CHORUS
G D E
Give me the roses while I live, trying to cheer me on,
D A D
Useless the flowers that you give, after the soul is gone.

D A
Folks are forgiven when folks lie,
Cold in the narrow bed.
D A
Let us forgive them ere they die,
Now should the words be said.

CHORUS

D A
Praises are heard not by the dead,
Roses they cannot see.
D A
Let us not wait till souls have fled,
Tenderest friends to be.

Sorry for all caps in previous post--
Cut and pasted from my song book data
Printed in all caps for aging eyeballs...
Not for Internet screaming....

Or here is Terry Allen's version on a similar theme:

GIVE ME THE FLOWERS
Attributed to Elvin bigger, Louise Certain,
And Gladys Stacey Flatt, 1957

In this world today, where we're living,
Some folks say, The worst of us they can,
But when we are dead, and in our caskets,
They always slip some lilies in our hands.

Won't you give me my flowers while I'm livin'
And let me enjoy them while I can
Don't wait till I'm ready to be buried
And then slip some lilies in my hand

In this world is where we need our flowers
And a kind word to help us get along
So if you can't give me flowers when I'm living,
Then please don't throw them when I'm gone

Open Mike:

The song's in the DT here, but without any attribution.

The sheet music I have for Give Me The Roses Now shows R.H. Cornelius and James Rowe as the authors. Is one of them the "Welsh miner" you speak of? I wouldn't swear to it, but I don't think the Carters ever claimed to have written it; they just sang it. I've heard it done by Bryan Bowers, too.

Come, Sing A Song With Me
Carolyn McDade 1976

Come, sing a song with me,
come, sing a song with me,
come, sing a song with me,
that I might know your mind.

And I'll bring you hope
when hope is hard to find,
adn I'll bring a song of love

The same idea occurs in one of the most-sung of all Turkish folksongs:

Zemheri ayında (canım) gül ister benden

"in the month of December (my love) it [fate] wants roses from me"

The song is "Bilmem su felegin", you can find many versions of it on YouTube, done in an amazing variety of different ways.

Ernie Sheldon ne: Ernie Lieberman was a member of the singing group Limelighters and replaced Glenn Yarborough. He is a pro lyricist and has penned for movies such as
Elmer Bernstein (Baby the Rain Must Fall) and others. He wrote for Captain Kangaroo
for a while. I worked with him in the Seventies.

Ernie was an original member of People's Artists in New York, (a spinoff of People's Songs).

Ernie had an earlier recording LP called "Goodbye Mr. War". He also sang Bernie Asbel's song, "Song of My Hands".

BRING ME A ROSE
(Ernie Sheldon)

Bring me a Rose in the Wintertime

Bring me a Rose in the Wintertime
I got roses on my mind.

Well a rose is sweet
Most anytime and yet
Bring me a Rose in the Wintertime

Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
When it's hard to find
Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
I got smilin' on my mind.

Well a smile is sweet

Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
How easy we forgot.

Well a kiss is sweet
Most anytime and yet
Bring me a kiss when my baby's grown

Bring me love in the Autumn years
Love is on my mind

Well love is sweet

Bring me peace when there's talk of war

Bring me peace when there's talk of war
Peace is on my mind

Well peace is sweet most anytime and yet

Here are the chords I use, based on Ernie Sheldon's recording; I have the Limeliters' album More of Everything! and have enjoyed the song for many years.

C                      Am
Bring me a rose in the winter time
C                Am
When it's hard to find
C                      Am
Bring me a rose in the winter time
         Dm          G
I've got roses on my mind
       C       Am          C            Am
Well a rose is sweet, most any time and yet
C          Am          C      Am
Bring me a rose in the winter time
    G       C
How easy we forget

I did notice a slight variation in the lyrics posted by Ann Lieberman regarding one verse compared with what Ernie Sheldon sang on the 1964 album. The recording has:

Bring me a love in the autumn years
When it's hard to find
Bring me a love in the autumn years
Love is on my mind

Well, love is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me a love in the autumn years
How easy we forget

The lyrics above are the ones I've always sung. Of course, it's the songwriter's prerogative to change them if he/she so chooses. (Think "Eric Bogle.")
