The events I mentioned are living history type things The one in Piqua has an arts & craft section as well. Ft. St. Clair (the event in Eaton) Is a time line event with Native American Dancing, Frech & Indian war camp, Mountian men, Rev.War folks & on up through the Gulf war "reenactors" along with all that they have period entertainers (like me & my partner) performing at various stages. Last year they had a Hughy helicopter land , that was cool. Any way we (Tartan played) will be in Scottish dress singing & all I thought it would be cool to maybe see some of you if you are in the area

Irish and Bearheart...

We could probably even meet at my house(apartment). I call it house, my landlord (who lives next door) calls it an apartment. It's huge and not attached to anything but a storeroom. Think it might work pretty well for a gathering, if you don't mind trekking to Meigs County. I love to sing, and I'm about two weeks older than IR, but I'm told I still have a good voice. I can play the guitar, but I'd rather sing along with someone else playing. Keep in touch and we'll get together eventually.

Hi Folks, I'm in Chicago this weekend but want to get together soon.

I'll be emailing my phone # to Shanti, and would be interested in doing phone/email hook ups with you all. (that's almost y'all but not quite). Then we can plan a time to do an initial get-together.

Also I have a friend in the Zanesville area who might let us meet at her house-- it's not her brand of music I think but she's pretty open.

Do we want to be thinking about a list of tunes/songs we like that we are interested in sharing, or am I being too organized? It would be nice if we're actually going to play music together if we could practice some stuff ahead.

Anybody have any current favorites we all might know?

We could also just wing it...

Also: Who plays what instrument and who sings in this crowd?

Sorry, you all posted during the eight days or so I was out of town and I didn't go back far enough to check on the thread. Was actually looking for it to get the Locator thingy kat/katlaughing mentioned.

I am about 20 minutes west of Athens on SR 356 (we live in the country!).

I'm willing to travel to play music with others. Also I have a friend in the Athens area who I've been trying to reconnect with who played in a band with me in the mid 80's. He's somewhat sedentary but usually happy to host jams; don't know if he's willing to travel but that wouldn't stop me.

stats on me: hippie chick who has been singing since I can remember. born 5/30/1954, Gettysburg PA. Raised all over, living in these hills since I was 12, and listening to/playing Applachian music into and through college, along with the Celtic stuff. Also interested in other ethnic music (my dad growing up in a Danish community in NW PA played Danish music on fiddle, my mom's dad played fiddle in a Hungarian gypsy orchestra in Pittsburgh). Also see beginning of this thread...

By the way, do you guys know about FOOTMAD (Friends of Old-time Music and Dance) based in Charleston? Their weekend campout/festival is coming up in late September (23rd?). Bout an hour and a bit south of Athens. The best kept secret in folk music. A really good time, and a real good mix of old-time with some blues and Celtic thrown in. Concerts, workshops and dancing as well as spontaneous jams. And great people!

I look forward to getting a session going...

I've done some wandering myself...from NYC to Denver to DC to Houston to KC to Miami to New Haven to NYC to Miami to KC to NYC again and now to Shade. Got really sick of livin' in cities.

Sandy P told me that Ron Ewing is in the Cols area. Will contact him for one of his instruments when I have some cash. Your server sounds like mine. This one seems to have trouble at the first drop of rain, on moderately windy days and even when there is no weather disturbance to speak of. Too many subscribers and not enought techies, I think. Of course, I can't blame that on SE Ohio phone lines...the ones in NYC were just as bad...particularly in my apartment building.

Hope the person who originated this thread will get in touch...would like to discuss jammin' a little more.

I was born over in east Ohio and grew up in Columbus (Reynoldsburg). Went to college in Kentucky at Berea and the mountain sound and folk hit me hard then. In my 30's I lived in Chattanooga, Somerset, KY., Nashville, Chicago, Charlotte, and Atlanta........then I got married and decided it was time to come home. How we wound up in Bremen is another story.

HI SANDY---Last I knew, Ron Ewing was still in Columbus, but that was a bit back. Met him 6 or 7 years ago (gawd time passes quickly) and he has a wonderful approach to Apps especially. I thought he had a website, but I couldn't locate it.....but then again, we just had some nasty storms and my server is acting funky....or my phone lines here on the "Dixie Cup & Thread Phone Company."

Spaw...you and I are about the same age. That's nice to know. Think I know where Lancaster is, so I guess I could find Breman too. Got lost coming back from the Cols airport in April and ended up taking a lovely tour of most of Southern Ohio. When I saw something that said Morgan County, I knew I'd gone WAY past my place. Beatiful country, but it was a rainy day, and I was tired anyway. Someday, I'll take a leisurely trip around the area, one that I actually plan to take.

I've actually been printing songs from this site for my collection, for about 3 years. But I'd never joined the group until this last week. Why does it keep putting my name as GUEST Shanti?

Have you lived in this area all your life?

Shanti, first, I'm Spaw. And no, its simply the year I was born. I've been around this place for the past two tears and although we're going through one of our "nasty burps" at the moment, its a great place. There's over 8000 lyrics in the DT, the Resources Page has pictures, emails, and such. You can read 4 years worth of old threads by entering keywords in the search box.....lots of neat stuff.

Dennison is in east Ohio about anther 40 minutes from Cambridge, but Cambridge is fine too. And I do know where Shade is....about 8 or 9 miles out of Athens on 33. We live in Bremen, east of Lancaster on 37.

Okay Catspaw49 (does this really mean there are 48 more of you lurking around?) Do you know where Shade, Ohio is? I'm about 5 miles further on...outside Burlingham. Shade is considered the "bigger" town...has about 100 people. I don't live in any town...but Shade is the closest PO. Closest REALLY big town is Athens. Yeah, it's different from NY, but almost anything is. It's a difference for the better, believe me...and thanks for the welcome. Where is Dennison in miles, with relation to Shade? Remember, I'm new here. I'd like to meet some people with trad/Celtic passions too. I like Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and lots of other types of food...but I'm also a Vegetarian. That doesn't make it difficult...just give me some pasta and I'm happy.

So will you guys harbor a thought of meeting me there too. Cambridge has some other decent restaurants if Chinese isn't your thing.

A little farther for Shanti (Bearheart, where are you?) but a bit shorter for 'Fox is a place in tiny little Dennison that would love to have some folks sitting around singing/playing, etc.

You can tell by the typos in my last message that I wasn't quite awake when I wrote it. Cambridge isn't terribly far from where I am. I've got a fairly large collection of songs and I play guitar well enough to accompany myself, though I sing MUCH better than I play. Would love to chat with, exchange songs, and generally get to know some other folks with the same interests. I've only been living in SE Ohio since December, when I transplanted myself from NYC.

You might also try posting your question to the IRTRAD-L mailing list. It's a website e mail list devoted to traditional Irish music. They have members all over, so you might find some like-minded people in your area. They can be reached at [e-mail]

There is also the Highlands of Ohio Celtic and Folk Music Society at HTTP://www.highlandsofohio.com/ I don't think they're active in your part of the state, but they might know of a group in your area.

For starters, though, can't beat Kat's suggestion of contacting Ohio Mudcatters. I think you'll find this community pretty special. Welcome to it!

Hey there, Bearheart, welcome to the Mudcat! I saw your posting on the garden thread. Really enjoyed the bit about the beavers and Congratulations on passing the state boards!

If you haven't already, you might want to read the very top thread, which is teal in colour and called Mudcat FAQS. It will tell you a lot about navigating the 'Cat, although it looks like you've figured it out pretty well already.

If you go the Quick Links which is near the upper right hand side of the main thread page, use the pull down menu and click on Mudcat Resources, you will go to a page which has the Mudcat Locator, click on that you can see a list, by country, state, and county of where Mudcatters live, at least the ones who have sent their info in to be included. Catspaw49, usually refered to as "Spaw" lives in Ohio, don't think it's southeast though, and there are a couple of others, if I remember right. He is a luthier, as well as one of our more illustrious raconteurs!

Anyway, holler if you need any help or have any questions. Mudcatters are very helpful. Glad you have joined us.

I'm very new to Mudcat and liking it very much. I realized that some folks have used the service to find other like minded people. I have been into this music since I was a teenager (over 30 years), have sung and played with family, been in a band for a few years and after pursuing a career/self-employment and most lately finishing another bout with school I find myself starved for musical companionship. Is there anyone in SE Ohio that wants to jam? I especially like to sing (some harmony), am learning the harp and have some familiarity with fretted instruments. I prefer doing traditional songs, especially ballads (the older and more obscure and poetical the better), but also like good quality composed songs with a message. I also used to know a fair number of tunes though I haven't played regularly with a group for about 8 years. I have a LARGE collection of songs.
