Sailor Dan, a lot of the no-name attached GUESTs are compulsively posting, self appointed critics, but it's not worth accidentally flaming a newbie asking a question for lyrics to assume they all are. I don't think it's worth wrongly deciding that someone meant something they didn't simply because there's no name up there. I still think the words should be more important than the name or lack of a name.

I don't have any respect for people who toss their cookies because they know what they're doing is wrong, and do it anyway. A lack of respect for them translates to "who cares" when they type some sort of childish insult. I'm imagining the "Aren't you the clever clogs" as a bit of whiney, snooty commentary by that Angelica brat in "Rugrats." I never figured out why those other kids wanted to play with her at all.

I would not flame a newbie, after all I am quite new to the cat myself. When I first came here I requested a set of Lyrics and Chords to a song that I was trying to learn for the banjo.

My request was promptly answered by 3 people within a 2 hour time frame. I was most appreciative. The "Guest" items I referred to as idiots were the 3 of the four directly above my post. The fourth of course being Bill D whom signs in as himself as I do.

Maybe the use of the word idiot equating to the title Guest is improper and offensive to you or some others. I therefore offer my apologies to those offended by the inappropriate correlation. The apology DOES NOT extend to the &@^#$@#@^@&@*#&#^#&^#& who make smart remarks and only use the title "Guest". Actually I didnt want to use my Navy Language as a description of what I really meant. Again My apologies.

I think the recent pattern of responding to trolls and flamers by turning their comments around on them, and making something positive of it, is a great way to handle such things, but hurling anonymous unfriendly insults at moonchild (as opposed to the friendly slagging between friends that goes on here) and then telling her to lighten up after she responds? I can't fault the straightforward "go to hell" it got back.

Sinsull, I can confirm what Kendall said about his statement: "I dont care what they say about you Sinsull, you're ok in my book!" In Maine it really is a term of affection and approval. I use it all the time.

In general I think we have something we cannot fix because there is no way to get at the problem. I don't know who has hurt Rick but it sounds like it was one of those unkindest cuts, i.e., coming from a "friend". Still, Rick, there are others who have been your friends and who are still sticking up for you. I always enjoyed your sense of humor as I lurked through the threads and would hate to see any of the 'catters change their ways because of a disruptive outside influence.

Also, I came out of lurk mode because I wanted to get to know you all and be accepted as part of this community. I'm going to be royally ticked off if it dissolves or changes radically just as I start to get involved.

I think we need to keep our heads and our sense of humor ready at hand. When someone gets hurt by something like this we need to be ready to rally round the injured party.

And Gervase, I'm with SailorDan. When you step outside I'm there by your side too.

I've noticed that the trolls have so far gotten bored and walked away. Yes, letting the threads die is the ultimate solution, though it's hard to resist doing the "turn it around" thing and have a little fun with them.

The current method of turning a negative to a positive still (and this is my opinion, not gospel) gives the flamer an opportunity to see his "name in lights"; it still gives him credibility and a forum.

Well that seems ot have died down a bit, but NOW, she has started a thread about teh prisoner releases in Ireland! AS IF WE NEED TO STIR THAT POT ,AGAIN!! After all of the recent bullshit of Conrad Blaney #1 Asshole and the contentious threads he had going, we do not need another volatile discussion on this issue, IMO, esp, when the initial post in done in an inflammaroty manner, as are most of that person's postings.

So, while it doesn't attack me, personally, I am asking everyone to please do not respond to the PIRA thread, please let it die.

I'm not responding here to those idiots with the single purpose names disappearing after one or a few posts and never contributing in a serious discussion but to those that help them unwillingly and have names well know also from serious discussions. The first kind of posters are beyond argumentation but you mudcatters perhaps aren't.
You are helping them to ruin Mudcat by acknowledging their posts. You swallow their baits hook and sinker. Completely pointless threads get dozens of pointless responses. Personal attacks get more responses than questions for the background of a song and you call that mudcatting. It seems to me that some of you in these cases just get verbal diarrhoea both in amount ant content, or, to put it slightly nicer, are unable to hold back the ink. And sometimes you even manage to sink nearly as low as the person that got you mad in the first place.
Don't you see that a further increase of pointless posts will ruin this place? I don't think it is good for Mudcat that, for instance, someone posting as 'Lyndon Larouche' gets more rections in a week than, e.g., Malcolm Douglas.
To end my rant a bit more constructive:
Never ever add pointless posts to a pointless thread.
If there's a personal attack (by a person with an unknown name), just leave it completely to the one attacked to respond or not. Share your sympathy or outrage in personal mails to the one attacked, but do not post here.
The person attacked may ignore the flamer (as Shambles did with 'Barfy'), may tell them to get lost (as Moonchild did with those ever changing names) or may mockingly pretend to take them serious (as Catspaw did with Catspaw48). (Boy, (s)he was really lacking phantasy, '48 I mean, in the choice of that name. A name with much more parodying phantasy would have been 'catspam49', but I digress.)
My personal preference is the first method, but I have a deep sympathy for the other two as well. However, I think the best policy is to leave it completely to the one attacked to respond or not.
