Richard,

Sounds like your version is the same as the Mopps version on the "Brewers Dray" tape I have!

Did you ever frequent Becky's Dive Bar in the 70's? Then you would have them singing your lines.

Hmm! Loads of similar versions above, but none of them with one of the verses that I'm familiar with:
Charlie found some malt one day, reclining in a tub.
He poured in hops and water, murmuring "Loverly grub!"
He stirred it with a garden spade and said "What have we here?"
He took a swig, danced a jig, and said "I'll call it beer".

Following on from above - the other traditional (unless mentioned) "Drinking Songs" on the cassette are:

The Flowing Bowl
Bring us a barrel
Pick & the Malt Shovel
Jones's Ale
New York Girls
Jug of Punch
Drop of Good Beer
Old Dun Cow
Plastic Pub (John Short Original)
All for me grog
Wild Rover

Post 9 years ago, I have just caught up with this blog. He mentions "The set he quotes is transcribed from a recording by 'Brewers Dray' (Mopps Music cassette MM0112); no further details are given. It differs in many respects from the examples quoted earlier.

I have a copy of this very cassette, given to me by John Short of Mopps. It is a classic from a very talented band from the 1970's who performed in Becky's Dive bar, the Globe Pub (Both in Southwark, London) and even made an appearance in the "New Faces" TV talent show and gained the distinction of getting 0 points from one judge!.

If anyone is interested in more details give us a shout!

the Australian version Bob Bolton mentioned earlier collected 1953, enhanced version published 1958 A song with a world-wide reputation and many local versions and verses, here is a version collected in Australia & first published by the Bush Music Club in Singabout The Journal of Australian Folksong, Vol 3, no.3, 1958.

It was collected by Redd Sullivan from the Chief Refrigeration Engineer on the SS Tekoa in 1953. The second verse was written by BMC member Peter Francis, and the last verse sent by an English contributor Tam Murrell from Twickenham. BMC members localised the pub names and it became almost the theme song of the club and is still wildly popular 60 years later.

some people have cofused this song with one from a computer game the bards tale but there is also a genuine celtic song its based on (or vice versa) which is similar.
the games version is:

A long time ago, way back in history,
when all there was to drink was nothin but cups of tea.
Along came a man by the name of Charlie Mops,
and he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops.

He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer.

The Curtis bar, the James' Pub, the Hole in the Wall as well
one thing you can be sure of, its Charlie's beer they sell
so all ye lads a lasses at eleven O'clock ye stop
for five short seconds, remember Charlie Mops 1 2 3 4 5

He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer.

A barrel of malt, a bushel of hops, you stir it around with a stick,
the kind of lubrication to make your engine tick.
40 pints of wallop a day will keep away the quacks.
Its only eight pence hapenny and one and six in tax, 1 2 3 4 5

He must have been an admiral a sultan or a king,
and to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer!
Lord bless Charlie Mops, the man who invented beer beer beer
tiddly beer beer beer.

The Lord bless Charlie Mops!

My great great great great great great great grandfather knew a bloke who knew a bloke who said that Charles Edward Mopps was his uncle. He did invent beer and made a fortune. He died penniless. They reckon that he converted all his assetts to diamonds & gold and then buried this treasure somewhere in kent, the county where he had planted the first hop. Nostradamus quatrains predict that that it will be dug up by a folksinger sometime in 2008.

Tom Stanyard: I posted the lyrics to THE BLOKE WHO INVENTED BEER in a new thread: Lyr Add: The Bloke Who Invented Beer (Rolf Harris).

Since it's a different song from BEER, BEER, BEER / CHARLIE MOPPS, I figure it deserves its own thread.

Guest Truth Syrum, you may be a wee bit humor-impaired if you interpret this as "absurdly egocentric European history." Next you'll be telling us that the darby ram was just average-sized after all.

Its so funny how absurdly egocentric European history is seeing as they've been making homemade beer for centuries in Africa long before there ever was a Charlie Mopp legend.

So after reading all of this I'm still going to have to tell folks,"I just don't know who is responsible for this song or when it was written." Possibly as early as the mid 19th century, but probably not. Ya know that sounds like a folk song. It's just there. It has several different sets of lyrics, and people like to hear and sing it. Thanks for the entertaining read and info.

Hello,

I have to say that in South London we sing "Charlie Motts". I have nothing against the Mopps family, but Charlie was a South London guy evidenced by his stamping ground of Mottingham! (Village and holding of Mott!)

My version of the verse dealing with the price of beer has it that...

"...a couple of pints of wallop a day will keep away the quacks...(i.e. doctors)
It's only 20p a pint and £3 10 in tax!"

Best wishes,

Pete

Utter b*ll&cks - beer is made from malted barley (or other source of fermentable material), not hops - the latter are simply used for their preservative powers, and for flavour.

:-D

Here is the version made famous by Bill Gardner an 80 year old bloke who sings at the folkmob club. More or less the same as the other versions but shorter and easy to remember.

Now many years ago
There was nowt but misery
All that people had to drink
Was ginger beer and tea
Until there came upon this earth
A man named Charlie Mopps
And he discovered this wonderful stuff
He gave it the name of "hops"

Now when he first learnt to brew the stuff
He called it "bungaloo"
And if you had the dibs*
On the tiddly* you would go
Now all you tiddly people
That are sitting here
Go down upon your knees and bless
The man who invented beer

Oh he ought t'been an emporor

Sorry to be late on this thread, only just seen it.

The song was recorded by the Fureys as "The Man Who Invented Beer" and from memory the lyrics were similar to those above (Charlie Mopps etc.). There was a different song recorded by Rolf Harris (don't know who wrote it or whether it was an Aussie song?) called "The Bloke Who Invented Beer". Anyone know anything about the latter song?

Have two threads been combined here? It's difficult to see why anyone would think it necessary to quote lyrics from a Pogues record three times in the same discussion, and from a Playstation game twice.

Roy Palmer, incidentally (A Taste of Ale, Kencot (Gloucestershire):Green Branch Press, 2000, 277) notes that the song "was once widespread in oral tradition: for example, British soldiers in India sang it in the 1930s and '40s." The book is a light anthology rather than one of his scholarly works, and he gives no source for this assertion; nor does he seem to have known, at the time, of the earlier publications mentioned above. The set he quotes is transcribed from a recording by 'Brewers Dray' (Mopps Music cassette MM0112); no further details are given. It differs in many respects from the examples quoted earlier.

The Clancy Brothers almost certainly got the song from an English or Australian source, and its recent popularity in Ireland likely derives from their recording of it. I should forget any Shakespearian connection if I were you. Palmer suggests possibly mid 19th century; his instincts are generally good, so it's very unlikely to be older than that; and, as has been suggested earlier here (the best history of the song you are liable to get, I suspect), likely enough to be rather more recent.

the song is also featured in the game "a bard's tale" for pc and playstation 2....the lyrics are as follows (in the game at least)

beer beer beer tiddily beer beer beer tiddilly
beer beer beer tiddily beer beer beer

a long time ago way back in history
when all there was to drink was nothin but cups of tea
along came a man by the name of charlie mopps
and he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops

HEY!

he must have been an admiral a sultan or a king!
and to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer
Lord bless charlie mopps
the man who invented beer

beer beer tiddily beer beer beer

The drunken rat the aiken drum the trowles pub as well
one thing you can be sure of
it's charlie's beer they sell
so all ye lads and lasses
at 11 o'clock ye stop
for 5 short seconds remember charlie mops
1....2....3....4....5!

HEY

he must have been an admiral a sultan or a king
and to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer
lord bless charlie mops the man who invented

beer beer beer tiddilly beer beer beer

a barrel of malt
a bushel of hops
ya stir it around with a stick
the type of lubrication to make your engines tick
40 pints of wallop a day will keep away the quacks
it's only 8 pence hapenny and one and six in tax

he must have been an admiral a sultan or a king
and to his praises we shall always sing
look what he has done for us he's filled us up with cheer
lord bless charlie mopps the man who invented

beer beer beer tiddily beer beer beer tiddily
beer beer beer tiddily beer beer beer tiddilly
beer beer beer...

the lord bless charlie mopps!

i just want to know who ORIGINALLY wrote the song...i heard something about shakespeare??? It seems quite a popular song among the irish and i've heard quite a few different versions. If anyone can give me a link to a possible history of the song that would be great.

I don't know who sang it, but here's how I heard it:

One! Two! Three!
Beer, beer, beer, diddley, beer, beer, beer!

A long time ago, way back in history,
When all they had to drink was nothing but cups of tea,
Along came a lad by the name of Charlie Mopps,
And he invented a wonderful drink and he made it out of hops.

CHORUS: He must have been an admiral, a sultan or a king,
And to his praises we shall always sing.
Look what he has done for us: he's filled us all with cheer.
God bless Charlie Mopps, the man who invented beer.
(Beer, beer, beer, diddley, beer, beer, beer.)

The (your location), (another location), the Hole in the Wall as well;
One thing you can be sure of, it's Charlie's beer they sell.
So come along, my lively lads, at eleven o'clock they stop:
For five short seconds, remember Charlie Mopps.
(One... Two... Three, four, five) CHORUS

A bushel of malt, a barrel of hops, you stir it around with a stick:
The sort of lubrication to make your engine tick.
40 pints of wallop a day will keep away the quacks.
It's only 8 and 1/8 a pint, and one-and-6 in tax.
(One... Two... Three, four, five) (chorus)

Diddley, beer, beer, beer
And long live Charlie Mopps!

Sam, Frank Winter is more likely to have learned it from Frank Fyfe, not the other way around.
I think Frank Fyfe had mags or song books from the Bush Music Club and I'm pretty sure that's where he found it, and lots of others too.
