Subject: Another cd/tape search From: sledge Date: 19 Jul 00 - 07:01 AM After the success of my last request for help I thought why not push my luck, do it again. Most of the net searched so far has been of no use. I am looking to replace a recording given to me by a Ukrainien friend of a female singer who I only remember as Maria (last name defeats me). The songs are Ukrainien folk songs largely suppressed in the Soviet eara. The tape I had was printed in Canada about 92/93 I think. My girlfriend did not like it so when we moved house.... Anyway, grateful for any help offered. Cheers Sledge |

Subject: RE: Another cd/tape search From: Jacob B Date: 19 Jul 00 - 11:01 AM Hi Sledge, If this thread doesn't succeed in finding an answer for you, try one named "Help: Ukranian Songs". That's more likely to attract the attention of people who know about things that have been recorded in Ukranian. Best of luck. |

Subject: RE: Another cd/tape search From: Lepus Rex Date: 20 Jul 00 - 02:33 AM Sledge, there's a Ukrainian singer named Maria Burmaka, who released an album (in Canada!)called 'Maria.' Does that ring a bell? Here's what else I found... Here's the address for her Canadian record label... Yevshan Corporation Box 325 Beaconsfield, Quebec Canada H9W5T8 Here's her 'unofficial homepage,' which is full of info, pictures (kinda cute...) and a discography of all her tapes...but the text is in friggin' Cyrillic, so good luck. Here's a site with what's supposed to be a sound clip of her's, but I couldn't get it to work...What in Hell is an mp2? And it's got a big clickable picture of her. Ah, well... Hope that helps (if it's even the same Ukrainian Maria, hehe) :) ---Lepus Rex |

Subject: RE: Another cd/tape search From: Lepus Rex Date: 20 Jul 00 - 02:40 AM Me again, hehe... Here's some info one Maria from that Yevshan site, where you can buy her stuff on cd: "Maria Burmaka presents a more pop-oriented set of songs and ballads. Her delicate vocals are accompanied by guitar, percussion and violin. Arrangements are very interesting, somewhat reminiscent of the "Enya" style and provide fine easy-listening material. Contains: Rozliuby, De ty teper, Tykha voda, Povernutys' nazad, and more... A new sound for this young artist!" OK, I'm done now;) And it'll turn out to be the WRONG one, I bet. ---Lepus Rex |

Subject: RE: Another cd/tape search From: sledge Date: 20 Jul 00 - 03:10 AM HI Lepus, That the girly indeed. Take ten brownie points, go to the top of the class. Soon My girlfriend can "enjoy" it all over again. Maria's material deffinatley has a pop aspect to it, but it stays clear of being standard Ukrainien/Russian pop which has to be seen to be believed, it is very very bad. Her voice has a gravely texture which suits the material well, not sure about it being Enya-ish. Whatever, I enjoy even if I can only pick out every tenth word. Again many thanks. Cheers, Sledge |
