My completely German father sang Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra to me at night, and when my German, English and French mother had a chance to go somewhere overseas...she picked the Green Isles. I finally got to see part of Ireland myself (thought not enough of it) in '96, but I haven't been to Scotland, yet. That's my next trip, when I have some money. I'm glad that Scotland and Ireland are there for me to fantacize about, and personally, I LOVE the accents of both places. Could sit and listen to you guys talk for the rest of my life.

I don't remember the details to the story, but it appears from these notes that Archie Beaton is the father of Harry Beaton who was killed. Rock and roll was blasting from a juke box at literally a deafening pitch and the place was as thick as a sauna with cigarette smoke. It was full of drunken teenagers, but oddly. it also featured numerous tables of adults and elderly who patiently endured the noxious ambiance of the place, pints in hand, blankly staring into space. God knows how they did it,because we couldn't last 2 minutes in the place. Sorry, Kat. Just wanted you to know that at least some places in Scotland make a neighborhood bar in Casper Wyoming look like Paradise. |

Brought her to this country, but, she didnt last (his fault) she could not get into Bluegrass music, but she liked my folk music. In time they parted, and she went back to Scotland. One day I got a picture post card from her, and it was a shot of the highlands with one lone piper. Well! the shock is still a mystery to me. The damndest feeling of homesickness came over me. I had never been there..not in this life. Since then, I've been back twice. In Fort William I met a piper and asked him to play the Dark Island on his highland pipes..Hog heaven..very moving. So, I think there is something to this past life stuff. |

It seems to me that a group of men marching into battle could easily be influenced to lay down their lives, with the bagpipes calling up what is best and most heroic in their nature. Maybe that is the secret of the tragic aura surrounding the lone piper. Without the stir of drums and battle, the sound of the single bagpipes player seems to mourn what was lost. |

I was born that way, by blood and otherwise: Crawfords, Ralstons, Sutherlands, Ewings, etc. My family teased me about dressing up and going out on the hills behind our house, esp. when it rained (not very often in western Colorado!) and pretending I was tramping around the highlands. I also spoke with the nearest approximation as I could of a highland accent and was asked once by a fourth grade new friend if I was from Scotland. Until the past 3 years I couldn't listen to the music, esp. the pipes, nor watch footage on tv, without sobbing with a terrible homesickness. There are, in my belief system, past lives which were lived there and which ended sadly and have left their residual melancholy in my heart. As for us knowing more than you? It seems a common thing sometimes. When we lived in New England for ten years I often had natives tell me we knew more about their region than they dd growing up there. I think it was because we had such a keen interest and were out every weekend, almost, exploring and learning. We used to kid my mom about it, as she always was wanting to "go round the next bend" or "over the next hill." It was all so interesting and new to us, something we'd read about. They were quite used to it. I suppose the same might be said of any of us out here in the wild West...drive by the Oregon Trail or Independence Rock and most days don't give it a second's thought. Since I was a child, I always dog-eared all my music books to the pages with those tunes. I read somewhere that it is the modal sound in those old tunes. Whatever it is, I could recognize it before I had a name for it. Now I'm listening to dulcimer music, much of it from Appalachia, and I hear that same bagpipe drone that I love. I also love any tune that Ralph Vaughan Williams had anything to do with. Maybe somebody else can better articulate what these tunes all have in common. As far as ancestry, I was always told that my father's family was Scotch-Irish. Then I moved to england and we didn't learn anything traditionally english. Appreciating the music of Scotland and Ireland is key to understanding much of traditional music, especially for those of "Scotch Irish" ancestry, like yours truly. |

Like most nations with a lot of emigration, they carried a strong sense of where they were coming from as who they were. I've never been there (yet), but grew up with this knowledge--and gradually realized how Scottish I am in character, musical preferences, politics and so on.
