Thanks kat...I'll check it out. Sounds like HearMe is a good place to explore.

No, doubt you'd sound like me da, and you wouldn't want to. He could carry a tune, but that's about it. Did put a lot of heart into it though. He was born in SE MO, of completely German stock. He just loved that lullaby.

Shanti, come into HearMe on Sunday night and you will hear some who have the accents live and in person, plus, if you have a microphone and would like to, we could HearYou!

And, I probably couldn't come close to sounding like your da, well...I am female to start with *grin*, but I often sing Too-a-Loo-ra in there as my mom and dad both used to sing me to sleep with it, as well as the Prairie Lullaby.

If you want to know more about HearMe, look for it in the Permathread at the top, MUDCAT FAQS, or go into any HearMe thread and click on the link.If you have any trouble or quesstions, just holler and one of us will try to help.

All the best,

kat

I have no ancestral claim to anything Scottish or Irish, but everything to do with either has drawn me like a magnet for as long as I can remember. My completely German father sang Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra to me at night, and when my German, English and French mother had a chance to go somewhere overseas...she picked the Green Isles. I finally got to see part of Ireland myself (thought not enough of it) in '96, but I haven't been to Scotland, yet. That's my next trip, when I have some money. I'm glad that Scotland and Ireland are there for me to fantacize about, and personally, I LOVE the accents of both places. Could sit and listen to you guys talk for the rest of my life.

So if the wind blew the bonnie lassie's plaidie awa, was she running around nekkid (as we say in Tennessee)? And was it really the wind, or something more exotic, that caused said plaidie to be misplaced?????

Mr. Cameron, I went to read your story and found it most entertaining. Thanks! I have now bookmarked the page. :)

What isit about Scotland? I've got it, too! were we all there in a past life? Or is it the rootless American again longing for a place whose bones go deep, deep down into the earth. For me it's all of the above, plus my Granny was a Stewart. The pipes stir my blood, the dancing gets me moving, and a laddie in a plaidie is the best sight I can think of!
Ickle Dorrit, I'm glad you liked Loch Lomond, too- 22 years ago when I was last in the UK it was one of the loveliest stops on my rambles.

Hi Ebbie,

Maybe it's some kind of coincidence, but in my Brigadoon music the notes to, Lord Lovat's Lament, say:

Everyone starts back in horror. Bagpipers appear, followed by Archie Beaton, who is carrying Harry's body.

I don't remember the details to the story, but it appears from these notes that Archie Beaton is the father of Harry Beaton who was killed. I looked at kat's and ljc's links, and it doesn't appear to be the same song.

Mbo... just imagine it done real slowly as a funeral tune. It really is haunting. Course I once heard Ode to Joy played slowly for a funeral, and it was gorgeous.

I'm an american, but my parents never let me forget that my temper and stubborness stem from my Irish and Scottish roots. ha-ha. I am always doing research, and am fascinated by the history of my family accross the pond. There is a singer by the name of Mae McKenna. Do you know of her? She is from Scotland, and i love the music, but i can't get it in the States, or order it online right now. To me, it is very relaxing. I am leaning toward the music in Ireland and Scotland. The rhythm is in my Irish Scottish soul, i suppose. -hope that answers it for you. Morgan

The pibroch in Brigadoon is Lord Lovat's Lament and then they may go into a dance piece. Lord Lovat's Lament has also been adjusted into a 4/4 tune for marching.

I assume from the above discussion that there are numerous ones for various families. Does anyone know anything about this one from Brigadoon?

My wife and I walked into a pub in Ayreshire, the first pub we had gone to on a trip to Scotland, and it promptly blew all of our Brigadoon fantasies out of the water. Rock and roll was blasting from a juke box at literally a deafening pitch and the place was as thick as a sauna with cigarette smoke. It was full of drunken teenagers, but oddly. it also featured numerous tables of adults and elderly who patiently endured the noxious ambiance of the place, pints in hand, blankly staring into space. God knows how they did it,because we couldn't last 2 minutes in the place.

Sorry, Kat. Just wanted you to know that at least some places in Scotland make a neighborhood bar in Casper Wyoming look like Paradise.

Most Summer Sunday's, a pipe band would play on the village green. I loved it, visitors loved it, the EX wife hated it.

Mbo....if you can, find a recording of "The Lament for the Children"....not exactly a battle tune

I am Scots-Irish, but the Scots side easily 'feels' like where my soul resides...I have Scotts, Murrays, Armstrongs, Bogles....and when I found single malt Scoth, I KNEW!....

even my wife, who is 2nd generation Italian, says that when she visited Scotland in the late 70s she had this feeling that "I'm home"....(the Scots and Italians seem to have some amazing synergy in a lot of ways)

Pibroch, or it's proper spelling piobaireachd, is a long technically challenging piece for solo piper. Each is usually associated with a certain family, kinda like a family theme song. There were played to pump up soldiers before battle...

The sad stuff is when ye listen tae a solitary piper up in the hills,wi' no' anither sound aboot except the burds,an' he's playin' a pibroch. The sound o' this mournfu' sound echoin' in the hills wid gie anyane the willies.

Now my question...What is a pibroch?...and help me here kat, what was that funeral tune in the musical Brigadoon? Seems like it had a name like pibroch or something.

Weel noo lassie.. many years ago a friend of mine met and married a Scottish woman. Brought her to this country, but, she didnt last (his fault) she could not get into Bluegrass music, but she liked my folk music. In time they parted, and she went back to Scotland. One day I got a picture post card from her, and it was a shot of the highlands with one lone piper. Well! the shock is still a mystery to me. The damndest feeling of homesickness came over me. I had never been there..not in this life. Since then, I've been back twice. In Fort William I met a piper and asked him to play the Dark Island on his highland pipes..Hog heaven..very moving. So, I think there is something to this past life stuff.

1) Aye, Gaberlunzie are still oot and aboot on the Scottish Folk scene: we had them in Balerno a few months ago, and they're on at Stirling F.C. on 28th August. 2) I was born in Glasgow, but lived in East Anglia from an early age, lived in Scotland for the last 14 years. Everyone assumes I'm English from the accent, but I don't feel it! 3) Mbo must definately be Scottish if he says definately as only the Scots say definately: the word is definately definitely!!!!

For me, the pipes summon up a call to arms. It seems to me that a group of men marching into battle could easily be influenced to lay down their lives, with the bagpipes calling up what is best and most heroic in their nature. Maybe that is the secret of the tragic aura surrounding the lone piper. Without the stir of drums and battle, the sound of the single bagpipes player seems to mourn what was lost.

I don't know...maybe I'm just not that kind of person. When I hear the lone piper, it gives me a haunting feeling of past defiance, definately NOT tragedy. But then again I'm Italian & German so what do I know after all?

Duncan, lad, blaw the cummers
Play me round the Atholl cummers
A' the din o' a' the drummers
Canna rouse like Atholl cummers
When I'm dowie, wet or weary
Soon my heart grows light and cheery
When I hear the sprightly nummers
O' my dear, my Atholl cummers!

When the fickle lasses vex me
When the cares o' life perplex me
When I'm fley'd wi' frightfu' rumours
Then I lilt o' Atholl cummers
'Tis my cure for a' disasters
Kebbit ewes an' crabbit masters
Drifty nights an' dripping summers
A' my joy is Atholl cummers

Ettrick banks an' braes are bonnie
Yarrow hills as green as onie
But in my heart nae beauty nummers
Wi' my dear, my Atholl cummers
Lomond's beauty nought surpasses
Save Breadalbane's bonnie lasses
But deep within my spirit slummers
Something sweet of Atholl cummers

Mathew, if you'd ever heard one lone piper on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle on a still summer night, bet you'd well up too. The west coast of Scotland, Arisaig and the Isle of Skye have to be seen to be believed, not too touristy and still retaining some credibility, just lovely.Get there if you can. Kat, come over, I'll drive you up there.

at this moment in time I have a fair amount of scotch in me, but not so much Scots. I am however partial to touring the borders and am especially fond of Moffat. I also like Loch Lomond. Gretna Green is however an awful place second only in naffness to Stonehenge.

Saw Gaberlunzie last month. They played Saturday night at the Keith Festival. And they were just as good as they were when I saw them 20 years ago!

All the best

I just don't get it...I always feel pumped up when I hear the pipes. I pretty sure there's nothing that could be played on the pipes that would make me cry. I must be as dull as a rock.

Hey ljc,

Sorry I have come back so late to this thread. All of the above and then some for me. I was born that way, by blood and otherwise: Crawfords, Ralstons, Sutherlands, Ewings, etc. My family teased me about dressing up and going out on the hills behind our house, esp. when it rained (not very often in western Colorado!) and pretending I was tramping around the highlands. I also spoke with the nearest approximation as I could of a highland accent and was asked once by a fourth grade new friend if I was from Scotland.

Until the past 3 years I couldn't listen to the music, esp. the pipes, nor watch footage on tv, without sobbing with a terrible homesickness. There are, in my belief system, past lives which were lived there and which ended sadly and have left their residual melancholy in my heart.

As for us knowing more than you? It seems a common thing sometimes. When we lived in New England for ten years I often had natives tell me we knew more about their region than they dd growing up there. I think it was because we had such a keen interest and were out every weekend, almost, exploring and learning. We used to kid my mom about it, as she always was wanting to "go round the next bend" or "over the next hill." It was all so interesting and new to us, something we'd read about. They were quite used to it. I suppose the same might be said of any of us out here in the wild West...drive by the Oregon Trail or Independence Rock and most days don't give it a second's thought.

Thanks, again, John,

kat

Hi Mac, I'm from Dumfries a little further south. Cumnock was a mining town, not much of that around now. High un-employment etc. There is a lot of pretty scenery pretty close by and you will be fairly handy for Glasgow and Edinburgh. What else do you want to know ???

Some of the tunes are familiar from what my parent sang, (but then again I don't go to church and they sang hymms a lot too). A lot of it is in a language, English, that I know. I sing translations of gaelic if I can as I like to know what I'm singing. LEJ said it well when he mentions the headwaters.

For me it's the Scottish, Irish and English traditional music. Since I was a child, I always dog-eared all my music books to the pages with those tunes. I read somewhere that it is the modal sound in those old tunes. Whatever it is, I could recognize it before I had a name for it. Now I'm listening to dulcimer music, much of it from Appalachia, and I hear that same bagpipe drone that I love. I also love any tune that Ralph Vaughan Williams had anything to do with. Maybe somebody else can better articulate what these tunes all have in common.

As far as ancestry, I was always told that my father's family was Scotch-Irish.

PS LEJ, You said one time that you were kin to everybody in Rockcastle County...well, you may be kin to my husband by marriage!

Don't know why I love Scotland but I'm glad it's there for me to love. I hope to get there one day!

Both parents are scottish and I lived there for 7 years. The first song I learnt in school was
Katie Bardie had a coo
It was black aboot the moo
But she hasney got it noo
Dance Katie Bardie
We used to learn scottish dancing, I can remember practising pa de bas. Then I moved to england and we didn't learn anything traditionally english. Perhaps the reason people are enamoured with the Scots and Irish is because they have a great tradition that is still taught in schools

John, Scotland and Ireland are the headwaters of the stream of Celtic people and music that flowed into places like New England and Apalachia in the 1700's, and Canada and Australia in the 18 and 1900s. Appreciating the music of Scotland and Ireland is key to understanding much of traditional music, especially for those of "Scotch Irish" ancestry, like yours truly.

Well, my dad came from Glasgow...in 1919 at age five. Like most nations with a lot of emigration, they carried a strong sense of where they were coming from as who they were. I've never been there (yet), but grew up with this knowledge--and gradually realized how Scottish I am in character, musical preferences, politics and so on. Never could resist a good bargain, or a good intellectual argument.

I noticed on the "Where are you" thread, that very few of you are from Scotland or Ireland yet there seems to be a great interest, not only here but on the net in general,in all things pertaining to both countries.Maybe you could tell me why this should be so.Is it the music, the history or the funny way we speak.Maybe,as katlaughing said to me,that you were Scots or Irish in a past life.

Try to enlighten me on the subject please. LJC.
