Here in Joyland Beach we get a free journal with the masthead:

The Local Web
presents
OUR TOWNSHIP AT WORK & PLAY
YOUR NEWSPAPER IN A Magazine Format FOR EASIER READING AND LONGER COFFEE TABLE LIFE

(Yes. That is the way they capitalized the last line.)

I like to look through the newspaper to see all the pictures of the mayor. Our mayor of Ramara township is Dr. Tom Garry, a good man who I knew before I moved out this way. The latest 20 page issue has only 6 pictures of the mayor.

While flipping through I spotted a picture of a familiar face on page four. The paragraph below the picture starts out, 'Above, Rick Fielding played on a resophonic guitar which he managed to purchase for $200. There is more to the story, but the music was absolutely great...'

Warms the heart to see Rick in Ramara's The Local Web. And the picture is bigger than some of the mayor's pictures. Mark one up for folk music.

Lucky YOU. There are 6 pictures of our Mayor (who I directed in a musical at University - but I don't think he'd like to be reminded!) in MY local paper (I just checked!) and NO picture of Rick Fielding (I just checked!).

Our mayor should be proud of his past, Callie. He was a cancer doctor and he played a major role in helping us fight a plan to bring 3500-4000 tons a day of Toronto's garbage into this tourist region and redistributing it through an incinerator as poisonous gases and toxic ash. All the Orillia doctors except three worked to stop the incinerator. Dr. Garry and other doctors who knew first hand the ravages of cancer lead the way in the medical community. I think he is a great man.

No, So. Rick not a centerfold. Dr. Garry might get a little jealous if Rick upstages him too much. Rick is folded into a corner between a write up on Mariposa and three ads for (Perfect timing Watch and Clock Repair,) (Silkens one-stop protection for shakes, roofs and decks,) and (Richard's Goldsmithing custom designed jewellery.)

Flattop, give your mayor regards from me. I'm a pediatrician and worked to stop the construction of a food irradiation facility (using radioactive cobalt-60) here on the Big Island of Hawaii. We lost the election but won the battle--the company canceled their plans. Actually, most of the credit goes to my soon-to-be-ex-wife, who worked tirelessly to pull off what nobody thought we'd be able to accomplish.

Aloha,
Mark

Mark, it good to hear of other doctors acting on their health concerns for their community. Send my appreciation to your wife for her efforts. I will give Dr. Garry your regards the next time I see him.

Wow, that is really neat. But, tell me, is it common to have a lot of pictures of your mayors in these weekly papers? I cannot think of a recent time when our mayor's picture was in the paper, although our mayor is a joke compared to what you've told us about yours. The Physicians for Social Responsibility is a great worldwide org. which works on such issues, too, from what I ahve read.

Congratulations, Rick, and thanks for posting it, flattop.

I think, but I'm not sure, that we have a mayor in Smelterville. However, the mayor of Kellogg,Idaho(2 miles to the East), got national exposure in Ski Area magazine when he said "Kellogg's a good town to get drunk in". Made all the local papers after that.

I didn't say it before, congratulations on the exposure,Rick.

Kat, perhaps you have a bigger population in your area than we have in our township or perhaps you have real news other than stories like than Dr. Garry cuts the cake at Ramara's Canada Day Millennium Celebrations. It's a strange little paper.

Geez, a centerfold? Did they mention that I got it away from a KISS band member?

Hey Flattop, any chance I might be able to get a copy of that?

Rick

No centerfold Rick but I will send it to you. Did you fall for that old photographers' line and drop your drawers at Mariposa?
